To determine the mechanism and pathway of entry of polar nonelectrolytes into bile, we studied first the permeation of [3H]H2O, [14C]urea, [14C]erythritol, [14C]mannitol, [3H]sucrose, [3H]inulin and [3H]dextran across an isolated, in situ perfused segment of the guinea pig's extrahepatic bile duct. Psoriasis vulgaris is an uncommon skin disease among Nigerians. There were only 44 cases out of a total of about 5,250 skin patients (0.8%) seen during the 7-year period from 1977 to 1984 at the consultant skin clinic, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna, Nigeria. Males were predominant. The age range was 1 1/2 months to 65 years, with a mean age of 29.8 years. The peak incidence was in the 21-30-year group. Clinical features were the same as in Europeans, but morbidity was very low. Arthropathy and nail involvement were rare, comprising only 4.5 and 15.9% of cases, respectively.

Huntington's disease (HD) was observed in a 45-year-old male Melanesian patient from the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. The patient had multiple peripheral nerve palsies as a result of tuberculoid leprosy and had been resident in the leprosy ward of Goroka Base Hospital for over 6 years. During this time his HD had remained undiagnosed. This is the first report of HD in the Highlands of New Guinea.

The ability of penicillins of varying lipophilicity to induce and elicit cellular allergic responses were analysed in guinea pigs. Epicutaneous application of the penicillins benzylpenicillin (Bp), cloxacillin (Clox) and Bacampicillin (Bamp) did not cause any unspecific skin irritation. Intracutaneously injected, however, Bamp, Clox and to a lesser extent Bp caused irritation at concentrations of 1.25%. Solutions of 0.12% of penicillins were inactive in this respect. Cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity (CBH) is an immunologic reaction extensively studied in the guinea pig. We elicited this reaction in the conjunctiva by systemically sensitizing guinea pigs to ovalbumin in incomplete Freund's adjuvant. Skin tests showed basophils in the skin one week after sensitization when challenged with ovalbumin. However, the conjunctiva showed an eosinophilic reaction with few basophils. This is compatible with other extracutaneous manifestation of the CBH reaction.
