The behavior of Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and of their predator Cycloneda sanguinea (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in cotton-cowpea intercropping systems.

The intercropping is an important cultural practice commonly used in pest management. It is based on the principle that increased plant diversity in the agro-ecosystem can lead to reductions of pest populations in the crop. The current study aimed to assess the impact the colored fiber cotton-cowpea intercropped systems on Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora and on their predator Cycloneda sanguinea and the losses and the dispersion behavior of these aphids and their predator in these cropping systems. The experiment had a randomized block experimental design with two bioassays and four treatm

Evaluation of Bioinsecticides for Management of Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and the Effect on the Whitefly Predator Delphastus catalinae (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Organic Squash.

Organic zucchini squash is a high-value vegetable crop in Florida and potential exists to expand its production throughout the state. A lack of knowledge on the effectiveness of organic products and their integration with natural enemies is an important constraint to the regulation of pest populations in organic squash production in Florida. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of insecticides labeled for organic production that can be used for management of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, on organically grown squash; and to determine the effects of the most efficient

Phenology of Asian Citrus Psyllid (Hemiptera: Liviidae), With Special Reference to Biological Control by Tamarixia radiata , in the Residential Landscape of Southern California.

Since its discovery in 2008, the pestiferous Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), has become widely established in residential citrus trees throughout southern California. In 2011, Tamarixia radiata (Waterston) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a host-specific parasitoid of D. citri , sourced from Punjab Pakistan, was introduced into California as part of a classical biological program aimed at suppressing D. citri populations in urban areas. Despite these release efforts, little is known about the population dynamics of D. citri in urban citrus or the efficacy of T.…

Enhanced Acquisition Rates of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' by the Asian Citrus Psyllid (Hemiptera: Liviidae) in the Presence of Vegetative Flush Growth in Citrus.

The Asian citrus psyllid preferentially feeds and exclusively reproduces on young, newly emerged flush shoots of citrus. Asian citrus psyllid nymphs feed and complete their life stages on these flush shoots. Recent studies conducted under greenhouse conditions have shown that the transmission rates of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas), the putative causal agent of huanglongbing disease of citrus, are enhanced when flush shoots are present. However, it is unclear if CLas acquisition by migrant adult Asian citrus psyllids is similarly enhanced. To address this knowledge gap, cohorts of

The effects of thermal acclimation on lethal temperatures and critical thermal limits in the green vegetable bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

According to geographical distribution, Nezara viridula (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) can be found across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions and this pattern is assumed to reflect differences in thermal adaptation, particularly in cold tolerance. Here the lethal temperature (LT) and critical thermal limits (CTL) (thermal tolerance) are examined for N. viridula. The upper LT for N. viridula at two contrasting climate locations (Breeza and Grafton, New South Wales, Australia) was 40.3°C with 20% survival under the stress of high temperature. The lower LT did not differ between these two

Population distribution and density of Pentalonia nigronervosa (Hemiptera: Aphididae) within banana mats: influence of plant age and height on sampling and management.

The banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is the most economically important pest of banana (Musa spp.) fields in Hawaii. Recently, there has been a concerted effort in Hawaii to learn more about the biology and ecology of this pest. However, limited work has been directed at determining the distribution of P. nigronervosa in banana fields and developing an integrated pest management plan. Therefore, a survey was conducted in banana fields throughout the Hawaiian Islands to determine the distribution and density of P. nigronervosa within banana mats from plants…

Morphological and Molecular Identification of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1854) (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) Specimen Collected in Close Proximity to Humans in Southern Italy.

The Belostomatidae is a family of aquatic Heteropteran insects that normally inhabit swamps of tropical, subtropical and temperate regions where they naturally feed on a large range of prey, mainly fish, amphibians and reptiles. However, these arthropods can occasionally bite humans when provoked, causing pain. The only species of giant water bug known to be found in Europe is Lethocerus (L.) patruelis. We reported the finding of a specimen of female L. patruelis in Southern Italy. The arthropod was collected by a tourist on his body while he lying down on a beach close to a nature reserve. To

Variable organization of repeats and hidden diversity of XY sex chromosomes in Pentatomidae true Bugs (Hemiptera) revealed through comparative genomic hybridization.

Sex chromosomes have independently evolved in various species, displaying unique evolutionary patterns, including differentiation, degeneration, and repetitive DNA accumulation. Pentatomidae hemipterans are characterized by a highly conserved diploid number of 2n = 14 with a XX/XY sex chromosome system, i.e. 2n = 14, 12 A + XY. Thus, it represents an interesting group for investigating the reorganization of repeats in conserved karyotypes, i.e. the absence of large chromosomal rearrangements. Using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) with male and female genomic DNAs (gDNA), this study exa…

The dynamic of Trypanosoma cruzi transmissibility in field-caught Mepraia spinolai (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) of contrasting seasons: A developmental stage-dependent study.

A competent vector can harbor a pathogen and infect a high number of hosts. Scarce information is available on how triatomine vectors accomplish this task in nature, particularly without knowing the number of parasites they excrete. We study the dynamics of Trypanosoma cruzi transmissibility in the triatomine Mepraia spinolai collected in summer (December 2018) and winter (July 2019) of an austral endemic area. The insects received two feedings in the laboratory, the day after arrival and 45 days after the first feeding. Excreta samples were collected, DNA was extracted, and parasite loads wer

Quinclorac-resistant Echinochloa spp. promoted growth and reproduction of Laodelphax striatellus (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) probably by providing more nutrients and stable environment.

Rice is an important agricultural crop that faces serious challenges from pathogens, pests, and weeds during growth stages. Meanwhile, these organisms would interact with each other to increase the level of destruction. The previous studies showed that barnyard grass (Echinochloa spp) could be used as a temporary host to increase infestation of small brown planthopper (SBPH, Laodelphax striatellus), which is one of the main polyphagous pests. Herbicides are widely used to control weeds that induce resistance development. However, little is known about the effects of increased weed resistance o

Blood meal sources of wild and domestic Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in Bolivia: connectivity between cycles of transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a major public health problem in Latin America. Its etiologic agent, Trypanosoma cruzi, is mainly transmitted through the contaminated faeces of blood-sucking insects called triatomines. Triatoma infestans is the main vector in various countries in South America and recently, several foci of wild populations of this species have been described in Bolivia and other countries. These wild populations are suspected of affecting the success of insecticide control campaigns being carried out in South America. To assess the risk that these T. infestans populations pose t

Axenic cultivation of a pathogenic Phytomonas species isolated from tomato fruit, and from its phytophagic insect vector, Phthia picta (Hemiptera: Coreidae).

Axenic cultures of Phytomonas sp. were obtained from naturally infected tomatoes and from Phthia picta, a predator of tomato plants, by using a biphasic medium with Roitman's complex medium overlaying rabbit blood-agar slants. Light and electron microscopy of both isolates showed a similarity of morphological characteristics among the flagellates in fresh material or after cultivation. Other properties, including their agglutinability with the haemolymph of Phthia picta, suggest that these isolates are virtually identical.

The biostimulants and NPK fertilizer affect the physiological and biochemical responses of cucumber plants and the ecological fitness parameters of Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Application of fertilizers can be a feasible strategy for enhancing plant defenses. This study was conducted to explore the impacts of biostimulants, including fulvic acid (FA) and Ascophyllum nodosum L. extract (AnE), along with NPK fertilizer and their combinations (FA + AnE, FA + NPK, AnE + NPK, and FA + AnE + NPK) on the physiological and biochemical traits of cucumber plants in uninfested and aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover)-infested conditions. Furthermore, the subsequent effects of these treatments on fitness parameters of A. gossypii were investigated. The results revealed that plants tre

Effect of mixed infection with Trypanosoma cruzi and the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae on survival, parasitemia, and immune response in Triatoma pallidipennis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are promising tools for controlling vectors of Chagas disease, yet the immunological effects of simultaneous infection with Trypanosoma cruzi and EPF remain largely unknown. We investigated how single infections with T. cruzi (Tc) or Metarhizium anisopliae (Ma), and coinfection (Tc+Ma), affect survival, parasitemia, and immune gene expression in Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål, 1872). Survival of T. pallidipennis differed significantly among treatments, insects only infected with Ma causing the greatest mortality. Parasitemia decreased notably in coinfected insects, s

Analysis of the Evolutionary Relationship between Species of the New Triatoma pseudomaculata Subcomplex (Hemiptera, Triatominae) and Proposal for the Creation of the Triatoma costalimai Subcomplex.

Triatomines are insects of great importance for public health, as they are vectors of protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. The genus Triatoma is the most representative in number of species and one of the most important from an epidemiological point of view. The Triatoma pseudomaculata subcomplex (composed of the species Triatoma arthurneivai, T. pseudomaculata, and T. wygodzinskyi [from the old subcomplex Triatoma maculata] and Triatoma baratai, Triatoma costalimai, Triatoma deaneorum, Triatoma jatai, and Triatoma williami [from the old Triatoma matogrossensis

First report of aberrant sperm in Edessinae and analysis of the male reproductive system of Edessa rufomarginata (De Geer, 1773) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

Edessinae is one of the ten subfamilies of Pentatomidae, and it is further divided into seven genera. Among these, Edessa Fabricius, 1803 is the most diverse genus, boasting around 300 species recognized for their ecological and economic significance worldwide. The inclusion of various pentatomids in the Edessa genus has led to mistakes in its taxonomy due to common morphological features and misidentifications. An alternative to avoid mistakes is to use diverse datasets to characterize and classify insects, such as the male reproductive system and sperm morphology, for their variability and c

New evidence for the presence of the telomere motif (TTAGG) n in the family Reduviidae and its absence in the families Nabidae and Miridae (Hemiptera, Cimicomorpha).

Male karyotype and meiosis in four true bug species belonging to the families Reduviidae, Nabidae, and Miridae (Cimicomorpha) were studied for the first time using Giemsa staining and FISH with 18S ribosomal DNA and telomeric (TTAGG)n probes. We found that Rhynocoris punctiventris (Herrich-Schäffer, 1846) and R. iracundus (Poda, 1761) (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae) had 2n = 28 (24 + X1X2X3Y), whereas Nabis sareptanus Dohrn, 1862 (Nabidae) and Horistus orientalis (Gmelin, 1790) (Miridae) had 2n = 34 (32 + XY) and 2n = 32 (30 + XY), respectively. Characterization of EPG waveforms for the tea green leafhopper, Empoasca vitis Göthe (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), on tea plants and their correlation with stylet activities.

The stylet probing activities of the tea green leafhopper Empoasca vitis Gothe (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) were studied using the DC electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique. Seven different EPG waveforms (i.e., Np, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5 and E6) were distinguished and characterized on susceptible tea leaves. In addition, four of them (i.e., Np, E1, E2, E3), together accounting for 97.08% of the total recording time, were behaviorally correlated with probing and non-probing activities using artificial diet observation with high-magnification video recording. At the start of stylet probing, wavef…

From soil to target: Investigating the role of native entomopathogenic fungi as biocontrol agents against Scaphoideus titanus ball (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in grapevines.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are promising biological control agents for the integrated pest management of Scaphoideus titanus Ball, the principal vector of Flavescence dorée phytoplasma in European vineyards. This study assessed the diversity, abundance, pathogenicity, and endophytic colonization ability of native EPF isolated from vineyard, woodland, and fallow field soils in the Piedmont Region (northwestern Italy). A total of 151 EPF isolates were recovered using selective media plating and the Galleria bait method and identified by ITS sequencing. Of the 14 species identified, eight belon
