[Thoracic radiography in occupational health examination of hospital personnel. Making decisions].

BACKGROUND: The routine chest radiography has been legally suppressed because of its low diagnostic profitability in non selected populations. Health surveillance of occupational populations at respiratory risk is entering a transitional period, where new guidelines are needed. Therefore, we determined to study the percentage of pathological findings in the chest radiographies of health examinations for hospital workers and whether it was possible to obtain explicative models allowing to calculate the probability of radiographies alteration. METHODS: A representative stratified sample of work

A long-term surveillance of occupational health hazards faced by cadmium workers.

The decrease or damage of renal tubular functions by cadmium (Cd) exposure is designated as the critical effect on human body. When the Cd workers suffer from tubular damage, it is matter of concern whether the damage is reversible or irreversible. In this study, chronic influences of long-term exposure to Cd dust or fumes in the working environment were clarified. Besides the survey on Cd contents in work environment and production amounts of Cd pigments in the factory, the changes of Cd concentration in blood and urine, beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2MG) in serum and urine, C beta 2-MG/Ccr, the

Occupational and environmental health problems of the developing oil shale industry: a review.

The American oil shale industry is on the threshold of commercial industrial development. Potential occupational hazards include shalosis or oil shale pneumoconiosis, dermatoses, cancer of the skin, lung, and possibly other sites, and accidents. Air, water, and solid waste pollution problems are complicated by the aridity of the Green River oil shale formation located in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. The region currently lacks the schools, health facilities, community services, and skilled labor required for large-scale development. The oil shale industry faces an opportunity and a challenge of

Health Policy Perspectives-Realizing the Potential of Occupational Therapy in Supporting Postsecondary Student Mental Health and Success.

Postsecondary institutions around the world are grappling with how best to respond to what is described as a crisis in student mental health, with urgent calls for evidence-based advocacy, campaigning, and global action. In response to this call to action, in this article we advocate for a stronger role for occupational therapy in supporting student mental health in postsecondary settings through the enactment of the Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting University and Colleges, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2025. We share examples of innovative occupation

Utilization of HIV and tuberculosis services by health care workers in Uganda: implications for occupational health policies and implementation.

BACKGROUND: Access to HIV testing and subsequent care among health care workers (HCWs) form a critical component of TB infection control measures for HCWs. Challenges to and gaps in access to HIV services among HCWs may thus compromise TB infection control. This study assessed HCWs HIV and TB screening uptake and explored their preferences for provision of HIV and TB care. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study involving 499 HCWs and 8 focus group discussions was conducted in Mukono and Wakiso districts in Uganda between October 2010 and February 2011. RESULTS: Overall, 5% of the HCW

Current practice in ionizing-radiation health examinations at occupational health institutions in Japan: a nationwide questionnaire survey.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the implementation of ionizing-radiation health examinations at occupational health institutions in Japan and examine how these practices are implemented and interpreted within the current legal framework. We also identified operational factors that may influence their contribution to evaluating radiation-related health effects, fitness-for-work judgments, and occupational radiation protection. METHODS: A cross-sectional online questionnaire survey was conducted from January 28 to February 18, 2025, among member institutions listed in the National Federation of Ind

Qualitative interview study of strategies to support healthcare personnel mental health through an occupational health lens.

BACKGROUND: Employee Occupational Health ('occupational health') clinicians have expansive perspectives of the experience of healthcare personnel. Integrating mental health into the purview of occupational health is a newer approach that could combat historical limitations of healthcare personnel mental health programmes, which have been isolated and underused. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to document innovation and opportunities for supporting healthcare personnel mental health through occupational health clinicians. This work was part of a national qualitative needs assessment of employee occupation

Improving the quality of workers' compensation health care delivery: the Washington State Occupational Health Services Project.

This article has summarized research and policy activities undertaken in Washington State over the past several years to identify the key problems that result in poor quality and excessive disability among injured workers, and the types of system and delivery changes that could best address these problems in order to improve the quality of occupational health care provided through the workers' compensation system. Our investigations have consistently pointed to the lack of coordination and integration of occupational health services as having major adverse effects on quality and health outcome

Health standards for occupational noise exposure. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Labor. Final rule.

This final comprehensive rule replaces MSHA's existing standards for occupational noise exposure in coal mines and metal and nonmetal mines. The final rule establishes uniform requirements to protect the Nation's miners from occupational noise-induced hearing loss. The rule is derived in part from existing MSHA noise standards, and from the Department of Labor's existing occupational noise exposure standard for general industry promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). As a result of the Agency's ongoing review of its safety and health standards, MSHA determined

Hepatitis A among health workers in Paris hospitals. Occupational Health Physicians of Paris Hospital (AP-HP).

To design a vaccination strategy against hepatitis A among hospital employees, we carried out a serological survey of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in 10 university hospitals in the Paris area. Subjects under 60 years of age were consecutively enrolled by occupational health services and tested for IgG to HAV by ELISA. Of the 1,516 subjects recruited, 926 were health workers (HW), 322 clerks, and 268 cooks or kitchen employees. Among HW and clerks the HAV seroprevalence was 53.8% (95% CI: 44.0-65.6), increasing with age and being higher among employees of African or Caribbean origin than t

Health effects of outdoor air pollution. Committee of the Environmental and Occupational Health Assembly of the American Thoracic Society.

Particles, SOx, and acid aerosols are a complex group of distinct pollutants that have common sources and usually covary in concentration. During the past two decades, the chemical characteristics and the geographic distribution of sulfur oxide and particulate pollution have been altered by control strategies, specifically taller stacks for power plants, put in place in response to air pollution regulations adopted in the early 1970s. While the increasing stack heights have lowered local ambient levels, the residence time of SOx and particles in the air have been increased, thereby promoting t

Allergic contact dermatitis and other occupational skin diseases in health care workers in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases in 2005-2016.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers are an important risk group for occupational skin disease (OSD). AIMS: To study diagnoses and causes of OSDs in health care workers in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases (FROD) in 2005-2016. METHODS: We searched the FROD for dermatological cases (a) in health care-related occupations defined by ISCO-08 and (b) in the industrial branch of health care defined by European industry standard classification system (NACE rev. 2). RESULTS: Health care workers comprised 19% of all OSD cases in the FROD, and irritant contact dermatitis dominated the diagnose
