To contribute to a better understanding of the morphopathology of atrial septal defects (ASD), we describe and classify topographically a series of hearts obtained from necropsies. We performed an anatomo-embryological correlation to gain insight on the pathogenesis of this type of congenital heart disease. Seventy-one hearts with ASD and twenty-three normal hearts with patent foramen ovale from the collection at the Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia lgnacio Chavez were studied morphologically; segmental sequential analysis was used. The topography of the interatrial septum was determined on t

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart diseases cause significant childhood morbidity and mortality. Several restricted studies have been conducted on the epidemiology in Nigeria. No truly nationwide data on patterns of congenital heart disease exists.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the patterns of congenital heart disease in children in Nigeria and examine trends in the occurrence of individual defects across 5 decades.
METHOD: We searched PubMed database, Google scholar, TRIP database, World Health Organisation libraries and reference lists of selected articles for studies on patterns of congenital heart

A 1-month-old male infant with a double outlet right ventricle complicated by left ventricular outflow tract obstruction due to a very small ventricular septal defect is described. The atrial septum was intact, but mitral stenosis was present. The characteristic finding in this patient was that the inherently small ventricular septal defect was further narrowed by abnormal adherence of the anterior mitral leaflet to the left ventricular septal surface below the defect. Intracardiac anatomical features other than the adherent mitral valve could be evaluated accurately by two-dimensional echocar

BACKGROUND: Discussions continue as to whether ventricular septal defects are best categorized according to their right ventricular geography or their borders. This is especially true when considering the perimembranous defect. Our aim, therefore, was to establish the phenotypic feature of the perimembranous defect, and to establish the ease of distinguishing its geographical variants.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed unrepaired isolated perimembranous ventricular defects from six historic archives, subcategorizing them using the ICD-11 coding system. We identified 365 defects, of which 94 (2

We present a series of 4 patients in whom a ventricular septal defect (VSD) was closed with an Amplatzer muscular VSD device during cardiac catheterization. In one patient with type I truncus arteriosus and subarterial VSD, closure of a wide apical defect was done to allow further surgical correction while avoiding left ventricular ventriculotomy. The second patient had congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries with complete A-V block and a pacemaker implanted from birth. Our intention was unload the systemic anatomical right ventricle. The third patient had had 3 heart surger

The article is devoted to the detection of ECG criteria characteristic of the open oblique atrioventricular canal which makes it possible to make the differential diagnosis not only between individual forms of the open oblique atrioventricular canal but also to differentiate it from other forms of congenital heart disease.

"Heart-hand" syndrome is a broad category of diseases. The most common form is Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) that occurs in approximately 1:100 000 live births. It is characterized by upper limb defects (carpal bone defects, triphalangeal thumbs, hypoplasia or absence of the thumb and the radial ray) and cardiac septal defects (atrial septal defects or ventricular septal defects). There are three main types of "heart-hand" syndromes. "Heart-hand" syndrome type I--HOS is characterised by atrial septal defect and thumb anomaly, type II (Tabatznik syndrome) by short distal phalanx of the thumb, upper

We report a rare case of a neonate with interrupted aortic arch, aortopulmonary window and complete atrioventricular septal defect. To the best of our knowledge, this unusual triad has not been previously described. The main question of the surgical strategy for CAVSD, in setting of associated defects, is to classify the CAVSD as balanced or unbalanced.

A 2-month-old male infant with incomplete atrioventricular septal defect associated with a hypoplastic left ventricle and left atrioventricular valve stenosis successfully underwent biventricular repair. Echocardiography showed marked dilatation in the right ventricle and a diminutive left ventricle. However, the left ventricular chamber occupied the apex. Left atrioventricular valve stenosis was due to a solitary papillary muscle. Cardiac catheterization showed pulmonary/systemic flow ratio of 3.61, left ventricular end-diastolic volume of 63% of normal, and right ventricular end-diastolic vo

BACKGROUND: Over the course of time, new developments associated with the embryogenesis of the murine heart have served to clarify the developmental processes observed in the human heart. This evidence allows for the creation of a developmental framework for many congenital cardiac defects.
AIMS: We aim to solidify the framework related to the categorization of both solitary and multiple ventricular septal defects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mice having genetic perturbation of the Furin enzyme have demonstrated perimembranous and juxta-arterial ventricular septal defects, permitting the inferenc

A 54-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with a prolonged dypsnea, orthopnoea, and chest pain that has lasted for almost 2 weeks. Physical examination revealed symptoms of heart failure. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a ventricular septal defect located at the apical segment of the interventricular septum, mild mitral regurgitation, and hypokinesia of the apex of the left ventricle. Coronary angiography showed a critical proximal lesion of the left anterior descending artery. He was diagnosed with postmyocardial infarction ventricular septal defect. Our patient underwent minima

The aim of our study was to elucidate the clinical and morphologic features of those perimembranous ventricular septal defects which extend between the ventricular outlets, particularly when found in association with anterior deviation of the muscular outlet septum and overriding of the aorta--the so called Eisenmenger ventricular septal defect. From 1990 through 1998, we have undertaken surgical correction in 203 patients with perimembranous ventricular septal defect. Of these, 15 patients had the Eisenmenger ventricular septal defect. We conducted retrospective analyses of the clinical recor

Trifoliate left atrioventricular (AV) valve with common atrioventricular junction is considered part of the spectrum of atrioventricular septal defect. This valve morphology is typically associated with defects in the AV septum resulting in communication at the atrial or ventricular level, but has also been described as an isolated defect in the setting of a common AV junction without AV septal defect. Trifoliate left AV valve exhibits a line of apposition between the bridging leaflets that is directed toward the inlet interventricular septum, distinguishing it from isolated mitral valve cleft
