Helicobacter pylori infection and eradication in paediatric patients.

Helicobacter pylori is now recognised to be typically acquired during childhood. Studies also indicate that the infection is frequently lost in childhood; however, it is still unclear whether this is related to the use of antibacterials, the natural history of the infection, or both. H. pylori colonises gastric mucosa and is causally related to chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease in both children and adults. Successful eradication of H. pylori has resulted in the healing of duodenal ulcers and the lowering of the ulcer relapse rate in children. Therapy to cure the infection should be st

Helicobacter pylori infection in sickle cell disease.

Abdominal pain is a common presenting symptom in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). One case of Helicobacter pylori gastritis has been reported in a child with sickle cell anemia. H. pylori-induced peptic ulcer disease (PUD) has not previously been reported in adults with SCD. We report eight cases of H. pylori infection in adult sickle cell patients presenting with acute or recurrent abdominal pain and/or gastrointestinal bleeding. In all cases, H. pylori serology (IgG) was positive, and three patients had gastric or duodenal ulcer by endoscopic examination. All patients responded to H. p

Association of Helicobacter pylori infection with gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori has generated public health interest since its identification in 1983. Past studies have suggested that the bacterium plays a role in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer. More recent studies support the conclusion that the association of H. pylori with gastric cancer is causal. The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence supporting the association of H. pylori with gastric cancer. METHODS: We performed a critical review of the relevant literature published in the English language on H. pylori and gastric cancer using MEDLINE, Index Medicus fo

Iron deficiency anaemia and Helicobacter pylori infection.

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common form of anaemia world-wide. IDA is the simple result of an imbalance between iron loss and absorption. Gastric function with hydrochloric and ascorbic acid is essential for iron absorption. Some strains of Helicobacter pylori are able to acquire iron, competing with the host. A large percentage of patients with atrophic body gastritis (ABG) develop IDA and 61% of them are H. pylori positive. Recent evidence suggests that H. pylori infection could cause IDA in the absence of peptic ulcer or other upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding lesions

Helicobacter pylori infection in dyspeptic cirrhotic patients.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To date, few studies have focused on the role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in cirrhotic patients with gastroduodenal disease and reported results are conflicting. The aim of this study was to assess the H. pylori infection rate in dyspeptic cirrhotic patients with or without gastroduodenal lesions at endoscopy. METHODOLOGY: In a prospective study, 226 consecutive dyspeptic cirrhotic patients were enrolled in the study upon assessment of H. pylori infection. Two-hundred dyspeptic non-cirrhotic patients were also included as controls. The presence of H. pylori was detecte

Relationship of Helicobacter pylori infection with gastrointestinal motility.

The interest of gastroenterologists in the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and gastrointestinal motility emerges from the observation that Helicobacter pylori may be involved in the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia and that a relatively large percentage of patients with dyspepsia may show impaired gastrointestinal motility. A number of studies have been published on the interaction between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastrointestinal motility with controversial results, and, therefore, there are no definite conclusions, as yet, as to whether Helicobacter pylori is able, at a

Helicobacter pylori infection and host cell responses.

It is well known that Helicobacter pylori is able to colonize the gastric mucosa, causing a chronic and persistent infection with complications, such as peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. This review places emphasis on some epidemiological aspects of Helicobacter pylori infection and its mode of transmission. At the same time, invasive and non-invasive methods of diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection are illustrated. More space is devoted to the host response following invasion of the stomach. In this respect, the role played by different growth factors and polyamines in the course of Helic

[Rodent models of Helicobacter pylori infection and their utility].

Small animal models for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection have been widely examined and developed. Recently, the novel laboratory strain (the Sydney strain) of H. pylori, having a high ability to colonize the gastric mucosa of normal mice, was established. In the mice infected with the Sydney strain, chronic gastritis slowly develops, progressing to severe atrophy. The Sydney strain may become the standard one for experimental research. On the other hand, mice expressing Leb antigen were genetically produced. H. pylori well colonizes the gastric mucosa of the transgenic mice, but the g

Natural course of Helicobacter pylori gastric infection.

Helicobacter pylori acquisition induces chronic gastritis that affects antrum, corpus or both. In approximately half of the cases, Helicobacter pylori gastritis slowly (years, decades) develops to atrophic gastritis, thereby resulting in severe abnormalities in the function of the stomach. In humans, the appearance of intestinal metaplasia associates with atrophic gastritis (loss of normal antral and/or oxyntic glands), and intestinal metaplasia linearly increases in grade and extent with increasing age and progression of atrophy. Several mechanisms may play in role in the development of atrop

[Gastroesophageal reflux combined with Helicobacter pylori infection].

AIM: Investigation of the role of Helicobacter pylori infection of the low esophagus in patients with duodenal ulcer (DU). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endoscopic examination was performed in 40 DU patients. All the biopsies were examined for Helicobacter pylori and degree of relevant contamination. RESULTS: Helicobacter pylori was present in all the patients' antral stomachs. It contaminated the low part of the esophagus in 17 of 40 patients. Endoscopic changes were more severe in those patients who had the infection both in the stomach and in the esophagus. CONCLUSION: The presence of Helicobac

Chemokines in the gastric mucosa in Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: Although chemokines have been suggested to play an important role in Helicobacter pylori associated gastritis, few studies have investigated the role of chemokines other than interleukin 8 (IL-8) in gastric mucosa. AIMS: To investigate the expression and production patterns of various chemokines using gastric biopsy specimens. METHODS: In 192 patients, expression patterns of C-X-C chemokines (IL-8 and growth regulated alpha (GRO alpha)) and C-C chemokines (regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and presumably secreted (RANTES), monocyte chemotactic and activating factor

Gastric MALT-lymphoma and Helicobacter pylori infection.

The presence of lymphoid tissue in the gastric mucosa is virtually pathognomonic of Helicobacter pylori infection. This lymphoid tissue has mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) characteristics suggesting that H. pylori infection may represent a stimulus for the growth of gastric MALT lymphoma. H. pylori can be detected in more than 90% of patients with low-grade gastric MALT lymphoma supporting the aetiological role of the organism. The strongest evidence for the significance of H. pylori in the pathogenesis of low aetological-grade gastric MALT lymphoma is provided by clinical studies sho

Helicobacter pylori infection--current status in Singapore.

Helicobacter pylori infection is a common infection in Singapore affecting about 31% of the population. The seroprevalence of H. pylori infection increases with age from 3% in children below 5 years to 71% in adults above 65 years. Amongst the races, Chinese and Indians had similar rates of seropositivity (34.3% and 33.6%) while in Malays it was significantly lower (13.7%; P < 0.05). H. pylori infection is associated with peptic ulcer disease (both duodenal and gastric ulcer) as well as gastric cancer [adenocarcinoma, early gastric cancer and mucosa-associated lymphoma of T cell type (MALT) ly
