[Differential diagnosis of unilateral necrotic tonsillitis].

BACKGROUND: The best known clinical picture of a one-sided necrotisising, infectious tonsillitis is the by Plaut and Vincent (1894) described angina Plaut-Vincent. In addition to this fusospirochetosis it is in case of necrotisising inflammations in the oropharynx differential-diagnostically important to consider also the anaerobic type Prevotella, especially Prevotella disiens as a potential trigger . MATERIAL AND METHODS: Because the clinical course forms of a necrotisising oropharyngeal inflammations can be very different and complicate so a suitable diagnosis, it is very important to get

Invasive oral aspergillosis in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Aspergillosis (a fungal infection by an organism of the Aspergillus species) of the oral cavity is an uncommon condition which most frequently occurs in immunocompromised patients, such as those with haematological malignancies. In such patients, prolonged neutropenia secondary to chemotherapeutic agents enables the spread of invasive aspergillosis, which is unaffected by anatomical barriers. Early detection and treatment of the condition is essential to avoid more serious complications, such as disseminated infection, which results in increased morbidity and mortality. This case report descri

Post-chemotherapeutic resolution of acute myeloid leukaemia-induced gingival enlargement: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Leukaemia is a neoplastic dsorder characterized by an excessive proliferation of immature white blood cells and their precursors. Patients with this potentially fatal condition may often first present with gingival enlargement. Early diagnosis of the underlying condition and prompt referral for appropriate therapy, may be life-saving. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old female was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology complaining of a generalised gingival enlargement that was aesthetically displeasing to her. She insisted on immediate surgical removal of the enla

Estimated incidence and clinical presentation of Noma in Northern Nigeria (1999-2024).

Noma (Cancrum Oris), a recent addition to the WHO list of neglected tropical diseases, is a severe, rapidly progressing necrotizing disease of the oral cavity and facial complex with a case fatality rate of 90% if untreated. Active disease is common among children between two and six years in Sub-Saharan Africa while noma sequelae may be seen in individuals at any age. Though most cases have been reported in northern Nigeria, little research is available on the incidence of noma and its clinical presentation in this region using comprehensive data. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the in

Ulcerative uremic stomatitis associated with untreated chronic renal failure: report of a case and review of the literature.

Uremic stomatitis represents a relatively uncommon intraoral complication seen, mostly, in cases of end-stage renal disease or undiagnosed/untreated chronic renal failure. Its incidence has decreased due to the advent of renal dialysis. Clinically uremic stomatitis is characterized by the presence of painful plaques and crusts that are usually distributed on the buccal mucosa, dorsal or ventral surface of the tongue, gingiva, lips, and floor of the mouth. Treatment consists of improvement of urea blood concentration and the underlying renal failure, supported by increased oral hygiene with ant

Noma (cancrum oris): questions and answers.

Noma (cancrum oris) is an infectious disease which destroys the oro-facial tissues and other neighboring structures in its fulminating course. It affects predominantly children aged 2-16 years in sub-Saharan Africa where the estimated frequency in some communities may vary from one to seven cases per 1000 children. The key risk factors are poverty, malnutrition, poor oral hygiene, deplorable environmental sanitation, close residential proximity to livestock, and infectious diseases, particularly measles. Malnutrition acts synergistically with endemic infections in promoting an immunodeficient

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis associated with stratified epithelial specific antinuclear antibodies. A case report of a newly described disease entity.

A case of erosive oral lesions associated with an unusual direct and indirect immunofluorescent pattern is presented. Rather than a submucosal band or intramucosal intercellular deposition, the pattern is that of an antinuclear antibody that reacts only with stratified epithelium. The clinical similarity of this case to erosive lichen planus is discussed. The usefulness of direct and indirect immunofluorescence techniques in the diagnosis of erosive oral lesions is stressed.

The Relationship Between Mental Health and Periodontal Disease: Insights from NHANES Data.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Periodontal disease, initiated by dental biofilm and influenced by various local and systemic factors, includes stress as a potential contributor to its progression. Despite associations with severe forms like acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, a comprehensive large-sample study linking stress to periodontal disease is lacking. This study aims to investigate the relationship between mental health and periodontal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Leveraging data (secondary dataset) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011-2012 and N

Oral manifestations of HIV/AIDS in China: a review.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to review the Chinese-language medical and dental literature from 1982 to 2008 on oral manifestations (OMs) of patients with HIV/AIDS for introducing the spectrum of OMs of the patients in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All data were extracted from 18 references which had used diagnostic criteria for HIV/AIDS. Four of the references had used the EC-Clearinghouse classification for oral lesions in HIV infection. The feasible overall rate and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of the data on OMs were calculated. RESULTS: Risk group analysis revealed that, of 2

Immunopathogenesis of canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis.

Canine Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis is a spontaneously occurring inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa. An immune-mediated pathogenesis is suspected though not yet proven. We have recently reported on the clinical and histologic features, and identification of select leukocyte cell populations within the lesion. A clinical and histologic similarity to oral lichen planus of people was proposed. In the present study, these initial observations are extended by examining lesions from 24 dogs with clinical evidence of chronic ulcerative stomatitis. Because dogs with chronic ulcerative stomatitis

Oral manifestations of langerhans cell histiocytosis in a pediatric population: a clinical and histological study of 8 patients.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is a rare and protean disease of unknown etiology, clinically characterized by single or multiple osteolytic and/or soft tissue lesions. Oral involvement may predate systemic manifestations or mimic infectious/inflammatory disorders. In the present series, oral involvement characterized eight cases of pediatric Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis and oral symptoms represented a very early sign of this disease in four patients. A careful clinical investigation and a proper histologic analysis were required for achieving a definite diagnosis and for confirming clinical su

The significance and management of periodontal lesions in HIV infection.

UNLABELLED: It is now almost 20 years since we reported the existence of a previously unknown lesion, oral hairy leukoplakia, and its unexpected nature as the only human disease in which there is prolific replication of the gamma-herpesvirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Since then, it has become clear that, in the HIV-infected population, oral lesions are of particular significance. Their presence in individuals of unknown HIV serostatus is highly suggestive of HIV infection, while in people who are known to be HIV-infected, the development of oral candidiasis or hairy leukoplakia--often the ver

Relationships of personality traits and stress to gingival status or soft-tissue oral pathology: an exploratory study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of personality traits and stress with gingival inflammation and with soft-tissue oral pathology. METHODS: Personality traits of psychoticism (P), extroversion and introversion (E), and neuroticism (N) were measured with Eysenck's personality questionnaire (EPQ). Stress was measured with a modified organizational and individual assessment survey (OIAS) developed by Hendrix. Military recruits from Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, were examined for soft-tissue oral pathology and gingival status at weeks one (n = 241) and six (n =
