Habituation Does Not Change Running Economy in Advanced Footwear Technology.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare running economy across habituated and nonhabituated advanced footwear technology (AFT) in trained long-distance runners. METHODS: A total of 16 participants completed up to six 5-minute trials in 1 to 3 pairs of their own habituated shoes and 3 different and standardized AFTs at individual marathon pace. We measured oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production and expressed running economy as oxygen uptake (in milliliters oxygen per kilogram per minute), oxygen cost of transport (oxygen per kilogram per minute), energetic cost (in watts per kilogram), and e

Cardiovascular stress reactivity, habituation, and adiposity.

The relationship between adiposity and cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality is complex. One pathway through which adiposity may influence future health outcomes is by altering how biological systems respond to stress. The current study aimed to examine the association between two metrics of adiposity (body mass index and waist-hip ratio) and two indices of cardiovascular stress responses (reactivity and habituation). A sample of 455 participants (Mean age = 19.47, SD = 1.25 years; BMI = 24.32, SD = 5.04 kg/m2 ; 62% female; 17.9% Hispanic/Latino; 65.2% White, 18.7% Asian, 7.9% Black,

Give me a pain that I am used to: distinct habituation patterns to painful and non-painful stimulation.

Pain habituation is associated with a decrease of activation in brain areas related to pain perception. However, little is known about the specificity of these decreases to pain, as habituation has also been described for other responses like spinal reflexes and other sensory responses. Thus, it might be hypothesized that previously reported reductions in activation are not specifically related to pain habituation. For this reason, we performed a 3 T fMRI study using either painful or non-painful electrical stimulation via an electrode attached to the back of the left hand. Contrasting painful

Disrupted Habituation in the Early Stage of Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Learning and memory are impaired in schizophrenia. Some theories have proposed that one form of memory, habituation, is particularly impaired. Preliminary evidence suggests that memory impairment is associated with failed hippocampal habituation in patients with chronic schizophrenia. We studied how abnormal habituation of the hippocampus is related to relational memory deficits in the early stage of psychosis. METHODS: We measured hippocampal activity in 62 patients with early psychosis and 70 healthy individuals using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Habituation was define

Reduced insula habituation associated with amplification of trigeminal brainstem input in migraine.

Background Impaired sensory processing in migraine can reflect diminished habituation, increased activation, or even increased gain or amplification of activity from the primary synapse in the brainstem to higher cortical/subcortical brain regions. Methods We scanned 16 episodic migraine (interictal) and 16 healthy controls (cross-sectional study), and evaluated brain response to innocuous air-puff stimulation over the right forehead in the ophthalmic nerve (V1) trigeminal territory. We further evaluated habituation, and cortical/subcortical amplification relative to spinal trigeminal nucleus

Motor learning characterizes habilitation of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: This study tested in children with cerebral palsy (CP) whether motor habilitation resembles motor learning. METHODS: Twelve children with hemiplegic CP ages 5 to 12 years with moderate to severe motor impairments underwent a 16-session robot-mediated planar therapy program to improve upper limb reach, with a focus on shoulder and elbow movements. Participants were trained to execute point-to-point movements (with robot assistance) with the affected arm and were evaluated (without robot assistance) in trained (point-to-point) and untrained (circle-drawing) conditions. Outcomes were

Effects of experienced disgust on habituation during repeated exposure to threat-relevant stimuli in blood-injection-injury phobia.

Despite growing evidence implicating disgust in the etiology of blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia, the relevance of disgust for exposure-based treatment of BII phobia remains largely unknown. Individuals with BII phobia were randomly assigned to a disgust (view vomit videos) or neutral activation (view waterfall videos) condition. They were then exposed to 14 videotaped blood draws, during which fear and disgust levels were repeatedly assessed. Participants then engaged in a behavioral avoidance test (BAT) consisting of exposure to threat-relevant stimuli. Examination of outcome comparing th

Decreased Fos protein expression in rat caudal vestibular nucleus is associated with motion sickness habituation.

We investigated the temporal change of Fos protein expression in the caudal vestibular nucleus of rats exposed to daily 2-h Ferris-wheel like (FWL) rotation. Repeated rotation (2h daily for 14 consecutive days) caused an initial increase in defecation, followed by a gradual decline back to the baseline level after 8 rotation sessions. Unlike defecation, the Kaolin consumption of rats showed a bitonic function during the daily rotation sessions (2h daily for 33 consecutive days) and finally recovered to the baseline after about 31 sessions. Immunohistochemistry study revealed increased Fos immu

Deficits in novelty exploration after controlled cortical impact.

Experimental models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been utilized to characterize the behavioral derangements associated with brain trauma. Several studies exist characterizing motor function in the controlled cortical impact (CCI) injury model of TBI, but less research has focused on how CCI affects exploratory behavior. The goal of this study was to characterize deficits in three novelty exploration tasks after the CCI. Under anesthesia, 37 adult male Sprague Dawley rats received CCI (2.7 mm and 2.9 mm; 4 m/sec) over the right parietal cortex or sham surgery. For days 1-6 post-surgery,

Effects of rating parameters on assessment of neuroleptic-induced vacuous chewing movements.

Long-term administration of neuroleptics to rats produces a syndrome of vacuous chewing movements (VCMs). The validity of the VCM syndrome as a model for tardive dyskinesia (TD) in humans is unclear. This is due, in part, to inconsistencies between studies. Methods for rating VCMs have varied markedly and could account for the inconsistencies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the importance of the different methods on VCM scores. The effects of habituation and length of rating sessions were examined in rats habituated for 2 min, 1 h, or several hours over 4 days, compared to unhabitua

Signalled versus unsignalled intravenous amphetamine: large differences in the acute psychomotor response and sensitization.

Both the acute psychomotor response and the development of sensitization to amphetamine are attenuated if i.p. injections are given in the cage where animals live (HOME), relative to when injections are given in a novel (NOVEL), but otherwise physically identical cage. It was suggested that this effect of environment on sensitization may be due to the relative availability of cues predictive of drug administration in the two conditions. It was hypothesized, therefore, that removal of all environmental cues predictive of drug administration would attenuate the development of sensitization even

[Effect of hydrocortisone on synaptic transmission in surviving slices of the olfactory cortex from the rat brain].

A study was made of the effect of bath-applied hydrocortisone (10(-4) M) on excitatory transmission of the lateral olfactory tract (LOT) - superficial pyramidal cell synapse of the rat olfactory cortex slice. Population EPSP and IPSP were depressed for 6-12 min., then they were increased (60 min.) by hydrocortisone. Recovery of evoked potentials was long (40-60 min.) at washing of slices hy a normal incubation medium. Habituation of synaptic potentials during LOT repeating stimulation was deteriorated by hydrocortisone application in perfusion solution. The data obtained were considered to be

Perinatal and behavioral characteristics of neonates born to multirisk families.

The perinatal health status and behavioral characteristics of 47 newborns of multirisk (psychiatric and socioenvironmental) mothers who received either comprehensive intervention services or community-based services are described. Obstetric and postnatal health measures did not differ between groups, but there was a tendency for infants of comprehensively treated women to be healthier. Both groups were similar on Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale cluster scores at 3 to 5 days of age. However, by 1 month of age, there was very little progress in Orientation and Autonomic Regulation

Adjunctive drinking and the pituitary-adrenal response: effects of prior aversive stimulation (preshock).

Two groups of rats were exposed to an intermittent food schedule which induced polydipsia. One group of rats had previously been exposed to inescapable shock. This group showed reduced amounts of polydipsia, and the polydipsia was ineffective in reducing arousal levels (relative to those of the control group), as indexed by plasma corticosterone levels.

Effects of d-amphetamine and apomorphine in a new animal model of petit mal epilepsy.

d-Amphetamine is effective in controlling seizures in petit mal epilepsy. The flash-evoked afterdis-charge (FEAD) in rats has been proposed as a model of the peit mal seizure. The experiments reported here investigated the dose response relationship for the suppression of FEAD by d-amphetamine, and compared its effects with those of the dopamine-mimetic, apomorphine. Significant suppression of FEAD was observed at doses of d-amphetamine greater than 0.2 mg/kg. A maximum decrease of 60% occurred at 1.2 mg/kg. Higher doses did not result in any further suppression. In contrast, apomorphine and n

Familial anthropophobia in pointer dogs?

This article assesses a dog model in terms of a proposed cross-species definition of phobia, the model referring to a strain of unstable dogs that has been produced by selection and inbreeding. The unstable dogs are contrasted with a strain of stable dogs. New findings are presented on approach and activity behavior toward three stimulus objects (man, another dog, and a sheet-covered chair) in a naturalistic setting. The fear response of unstable dogs to objects other than man habituates gradually, whereas the fear response to the sight of man is far more enduring, suggesting a relatively spec

The blink reflex in coma and after recovery from coma.

Comparative studies of the blink reflex in a series of head injuries through the stages of coma and recovery from coma in a series of miscellaneous hemispheral lesions, and in a normal series, reveals that, although the principal centre for the R1 component of the blink reflex seems to be localised in the upper pons, the seat of the R2 late component is in the reticular system. The reappearance of this late component of the blink reflex in our cases of coma although seeming to depend on the integrity of the mesencephalic formation, correlates with the recovery of the patient's alertness. On th
