OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of variant hemoglobins in different health regions.
METHODS: A descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach based on secondary data in the internal records of the neonatal screening service - Laboratório Central de Saúde Pública do Estado do Piauí (PI, Brazil). The variables related to sex, ethnicity and positive diagnosis for variant hemoglobins were analyzed, with further population distribution of hemoglobinopathies among the macroregions of the state.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between perioperative morbidity and prostate size in patients with benign prostatic obstruction treated with thulium:YAG vapoenucleation of the prostate (ThuVEP).

Sickle hemoglobin (Hb S;betaGlu 6 Val) is due to an A>T transversion in codon 6 of the beta-globin gene. Other variant hemoglobins mimic Hb A, S, or C on newborn screening and clinical laboratory diagnostic tools, thus making their correct identification potentially difficult. Sickling disorders can result in individuals who are compound heterozygous for beta-globin mutations (e.g., Hb SC, HbSO(Arab)). The authors report a second case of HbS/Québec-CHORI, a severe compound heterozygous sickling disorder and their experience managing this patient with hydroxyurea.

METHODS: The study was conducted with a sample of 301 children aged six to 30 months attending public daycare centers in the city of Recife, Northeast Brazil, in 2004.
