[Human T-lymphotropic virus I/II detection in Chilean patients from Sexually Transmitted Diseases clinics].

BACKGROUND: The human T-lymphotropic virus I (HTLV-I) causes spastic para-paresis and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. It can be sexually transmitted and is highly prevalent in Central and South America. AIM: To study HTLV-I/IIprevalence in serum samples obtained from two Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) clinics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred serum samples were randomly chosen from two reference STD centers of Santiago. The presence of specific HTLV I/II antibodies was detected by indirect immunofluorescence. RESULTS: The analyzed samples came from participants aged 14 to 70 years. Fo

[A case of bacterial meningitis induced by strongyloidiasis].

A 75-year-old female with diabetes mellitus, who was born and lived in West north Kyusyu, was admitted to our hospital, because of unconsciousness and loss of appetite. The physical examination showed neck stiffness and a high fever. The laboratory data showed accentuation of inflammatory reaction and azotemia and positive HTLV-1 antibody. The spinal fluid showed increase of cell count and amount of protein. A stool and sputum smear revealed rhabditis form larvae of the nematode. Antibiotics and ivermectin were administered for the bacterial meningitis and hyperinfection of the strongyloides,

Estimation of the window period of human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 and 2 tests by a lookback study of seroconverters among Japanese voluntary blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Japan is endemic for human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), and the horizontal transmission of HTLV-1 is often reported. However, the window period (WP) for serologic or molecular screening is unclear. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Results for anti-HTLV-1 screening and confirmatory tests obtained from 648 591 repeated blood donors in the Kyushu district, one of the most endemic areas of HTLV-1 in the world, were evaluated. A lookback study was conducted for seroconverters. RESULTS: During 2012 to 2019, 436 seroconverters (155 men, 281women) were identified with use of a screeni

Hepatitis C virus and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

The etiology of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) remains a controversial matter, but, in the last few years, considerable evidence suggests that aberrations of the immune system and viruses may act as etiologic agents, in at least some cases of NHL. In fact, patients with primary immuno-deficiencies, or those suffering from diseases characterized by autoimmune dysfunction, show an increased risk for the development of NHL. Several viruses have been identified as possible etiologic agents for NHL; one of the best studied is the Epstein-Barr virus, which was detected in cultures of tumor cells from

Detection of HTLV-I and -II in Scottish blood donor samples and archive donations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Positive samples identified during routine serological screening for HCV (hepatitis C virus), HBV (hepatitis B virus) and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) are confirmed by nucleic acid testing in the SNBTS (Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service) PCR Reference laboratory. Serological screening for HTLV-I (human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I) and -II was implemented in Scotland in November 2002, at which time a PCR assay was not available for confirmation. Our aim was to develop a real-time PCR assay that could be used for the confirmation of samples showing

Exposure to hepatitis B and C and to HTLV-1 and 2 among Israeli drug abusers in Jerusalem.

The incidence of exposure to hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) viruses and to that of HTLV 1 and 2 were investigated in a group of 181 illicit drug users attending a drug rehabilitation centre in Jerusalem. In this predominantly male group, 28% were intravenous drug abusers (IVDAs) and 72% non-IVDAs; 92% of the individuals were of Middle Eastern descent (of which 40% were of a Moroccan descent). Antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) were found in 54% of the IVDAs compared with 4.5% in the non-IVDAs (p < 0.001), indicating the presence of a significant reservoir of HCV among this IVDA group. Cutaneous T cell lymphomas: mycosis fungoides, Sezary syndrome and HTLV-I-associated adult T cell leukemia (ATL) in Mali, West Africa: a clinical, pathological and immunovirological study of 14 cases and a review of the African ATL cases.

Cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCL) are rare lymphoproliferative diseases, which are frequently suspected to be of viral origin. As very few data were available concerning cutaneous T cell lymphomas in tropical Africa, we undertook a clinical, histopathological, immunological and viro-molecular study of patients with a clinical diagnosis of cutaneous lymphoma, in Bamako, Mali. While prior to this study, no case of CTCL had been reported in this country, 14 patients (five women, nine men; mean age 58 years) with a diagnosis of cutaneous lymphoma were seen over a period of 30 months (1992-1994) in

Isolation of an in vitro transmissible agent with reverse transcriptase activity from a blood donor with a borderline-positive HIV-1 serology for more than five years.

BACKGROUND: Reverse transcriptase (RT) is present in all infectious retrovirus particles. Sensitive RT tests should thus detect all such particles. A family of ultrasensitive RT tests, product-enhanced reverse transcriptase (PERT) assays, have been designed. Accumulated results show that (i) a first version of the PERT assay that uses microtiter/ELISA technology detects RT of only 3-11 retroviral particles, (ii) very different human and animal lenti- and oncoviruses are detected very sensitively, (iii) HIV-1 is detected as sensitively as with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for viral RNA, and

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL): report of two fully documented Hellenic patients.

ATLL is etiologically associated with HTLV-I retrovirus. A population of 10 to 20 million worldwide is estimated to be infected by the virus, but only 1-4% develop ATLL during a 70-year lifespan. The latency period is more than 30 years. The aim of this study was to report two cases of ATLL in Greek patients with the concomitant study of their family members. A 55-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man presented with leucocytosis and lymphocytosis. Both were asymptomatic and physical examination was unremarkable except for minimal lymphadenopathy in the second patient. In both patients blood sme

HIV/HTLV-1/2 Co-Infection in the Peruvian Amazon: Prevalence and Associated Factors.

Co-infection with human T-cell lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) and HIV is not routinely screened for, yet it may significantly influence clinical progression, mortality, and quality of life in affected individuals. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of HTLV-1/2 co-infection among adults living with HIV and to identify associated epidemiological factors in the Peruvian Amazon. A cross-sectional study was conducted including patients receiving antiretroviral therapy through the multidisciplinary TARGA program in Iquitos, Peru, during the second quarter of 2013. New entity, definition and diagnostic criteria of cutaneous adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma: human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 proviral DNA load can distinguish between cutaneous and smoldering types.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) has been divided into four subtypes up to now: (i) acute; (ii) lymphoma; (iii) chronic; and (iv) smoldering. Skin lesion(s) may be present and the cases showing less than 5% abnormal T-lymphocytes in peripheral blood without involvement of other organs, have been classified as smoldering ATLL. However, this type of ATLL with skin manifestations had a worse prognosis than that without skin lesions. This study aimed to define and distinguish cutaneous ATLL lacking nodal lymphoma and leukemic change from smoldering ATLL. We propose an entity of cutaneous ATLL

Descriptive study of HTLV infection in a population of pregnant women from the state of Pará, Northern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, studies have shown that HTLV seroprevalence among pregnant women varies from 0 to 1.8%. However, this seroprevalence was unknown in the State of Pará, Brazil. The present study describes, for the first time, the HTLV seroprevalence among pregnant women from the State of Pará, Northern Brazil. METHODS: 13,382 pregnant women were submitted to HTLV screening during prenatal care, and those with non-seronegative results to anti-HTLV were submitted to Western blot (WB) test to confirm and separate HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 carriers. RESULTS: HTLV seroprevalence in the population

Interaction of human immunodeficiency virus type 1, human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I), and HTLV-II with in vitro-generated dendritic cells.

Although it is known that impairment of dendritic cells (DC) plays a role in the pathogenesis and immunosuppression of retrovirus-associated diseases, it is not clear whether, or to what extent, these antigen-presenting cells themselves become infected. The realization that the cells can be generated in vitro in larger numbers than can be isolated from circulating blood or bone marrow raised the possibility that they could be used for therapeutic purposes. Therefore, we investigated whether DC generated in vitro from CD34 precursors are susceptible to infection when cocultured with human immun
