Recent Advancement on Peptide-Based Fluorescent/Colorimetric Sensors for Metal Ion Detection.

Modernization and technology development lead to an increase in the contamination of toxic metal ions into the direct environment. Unlike the other pollutants, metal ions cannot be degraded by chemical or biological ways, and are hard to abolish. To check and regulate metal ion contamination, numerous advancements have been wittnessed to develop the materials that can sense particular metal ion selectively with synchronized variation in their optical behavior. In this realm, peptide serves as a toolbox with exceptional advantages over other chemical-based metal sensors owing to specific proper

Differential interactions of essential and toxic metal ions with biologically relevant phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylserine membranes.

Metal pollutants are a growing concern due to increased use in mining and other industrial processes. Moreover, the use of metals in daily life is becoming increasingly prevalent. Metals such as manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni) are toxic in high amounts whereas lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are acutely toxic at low µM concentrations. These metals are associated with system dysfunction in humans including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other cellular process'. One known but lesser studied target of these metals are lipids that are key

Acidification and recovery of phosphorus from digested and non-digested sludge.

Acidification was used to dissolve phosphorus from digested and non-digested sludge from five wastewater treatment plants in order to make phosphorus accessible for subsequent recovery. More phosphorus was dissolved from digested sludge (up to 80%), with respect to non-digested sludge (∼25%) and the highest release was observed at pH 2. The acid consumption for digested sludge was higher than for non-digested sludge due to the presence of the bicarbonate buffer system, thus CO2 stripping increased the acid consumption. In all the experiments, the sludge was exposed to acid for 1 h. For the fiv

Attapulgite/oyster shell composite reduces cadmium and lead bioavailability in acidic agricultural soils through synergistic adsorption and pH regulation.

Heavy metal contamination in acidified agricultural soils poses significant environmental and health risks. This study presents the development of a cost-effective dual-functional adsorbent, the attapulgite-oyster shell (ATP-OS) composite, engineered for the simultaneous removal of co-contaminated Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. The ATP-OS composite was synthesized through thermal treatment at 700 °C, facilitating a synergistic interaction between attapulgite (ATP) and oyster shell (OS) powders. Characterization revealed enhanced dispersibility, increased active site density, and an expanded specific

Study on Removal Mechanism for Copper Cyanide Complex Ions in Water: Ion Species Differences and Evolution Process.

A large amount of cyanide-containing wastewater is discharged during electrode material synthesis. Among them, cyanides will form metal-cyanide complex ions which possess high stability, making it challenging to separate them from these wastewaters. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the complexation mechanism of cyanide ions and heavy metal ions from wastewater in order to obtain a deep insight into the process of cyanide removal. This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the complexation mechanism of metal-cyanide complex ions formed by the interaction

Use of selenium to detect mercury in water and cells: an enhancement of the sensitivity and specificity of a seleno fluorescent probe.

Seleno fluorescent probe: An organoselenium fluorescent probe (FSe-1) for mercury was designed based on the irreversible deselenation mechanism. FSe-1 exhibits an ultrahigh selectivity and sensitivity for Hg(2+) detection only for reactive selenium atom sites, due the strong affinity between Se and Hg. Furthermore, the new probe has been successfully used for imaging mercury ions in RAW 264.7 cells (a mouse macrophage cell line; see figure).Inspired by the antitoxic function of selenium towards heavy-metal ions, we designed an organoselenium fluorescent probe (FSe-1) for mercury. The reaction

Modifications of Epitaxial Graphene on SiC for the Electrochemical Detection and Identification of Heavy Metal Salts in Seawater.

The electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions is reported using an inexpensive portable in-house built potentiostat and epitaxial graphene. Monolayer, hydrogen-intercalated quasi-freestanding bilayer, and multilayer epitaxial graphene were each tested as working electrodes before and after modification with an oxygen plasma etch to introduce oxygen chemical groups to the surface. The graphene samples were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and van der Pauw Hall measurements. Dose-response curves in seawater were evaluated with

Energy-saving preparation of a bioflocculant under high-salt condition by using strain Bacillus sp. and the interaction mechanism towards heavy metals.

A highly efficient bioflocculant, i.e., Na-Bsp was successfully prepared by using a tolerant strain-Bacillus sp. under high-salt condition without sterilization. Salt-containing medium was not infected by other strains throughout the whole incubation period in 168 h. The as-prepared Na-Bsp was found to be cation-dependent, exhibiting high flocculant efficiency (FE) i.e., 97.69 ± 0.61%, towards kaolin particles by aid of Fe3+. High FE values were well maintained under a wide pH range and/or boiled water treatment, likely because of the main constituent of polysaccharide. The presence of hydroxy

The leaching mechanism of heavy metals (Ni, Cd, As) in a gasification slag during acidification.

The gasification slag by acidification can leach abundant heavy metals. In this paper, the fate of heavy metals (Ni, Cd, and As) in the raw slag and the acidified slag that treated by HAc and HCl was systematically investigated combined with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the content of Ni and Cd is reduced with an increasing acid concentration and meets the regulatory standards by 7 M HAc and 3 M HCl, respectively. Most of Ni combined with gehlenite is released as gehlenite dissolves during acid treatment, whereas Cd in combination with gehlenite and iron

Water-Dispersible Activatable Nanoprobe for Detecting Cadmium-Ion-Induced Oxidative Stress in Edible Crops via Near-Infrared Second-Window Fluorescence Imaging.

Edible crops are important in terms of food security and sustainable agriculture. Heavy-metal-ion contamination of water/soil has deleterious impacts on the growth of edible crops. Among the heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) is toxic to plants, people, and animals, as it is widely used in industry; it has become the most important metal ion in the soil/water pollution. Once the toxic Cd ion enters edible crops via the water/soil in which the crops grow, it will induce oxidative stress (overproduction of reactive oxygen species with H2O2 being the most abundant) in the crops, and strong oxidative stre

Effect of high-LET Fe-ion beam irradiation on mutation induction in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Heavy-ion beams are powerful mutagens. They cause a broad spectrum of mutation phenotypes with high efficiency even at low irradiation doses and short irradiation times. These mutagenic effects are due to dense ionisation in a localised region along the ion particle path. Linear energy transfer (LET; keV·μm(-1)), which represents the degree of locally deposited energy, is an important parameter in heavy-ion mutagenesis. For high LET radiation above 290 keV∙μm(-1), however, neither the mutation frequency nor the molecular nature of the mutations has been fully characterised. In this study, we i

Preparation of heavy-atom derivatives using site-directed mutagenesis. Introduction of cysteine residues into gamma delta resolvase.

The ability to determine protein structures by X-ray crystallography is often thwarted by the difficulty of finding isomorphous heavy-atom derivatives. The crystal structure of the site-specific recombinase, resolvase, has been difficult to determine for this reason. We have overcome this problem by introducing 13 single cysteine substitutions into the resolvase catalytic domain using oligonucleotide mutagenesis. The mutant proteins were screened for their ability to crystallize into the orthorhombic form and bind mercury ions isomorphously. Two mutant proteins provided excellent heavy-atom de

Observation of partonic flow in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions.

Quantum Chromodynamics predicts a phase transition from hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at high temperatures and energy densities, where quarks and gluons (partons) are no longer confined within hadrons. The QGP forms in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Anisotropic flow coefficients, quantifying the azimuthal expansion of produced matter, probe QGP properties. Flow measurements in high-energy heavy-ion collisions show a distinctive grouping of anisotropic flow for baryons and mesons at intermediate transverse momentum - a feature associated with flow imparted at the quark le

Reactive nitrogen species-driven oxidative and nitrative damage underlying cadmium/mercury co-exposure: A multimodal fluorescent visualization study.

Heavy metal contamination severely threatens ecological environment and human health. Few studies have established an integrated mechanistic framework linking heavy metal co-exposure, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) burst, and progressive cellular injury, especially for multi-metal combined pollution that better reflects real environmental scenarios. As downstream substance of nitric oxide (NO) and representative RNS, peroxynitrite (ONOO-) possess stronger oxidation/nitration capacity compared with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The oxidative/nitrifying stress ignited by RNS outburst under cadmium

Thiazole-Formulated Azomethine Compound for Three-Way Detection of Mercury Ions in Aqueous Media and Application in Living Cells.

Heavy metal ions are extremely poisonous and cause long-term harm to living organisms. Among these ions, mercury is the most toxic metal and has no notorious purpose in the human body. In this regard, an elegant azomethine thiazole compound AM1 was synthesized, and it was found to be highly sensitive to three-way detection of mercury ions with detection limits of 0.1126 × 10-9 M (FL) and 0.64 × 10-6 M (UV-vis). AM1 highlighted the capability to detect mercury ions through the colorimetric method, the fluorometric method, and via the naked eye in three-way detection. In addition, the structure

Lead contamination fixation through CO2-based biomineralization.

Ureolytic microbially-induced carbonate precipitation and ureolytic enzymatically-induced carbonate precipitation have been proposed in recent years as emerging environmentally friendly techniques for heavy metal fixation. However, they rely on the hydrolysis of urea for generating carbonate ions needed to immobilize heavy metal cations. In this study, for the first time, a novel alternative is proposed, and its feasibility for lead removal in aqueous solutions is examined. The method relies on direct CO2 biocementation. Where contaminated solutions are exposed to CO2, and CO2 hydration and fo

Analyses of heavy metals in mineral trioxide aggregate and Portland cement.

INTRODUCTION: Portland cement is used in the construction industry as a binder in concrete. It is manufactured from chalk, limestone, and clay, which are clinkered at very high temperatures and ground with gypsum to form Portland cement. The raw materials and the manufacturing process can result in the inclusion of heavy metals in Portland cement. Portland cement with a four to one addition of bismuth oxide is marketed as mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), which is used mainly as a dental material. Heavy metal inclusion can be of concern because MTA is in contact with hard and soft tissues. ME

Interaction of beta-amyloid(1-40) peptide with pairs of metal ions: An electrospray ion trap mass spectrometric model study.

The stoichiometries and the affinity toward simple and paired metal ions of synthetic amyloid-beta(1-40) peptide (Abeta1-40) were investigated by electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), circular dichroism (CD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results lead to the working hypothesis that pH-dependent metal binding to Abeta1-40 may induce conformational changes, which affect the affinity toward other metals. A significant copper and zinc binding to Abeta1-40 peptide at pH 5.5 was found, whereas nickel ions commonly bind to each molecule of beta-amyloid peptide. Some complexes of

Smartphone-aided paper imprinted aptasensor for the ultrasensitive detection of lead in aquatic products.

A fluorescent biosensor was synthesized for sensitive detection of lead ions by integrating aptamer with ion imprinted polymer. ZnSe@ZnS quantum dots served as the fluorescence indicator and aptamers served as recognition elements. Specific and rapid detection of lead ions was achieved through imprinting cavities containing aptamers with specific conformations. The resulting biosensor, after optimization via the multi-factor response surface methodology, can detect lead with a detection limit as low as 0.56 nmol L-1 (the detection limit in aquatic products is 47.73 μg/kg). Furthermore, a paper

Construction of Stable 2D Cationic Breathing Ni-MOF for Cr(VI) Trapping and Electrochemical Sensing.

Pollution of surface water by heavy metal hexavalent chromium ions poses a serious threat to human health; herein, a two-dimensional (2D) cationic breathing Ni-MOF with free nitrate ions between the layers was designed and synthesized according to the characteristics of hexavalent chromium ions, {[Ni(L)2](NO3)2·5H2O}n (L = 1,3,5-tris[4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl]benzene). The flexible layer spacing of the 2D breathing Ni-MOF allows the exchange of NO3- by CrO42- without destroying the original structure. Electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between CrO42- and Ni-MOF facilitate its exchan
