Cutaneous inflammation was induced by debromoaplysiatoxin, a purified toxin extracted from Lyngbya majuscula Gomont. This alga causes a seaweed dermatitis that occurs in persons who have swum off the coast of Oahu in Hawaii. By topical application, the toxin was found to produce an irritant pustular folliculitis in humans and to cause a severe cutaneous inflammatory reaction in the rabbit and in hairless mice.

Weight and height values measured in a population-based case-control study of breast cancer conducted in Hawaii were used to validate body size information recorded on driver's licenses. It is concluded that this information is sufficiently accurate to justify the use of driver's license registration files as a means of assembling large prospective or historical cohorts to study the health hazards of obesity.

As part of the Healthy Hawaii Initiative professional education campaign, 14 focus groups were conducted across the state with primary care providers, staff and community leaders to determine what messages about healthy lifestyles work with patients in health care settings. Focus group members indicated that culturally sensitive and personalized messages, positive reinforcement, and teamwork are most effective in counseling patients.

Understanding causes of death can aid management and recovery of endangered bird populations. Toward those ends, we systematically examined 300 carcasses of endangered Hawaiian Geese (Nene; Branta sandvicensis) from Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, and Kauai between 1992 and 2013. An innovative school-based telehealth technology was introduced in Hawaii with the purposes of: (1) evaluating students for medical/developmental conditions with educational implications, (2) providing a professionally-monitored Internet-based system of learning/development, and (3) delivering medically-based physical and occupational therapy at the students school. Electronically recorded satisfaction surveys from parents, teachers, and providers revealed significant improvement in all three areas.

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is a global threat to cetaceans. We report a novel morbillivirus from a Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) that stranded in Maui, Hawaii in 2018 that is dissimilar to the beaked whale morbillivirus previously identified from Hawaii and to other CeMV strains. We examined the prevalence and predictors of back pain (BKP) among 645 postmenopausal Japanese-American women in Hawaii with a mean age of 73.9 years (ranging from 55 to 93 years) and serial spine radiographs during the preceding 12 years. The overall prevalence of BKP was 32.9% and appeared to be constant up to age 80, with an increase thereafter. At most ages, pain in the lower back was the most common, upper BKP was less so, and mid-BKP was the least common. During the summer of 1987, a common source waterborne outbreak of leptospirosis occurred on the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. Eight leptospirosis cases were identified using the microscopic agglutination test. Methodologic weaknesses in this technique were responsible for the initial missed diagnosis on six of the eight cases. All cases had repeated exposure to the Waimea River. A wide array of animal reservoirs and optimal water conditions may have been factors in this outbreak.
