Health workforce planning models for older adults in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: As the population across the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) ages, healthcare systems are increasingly strained by the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and the growing demand for chronic geriatric care. Effective health workforce planning is essential to address these evolving needs. However, limited evidence exists on the applicability of workforce planning models tailored specifically to older adults in the EMR. The purpose of this review is to examine current models and strategies in health workforce planning for older adult care

Enhancing Access to Family Planning Services in Uganda Through Community Health Extension Workers: Protocol for a Pilot Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, 22% of all women of reproductive age have an unmet need for family planning services. Access to contraceptive services, especially long-term reversible contraceptives such as implants, remains a challenge. The number of trained health providers is also not sufficient to address the needs for contraception. The Uganda Ministry of Health implemented a community-based implant provision pilot project where community health extension workers (CHEWs) were trained and accredited to insert implants at community level. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the implementation an

Assessing the knowledge, attitude and practice of family planning among women living in the Mbouda health district, Cameroon.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Promotion of family planning has been shown to reduce poverty, hunger, maternal and infant mortality, and contribute to women's empowerment. But many resource-limited countries still have very low rates of contraceptive use. The present study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of family planning among women living in a resource-poor rural setting. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in January 2010 in the Mbouda Health District, Cameroon. After a multistage random selection, 120 households were selected. Participants were women aged at lea

Effectiveness of discharge planning interventions on health-related outcomes among postpartum women: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum women frequently experience psychological distress, physical morbidities, and sub-optimal maternal-neonatal care skills. Structured discharge planning may mitigate these problems, yet its overall effectiveness and the active ingredients underpinning benefit remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To synthesis randomized and quasi-experimental evidence on the effectiveness of discharge planning interventions for improving postpartum women's health outcomes and to identify intervention characteristics that modify this effectiveness. METHODS: Nine electronic databases (including PubMe

Postpartum modern family planning among women living with HIV attending care at health facilities in Busia County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: For women living with the human immunodeficiency virus (WLHIV), preventing untimed pregnancies during the postpartum period reduces vertical transmission and improves other maternal and child health outcomes. In Kenya, Busia County's HIV prevalence and mother-to-child transmission rate are higher than the national average yet uptake of postpartum family planning (PPFP) is generally low. This study examined health system factors influencing the consistent use of PP modern FP methods among WLHIV in Busia County. METHODS: A retrospective study involving 314 WLHIV with children aged 1

Promoting community health and climate justice co-benefits: insights from a rural and remote island climate planning process.

Climate change is an environmental crisis, a health crisis, a socio-political and an economic crisis that illuminates the ways in which our human-environment relationships are arriving at crucial tipping points. Through these relational axes, social structures, and institutional practices, patterns of inequity are produced, wherein climate change disproportionately impacts several priority populations, including rural and remote communities. To make evidence-based change, it is important that engagements with climate change are informed by data that convey the nuance of various living realitie

Advance Care Planning and Health-Related Quality of Life in Huntington Disease: Results from a Multicenter National Study.

OBJECTIVE: With Huntington disease (HD), a fatal neurodegenerative disease where the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB) remains elevated as compared to other neurological disorders, it is unknown whether STB and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) affect plans for the end of life or more broadly, advance care planning (ACP). Conversely, it is unknown whether ACP would provoke future changes to STB and HRQoL. Therefore, we sought to evaluate whether STB and HRQoL patient-reported outcomes (PROs) contribute to ACP and whether ACP relates to changes in STB and HRQoL at 24 month

Do national health priorities align with Global Burden of Disease estimates on disease burden? An analysis of national health plans and official governmental websites.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the alignment of national health priorities with a country's burden of disease as measured by disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We identified priorities in national health plans and the 20 most burdensome conditions measured by DALYs from the 2017 Global Burden of Disease Study. We computed point-biserial correlations (rpb) between DALYs and being nominated as a health priority and the pooled proportion (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) of the 20 most burdensome conditions nominated as a priority across countries. RESULTS: We identified national health

Opportunities and challenges of joint crisis plans in mental healthcare: a qualitative interview study with mental health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric advance directives (PADs) and joint crisis plans (JCPs) are documents that allow users of mental health services to state their preferences for treatment for a future situation in which they are unable to give consent. In Germany, both PADs and JCPs are legally binding in the context of mental healthcare. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine mental health professionals' views on PADs and JCPs, identify challenges in their application in clinical practice, and derive recommendations for their implementation. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured inter

Engaging adolescents for sexual and reproductive health and rights and family planning advocacy in Pakistan: a qualitative study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young people aged 10-24 years comprise 32% of the total population of Pakistan. Adolescents and young people are a heterogeneous group-in different stages of development, living in different circumstances and with differing and changing needs. Neglect of specific adolescents' sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs can pose serious challenges and affect physical and mental health, future employment, economic well-being and adolescents' ability to reach their full potential. Evidence suggests that adolescents in Pakistan have poor access to SRH services, includi

Mortality from neglected tropical diseases in the state of Maranhão, Brazil: a guidance for health planning in vulnerable areas.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTD) are chronic infectious diseases affecting low-income populations (mainly in tropical and subtropical climates), characterized by high morbidity and low mortality. This study described the epidemiology of mortality from NTDs in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. Data from the Brazilian Mortality Information System evidenced 2,642 deaths from NTDs between 2001 and 2021; 31.13% were related to leishmaniasis (mainly the visceral form) and 20.82% to leprosy. A total of 211 municipalities in Maranhão had registered mortality due to NTDs. We identified, high-risk spatial
