The expression and function of embryonic myosin heavy chain (eMYH) has not been investigated within the early developing heart. This is despite the knowledge that other structural proteins, such as alpha and beta myosin heavy chains and cardiac alpha actin, play crucial roles in atrial septal development and cardiac function. Most cases of atrial septal defects and cardiomyopathy are not associated with a known causative gene, suggesting that further analysis into candidate genes is required. Expression studies localised eMYH in the developing chick heart. eMYH knockdown was achieved using mor

Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome is a rare chondroectodermal dysplasia. Congenital heart disease is present in more than one-half of cases. The majority are partial atrioventricular septal defects and affect the atrial septum. Although isolated cases of the syndrome are uncommon, an early diagnosis is made in most of the patients because of their cardinal manifestations. The cases of two gypsy brothers with Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome and congenital heart disease (ostium primum atrial septal defect and single atrium), diagnosed during adulthood, are presented.

We report a case of stab wound to the heart resulting in an atrial septal defect and perforation of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve, which we repaired successfully 7 years after the injury. To our knowledge, repair of an atrial septal defect due to penetrating trauma has never before been reported. Investigation of possible valvular heart disease in a patient with a history of chest trauma should be aimed at identifying both intracardiac shunts and valvular abnormalities, so that a complete repair can be performed.

We present the case of a 2.5 year-old child with unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect due to a small left ventricle (LV) (mitral annulus of 10mm and a 0.4 ratio in relation to the tricuspid annulus, LVDD: 17 mm, LV Vd2: 15 ml/m(2) and LV/RV long-axis ratio of 0.71); he had a favorable outcome after biventricular surgical repair. Normal LV development was observed three months after the operation (mitral annulus of 22 mm, with a 0.84 ratio in relation to the tricuspid annulus, and LVDD of 30 mm). Current parameters for utilization of the hypoplastic ventricle are discussed.

The cardiac conduction system was examined in 2 hearts which had repair of atrioventricular septal defect. The first was from a child known to have had a prolonged P-R interval and the second was from a girl who developed complete heart block before submission to surgery. The atrioventricular conduction axis was histologically discontinuous in the first case, but preserved and surrounded by hemorrhage in the second case. This study draws attention to the inherent vulnerability of the cardiac conduction axis which must also be recognized before surgical intervention.

Congenital heart defects (CHD) affect 1 in 100 live births and result from defects in cardiac development. Growth of the early heart tube occurs by the progressive addition of second heart field (SHF) progenitor cells to the cardiac poles. The SHF gives rise to ventricular septal, right ventricular and outflow tract myocardium at the arterial pole, and atrial, including atrial septal myocardium, at the venous pole. SHF deployment creates the template for subsequent cardiac septation and has been implicated in cardiac looping and in orchestrating outflow tract development with neural crest cell

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of transcatheter closure in patients with dextrocardia and isolated atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 10 patients with dextrocardia and atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect from June 2013 to January 2023 and successfully underwent transcatheter closure. Patient data were meticulously collected.
RESULTS: The study cohort comprised 10 patients, with three males, aged between 3 and 38 years. Intraoperative right heart catheterisation revealed the following m

A wide atrial communication is important to maintain hemodynamics in certain forms of congenital and acquired heart defects. In comparison to balloon septostomy or blade septostomy, atrial septal stenting provides a controlled, predictable, and long-lasting atrial communication. It often needs a prior Brockenbrough needle septal puncture to obtain a stable stent position. A stent deployed across a previously dilated and stretched oval foramen or tunnel form of oval foramen carries higher risk of embolization. This review provides technical tips to achieve a safe atrial septal stenting. Even th

Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects with left-to-right shunt induces an abrupt overload of the left ventricle that may cause acute heart failure in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. We report two cases of ostium secundum atrial septal defects associated with left ventricular dysfunction of different etiology. The hemodynamic evaluation of left ventricular function during transient abolition of the shunt with the sizing balloon of the Amplatzer system helped to establish the most correct therapeutic strategy.

Atrial septal defect is a common congenital heart disease. In patients with atrial septal defect, left-to-right shunting increases the right atrial and right ventricular preload. This pathological change affects sinus node automaticity and myocardial depolarization and repolarization, and has the potential to evoke arrhythmogenic substrates. We examined the effect of atrial septal defect on sinus node automaticity and myocardial repolarization by investigating the variability in the repolarization interval, namely the QT variability index (QTVI) and variability ratio (VR). This retrospective s

BACKGROUND: Heart-hand syndromes compose a class of combined congenital cardiac and limb deformities. The proto-typical heart-hand disorder is Holt-Oram syndrome, which is characterized by cardiac septation defects and radial ray limb deformity. We have recently mapped the Holt-Oram syndrome gene defect to the long arm of human chromosome 12 in two families. The role of this disease locus in the pathogenesis of related conditions such as heart-hand syndrome type III (cardiac conduction disease accompanied by skeletal malformations) or familial atrial septal defects is unknown.

BACKGROUND: A persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a relatively frequent systemic venous anomaly associated with congenital heart defects. This anomaly has been explained with the persistence of the left superior cardinal vein. PLSVC usually drains into the right atrium, via coronary sinus, but it joins the left atrium in approximately 8% of the cases either directly in the setting of atrial isomerism, or via an unroofed coronary sinus, or through a coronary sinus type atrial septal defect.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of an adult patient with atria in the situs solitus, PLSVC dra

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) draining to the left atrium (LA) is a rare congenital abnormality that is often asymptomatic and found incidentally on imaging. PLSVC is usually described alongside other congenital defects, such as septal defects, tetralogy of fallot, and aortic coarctation. PLSVC to LA with an atrial septal defect is known as Raghib syndrome, but to our knowledge PLSVC to LA without an atrial septal defect or right superior vena cava has not been described in the literature. Here, we report the presentation of a patient with PLSVC-LA without ASD and propose a classi

The infracardiac variant of total anomalous pulmonary venous return occurs only rarely and is frequently obstructive in nature, thereby presenting in the early days of life [1]. An atrial septal defect is present in most cases and is necessary for survival, but a ventricular septal defect is extremely rare; only a few cases have been reported. Surgery is the only treatment option but carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality.

Atrial appendage aneurysms are extremely rare entities in cardiology practice. There are reports of solitary left and right atrial appendage aneurysms in the literature. A case of biatrial appendages aneurysms is reported here. This is the first report of such an anomaly.

Atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect (VSD), and atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) are among the most common congenital heart lesions, with most children surviving to adulthood. However, the clinical course of these patients is largely unknown, particularly pertaining to inpatient care. The purpose of this study was to assess hospitalizations for septal defects in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) and risk factors associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The 2007 Nationwide Inpatient Sample was used to assess national prevalence of hospitalizations in adults
