The path to healthy ageing in China: a Peking University-Lancet Commission.

UNLABELLED: Around the world, populations are ageing at a faster pace than in the past and this demographic transition will have impacts on all aspects of societies. In May 2020, the UN General Assembly declared 2021–2030 the Decade of Healthy Ageing, highlighting the importance for policymakers across the world to focus policy on improving the lives of older people, both today and in the future. While rapid population ageing poses challenges, China’s rapid economic growth over the last forty years has created space for policy to assist older persons and families in their efforts to improve he

Gamma oscillations weaken with age in healthy elderly in human EEG.

Gamma rhythms (~20-70 Hz) are abnormal in mental disorders such as autism and schizophrenia in humans, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) models in rodents. However, the effect of normal aging on these oscillations is unknown, especially for elderly subjects in whom AD is most prevalent. In a first large-scale (236 subjects; 104 females) electroencephalogram (EEG) study on gamma oscillations in elderly subjects (aged 50-88 years), we presented full-screen visual Cartesian gratings that induced two distinct gamma oscillations (slow: 20-34 Hz and fast: 36-66 Hz). Power decreased with age for gamma,

The Influence of Age and Sex on Ocular Surface Microbiota in Healthy Adults.

PURPOSE: A growing body of evidence suggests that the microbiome of the ocular surface confers potent immunoregulatory functions and has a key role in the physiologic maintenance of healthy eyes and in the pathogenesis of ocular diseases. Although the microbiome is known to be affected by age and sex, the influence of these factors on ocular surface microbiota in healthy adults remains largely unknown. METHODS: Ocular surface microbiome samples were obtained from the inferior bulbar conjunctiva of 48 young and 42 old adults at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. Using metagenomic shotgun sequencing,

Brainstem cytokine changes in healthy ageing and Motor Neurone Disease.

Neuroinflammation is linked to healthy ageing, but its role in the development of age-related neurodegenerative diseases is unclear. In this pilot study we used a multiplex assay approach to compare 27 cytokines in 6 young adult and 6 ageing control brainstems with those in 6 MND brainstems. We report that healthy ageing is associated with significantly increased brainstem levels of IL-1β, IP-10 and MIP-1β which co-localise immunocytochemically to astrocytes. MND brainstem is also characterised by a general increase in both pro- and anti-cytokine levels, but fails to show the expected age-rela

Spatial and age-related changes in the microstructure of dystrophic and healthy diaphragms.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive degenerative disease that results in fibrosis and atrophy of muscles. The main cause of death associated with DMD is failure of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle with a fiber microstructure that differs across regions of the muscle. However, no studies to our knowledge have examined spatial variations of muscle fibers in dystrophic diaphragm or how aging affects those variations in DMD. In this study, diaphragms were obtained from mdx and healthy mice at ages three, seven, and ten months in the dorsal, midcostal, and ventral

Effect of age on atherogenicity of LDL and inflammatory markers in healthy women.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Since using LDL level alone is insufficient as a method to identify individuals with incident coronary artery disease (CAD), other factors may be implicated in the pathogenesis of CAD. Additionally, controversy still remains regarding whether there is an age-related increase in circulating cytokines in healthy individuals. We investigated the influence of age on atherogenicity of LDL and inflammatory markers in healthy women. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two thousand nine hundred forty four healthy women form 30-79 years old (23.3 ± 0.05 kg/m²) were categorized into 5 age groups:

Age-related changes in P wave morphology in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: We have previously documented significant differences in orthogonal P wave morphology between patients with and without paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). However, there exists little data concerning normal P wave morphology. This study was aimed at exploring orthogonal P wave morphology and its variations in healthy subjects. METHODS: 120 healthy volunteers were included, evenly distributed in decades from 20-80 years of age; 60 men (age 50+/-17) and 60 women (50+/-16). Six-minute long 12-lead ECG registrations were acquired and transformed into orthogonal leads. Using a previ

A comparison of selected phonatory behaviors of healthy aged and young adults.

Selected phonatory behaviors of healthy aged and young men and women were compared. Inverse-filtered air flow, electroglottograph (EGG), and intraoral air pressure signals were recorded as subjects phonated in each of four conditions: normal, soft, loud, loud/high pitched. Minimum flow offset, flow amplitude, air flow duty cycle, EGG duty cycle, estimated subglottal pressure, and fundamental frequency were derived from the recorded signals and compared among age/gender groups. Males had significantly greater flow amplitude than females regardless of age. Significant Age x Sex interactions were

Ovarian reserve and endothelial health in healthy reproductive-age women.

CONTEXT: While the literature suggests women with diminished ovarian reserve may have increased metabolic risk, implications for long-term health are unknown. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to investigate the relationship between ovarian reserve markers at baseline with a subsequent measure of endothelial dysfunction, as a proxy for cardiovascular risk. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in a community-based setting. Participants included 322 individuals from the Ovarian Aging Study (OVA), a National Institutes of Health-funded study of ovarian aging (average age 35.4 years at

[Promoting healthy ageing after 65 : the role of primary care].

In Switzerland, as elsewhere, life expectancy is increasing, but these additional years are not always lived in good health. The gap between life expectancy at birth and disability-free life expectancy remains substantial, with inequalities related to sex, education and socioeconomic context. For primary care physicians, the challenge is to identify patients at risk of functional decline and loss of autonomy at an early stage. This article offers practical guidance to screen for the main geriatric syndromes, recognize modifiable risk factors and implement measures aimed at preserving intrinsic

Neuroprotective mechanisms of exercise and the importance of fitness for healthy brain ageing.

Ageing is a scientifically fascinating and complex biological occurrence characterised by morphological and functional changes due to accumulated molecular and cellular damage impairing tissue and organ function. Ageing is often accompanied by cognitive decline but is also the biggest known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. Emerging evidence suggests that sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles accelerate brain ageing, while regular physical activity, high cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), or a combination of both, can mitigate cognitive impairment and reduce dem

Rehabilitation delivery models to foster healthy ageing-a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Rehabilitation is essential to foster healthy ageing. Older adults have unique rehabilitation needs due to a higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases, higher susceptibility to infectious diseases, injuries, and mental health conditions. However, there is limited understanding of how rehabilitation is delivered to older adults. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review to describe rehabilitation delivery models used to optimise older adults' functioning/functional ability and foster healthy ageing. METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase (January 2015 to May 2022)

Dysregulation of extracellular potassium distinguishes healthy ageing from neurodegeneration.

Progressive neuronal loss is a hallmark feature distinguishing neurodegenerative diseases from normal ageing. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Extracellular K+ homeostasis is a potential mediator of neuronal injury as K+ elevations increase excitatory activity. The dysregulation of extracellular K+ and potassium channel expressions during neurodegeneration could contribute to this distinction. Here we measured the cortical extracellular K+ concentration ([K+]e) in awake wild-type mice as well as murine models of neurodegeneration using K+-sensitive microelectrodes. Unexpected

Healthy ageing: Herpes zoster infection and the role of zoster vaccination.

Populations are ageing worldwide, with considerable time lived in ill-health, putting upwards pressure on healthcare budgets. Healthy ageing is defined as maintaining functional ability, including the ability to: meet basic needs; learn, grow and make decisions; be mobile; build and maintain relationships; and contribute to society. The risk and impact of infectious diseases increase with age due to immunosenescence. Vaccination can help to prevent disease in older adults, promoting healthy ageing and active lives. Herpes zoster (HZ) occurs when the varicella zoster virus is reactivated due to

Promoting Healthy Ageing in South Africa Through Vaccination of the Elderly.

The World Health Organization estimates that globally, the proportion of people aged ≥60 years will more than double by the year 2050, with the majority of elderly people living in low- and middle-income countries such as South Africa. Population ageing is an impending public health concern, potentially negatively impacting on South Africa's economy and health system if the government does not adequately prepare for this change. Globally, many potential solutions to ensure healthy ageing are being discussed and implemented, including adopting a "life-course" approach to vaccination which inclu
