The role of repetitive thinking and spirituality in the development of posttraumatic growth and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Both post-traumatic growth (PTG) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with spirituality and different kinds of repetitive thinking, such as deliberate rumination (DR) and intrusive rumination (IR), respectively. This study aimed to examine if spirituality modifies the relationship between types of rumination and trauma outcomes. Ninety-six students completed an online survey of four questionnaires in a cross-sectional online survey: The Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale, the Event Related Rumination Inventory, the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Short form and the Expres

Treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency via Daily Intravascular Injections in a Child with Bleeding Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The standard of treatment for pediatric growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is daily subcutaneous recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) injections. The efficacy of rhGH treatment given as daily intravenous (IV) boluses is not known. Case Presentation. A female with protein C deficiency, a severe bleeding disorder characterized by thrombosis formation, was diagnosed with GHD at age four years. She has been receiving daily protein C infusion through a permanent port since the newborn period. GHD was treated with daily IV rhGH boluses given through the port following protein C infusion.

Longitudinal Evaluation of Cerebral Growth Across Childhood in Boys and Girls With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral overgrowth is frequently reported in children but not in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This suggests that early cerebral overgrowth is followed by normalization of cerebral volumes. However, this notion is predicated on cross-sectional research that is vulnerable to sampling bias. For example, autistic individuals with disproportionate megalencephaly, a subgroup with higher rates of intellectual disability and larger cerebral volumes, may be underrepresented in studies of adolescents and adults. Furthermore, extant studies have cohorts that are predominately

Preterm Birth and Poor Fetal Growth as Risk Factors of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an association between prematurity and attention- abstract deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Results concerning late preterm infants are controversial, and studies examining fetal growth represented by weight for gestational age are scarce. Our objective was to examine the association between gestational age by each week of fetal maturity, weight for gestational age, and ADHD. METHODS: In this population-based study, 10 321 patients with ADHD, diagnosed according to the International Classification of Diseases and 38 355 controls individually match

Meier-Gorlin syndrome: growth and secondary sexual development of a microcephalic primordial dwarfism disorder.

Meier-Gorlin syndrome (MGS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by primordial dwarfism, microtia, and patellar aplasia/hypoplasia. Recently, mutations in the ORC1, ORC4, ORC6, CDT1, and CDC6 genes, encoding components of the pre-replication complex, have been identified. This complex is essential for DNA replication and therefore mutations are expected to impair cell proliferation and consequently could globally reduce growth. However, detailed growth characteristics of MGS patients have not been reported, and so this is addressed here through study of 45 MGS patients, the lar

Maternal common mental disorder and infant growth--a cross-sectional study from Malawi.

The objective of the study was to investigate the association between maternal common mental disorder (CMD) and infant growth in rural Malawi. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a district hospital child health clinic. Participants were consecutive infants due for measles vaccination, and their mothers. Mean infant weight-for-age and length-for-age z-scores were compared between infants of mothers with and without CMD as measured using the self-reporting questionnaire (SRQ). Of 519 eligible infants/mothers, 501 were included in the analysis. Median infant age was 9.9 months. 29.9% of mot

IMAGe syndrome: a complex disorder affecting growth, adrenal and gonadal function, and skeletal development.

IMAGe syndrome (intrauterine growth restriction, metaphyseal dysplasia, adrenal hypoplasia congenita, genital abnormalities; MIM 300290) is a multisystem disorder with a broad phenotype, which, if unrecognized, may result in major and possibly life-threatening complications. Initial clinical features overlap with those of Russell-Silver syndrome (RSS) and isolated growth hormone (GH) deficiency, conditions from which it must be distinguished. We report an Australian male with adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) in association with IMAGe syndrome. The patient had intrauterine growth restriction

Growth deficits and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder revisited: impact of gender, development, and treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Although the relationship between putative growth deficits and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been examined in boys, this issue has not been evaluated in girls. METHODS: Height and weight were examined in 124 female ADHD children and 116 female controls using age and parental height corrections, attending to issues of pubertal stage and treatment. Also, we examined the interaction between ADHD status and gender on growth outcomes using data from 124 ADHD and 109 control males. RESULTS: The ADHD-growth association was not moderated by gender. No deficits in age

Growth hormone response to guanfacine in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study evaluated a method for assessing central noradrenergic function in children via the growth hormone response to a single dose of the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist guanfacine and examined whether this measure distinguishes between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) boys with and without reading disabilities (RD). METHODS: Plasma growth hormone was assessed before and after the oral administration of guanfacine and placebo in boys with ADHD who were divided into subgroups based on the presence (n = 3) or absence (n = 5) of RD. RESULTS: Guanfa

Developmental delay and growth failure caused by a peroxisomal disorder, dihydroxyacetonephosphate acyltransferase (DHAP-AT) deficiency.

We describe a 6 1/2-year-old-girl presenting with a unique phenotype and dihydroxyacetonephosphate acyltransferase (DHAP-AT) deficiency (1.6% of control activity in cultured fibroblasts), a peroxisomal enzyme deficiency which was reported previously to cause rhizomelic chondroplasia punctata (RCDP). Her phenotype is less severe than that seen in classical RCDP, and is notable for short stature, microcataracts, normal limbs, mild hypotonia, and severe mental retardation. Epiphyseal stippling is present. This patient illustrates the variability of peroxisomal disorders whereby a specific defect

[A syndrome of congenital diabetes with disordered epiphyseal growth with autosomal recessive inheritance (author's transl)].

A child is described with insulin dependent diabetes of neonatal onset and a disorder of endochondral growth. Radiological and histological bone appearances differ from those observed in other types of chondrodysplasia. The association of diabetes and chondrodysplasia is not likely to occur by chance but is probably a genuine clinical entity. The condition is probably inherited as a autosomal recessive and its possible pathogenesis is discussed.

Posttraumatic Growth, Anxiety, Depression, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Intensive Care Unit Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) survivors often report poor physical health, cognitive dysfunction, and mental health sequelae (post-intensive care syndrome). However, critical illness and the associated treatments in ICUs can also lead to posttraumatic growth, defined as positive changes in life philosophy, relationships, and personal growth attributed to the process of gaining understanding and making sense of a traumatic event. OBJECTIVES: To characterize posttraumatic growth in ICU survivors. METHODS: This secondary data analysis explored the in-hospital factors linked to posttraum

Maternal sleep disordered breathing and offspring growth outcome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sleep disordered breathing is extremely common in pregnancy and is a risk factor for maternal complications. Animal models demonstrate that intermittent hypoxia causes abnormal fetal growth. However, there are conflicting data on the association between maternal sleep disordered breathing and offspring growth in humans. We investigated this association by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. Sixty-three manuscripts, and total study population of 67, 671, 110 pregnant women were included. Thirty-one studies used subjective methods to define sleep disordered breathing, 24 applied ob

Intrauterine Growth Restriction Induces Adulthood Chronic Metabolic Disorder in Cardiac and Skeletal Muscles.

OBJECTIVE: Although population-based studies of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) demonstrated a series of postnatal complications, several studies identified that IUGR could definitely cause dysfunction of metabolism of cardiac and skeletal muscles in the perinatal period and early life. However, it is still unknown if such metabolic alternation would remain for long term or not, and whether normal protein diet administration postnatally would protect the IUGR offsprings from a "catch-up growth" and be able to reverse the premature metabolic remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We establi

Self-compassion in individuals with substance use disorder: the association with personal growth and well-being.

Individuals with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) who do not have empathy toward oneself, or self-compassion, may limit their opportunities for personal growth and overall well-being. Due to scarce empirical studies examining interactions between self-compassion, personal growth and well-being in persons with SUD, the goal of this research was to examine associations among these concepts. A survey was administered to patients in treatment for SUD using validated scales (Sussex-Oxford Compassion for the Self Scale (SSOCS-S), Personal Growth Initiative (PGI) Scale-II, and World Health Organization (

Are anxiety disorders publications continuing on a trajectory of growth? A look at Boschen's (2008) predictions and beyond.

The relative health of a field of research can be approximated by assessing peer-reviewed journal publication trends for articles pertinent to that field. The most recent comprehensive assessment of publication trends in the anxiety disorders indicated that the field was on a continuing trajectory of growth (Boschen, 2008). We conducted an updated search of Medline for publications on each of the anxiety disorders from 2006 to 2016. Results indicated that there was continuing growth in anxiety disorders research overall and, particularly, for posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disor

Decreased levels of serum fibroblast growth factor-2 in children with autism spectrum disorder.

The neurodevelopment and functioning of the central nervous system, and especially the cerebral cortex, have basic importance to understand neuropsychiatric disorders like autism. Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) plays a very important role in the development and functioning of the cortex. FGF-2 is related to developmental processes in the central nervous system such as neurogenesis, migration, differentiation and survival. This study researched the serum FGF-2 levels in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). With this aim, 60 ASD children and 40 healthy controls were compared. We app

The role of fibroblast growth factor 23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder.

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF-23) is a bone-derived hormone involved in the regulation of phosphate homeostasis. FGF-23 levels are extremely elevated in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and there is evidence supporting the role of this hormone in the pathogenesis of Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD). Furthermore, recent data associates FGF-23 with the pathogenesis of systemic complications of CKD-MBD. The increasing evidence that the consequences of abnormal mineral metabolism are not restricted to bone disease changed the approach to the pathophysiology and treatment o
