Recent advances in medical hemostatic materials: Mechanisms, evaluation, and clinical perspectives.

Uncontrolled hemorrhage remains a major cause of preventable death in trauma and surgery, yet the performance of hemostatic materials varies markedly with wound geometry, blood flow, coagulation status, and tissue sensitivity. This review critically examines natural polymer-based, synthetic polymer-based, inorganic, and composite hemostats by linking material structure to six principal mechanisms: fluid absorption and surface adsorption, coagulation activation, bioactive-factor delivery, photothermal assistance, adhesive sealing, and microstructural regulation. Beyond cataloging materials, we

MXene-enhanced nanocellulose-based hemostatic sponge with antibacterial and pro-healing.

Synchronously achieving rapid hemostasis and sustained healing remains a central challenge in clinical hemostatic materials. Herein, a multifunctional nanocellulose-based hemostatic sponge (DMTC) was fabricated by using aldehyde-functionalized nanocellulose grafted with madecassoside as the matrix, incorporating MXene immobilized copper nanoparticles. The synergistic interaction between them endowed the sponge with exceptional sustained-release capability, achieving cumulative release rates of 88.8% (MA) and 5.4% (CuNPs) over 7 days, respectively. Furthermore, the inorganic-organic interfacial

Hemostatic Supplies and Instruments Do Not Appear to Improve Outcomes of Robotic Prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: As the medical field strives towards improved value-based care, identifying cost drivers that do not improve outcomes is critical. Robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) is a common, costly urologic procedure with variable intraoperative supply utilization. We evaluated whether use of high-cost hemostatic agents and instruments improves perioperative outcomes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 4,573 patients undergoing RALP (2018-2025). Supply costs were categorized as fixed or variable. Hemostatic agents and instruments were identified as major variable

Revisiting the Concept of DIC: A Phenotype-guided Framework for Modern Hemostatic Medicine.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) has long been described as a catastrophic systemic activation of coagulation with suppressed anticoagulant and fibrinolytic pathways, culminating in macro- and microvascular thrombosis, hypoperfusion, and multiple organ dysfunction. It may arise from acute inflammatory, traumatic, or infectious diseases, where consumption of fibrinogen, platelets, and coagulation factors, together with dysregulated fibrinolysis, lead to bleeding and poor outcomes. Contemporary evidence demonstrates that DIC is not a single or uniform pathological entity, but rather

Residual hemostatic material (Surgicel) mimicking endometriosis: a case report of gossypiboma.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gossypiboma, the unintentional retention of surgical materials, is a rare but significant postoperative complication. While most of the literature focuses on retained sponges, absorbable hemostatic agents such as Surgicel may also fail to degrade, particularly in highly inflammatory surgical environments. This retained material triggers a foreign-body granulomatous reaction, leading to pelvic mass formation and chronic inflammation. Because clinical symptoms can manifest weeks or even years later, these retained agents frequently mimic pathologic lesions on imaging

Familial Cases of Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease-Hemostatic and Molecular Markers.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a rare disease caused by avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Although its etiology is still not fully understood, evidence suggests that heritable prothrombotic and inflammatory factors, as well as environmental factors, may be implicated in its onset and progress. The objective of this study is to describe the genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors that may be associated with the etiology of LCPD. This study was conducted in three families and included seven related patients with an LCPD diagnosis. We evaluated the following gene alterations u

Vascular consequences of antidepressant use: Balancing neuropsychiatric benefits and hemostatic risks.

The prevalence of depressive disorders continues to increase, representing a leading contributor to global disability and disease burden. Although antidepressants remain the cornerstone of treatment, their variable efficacy and adverse effects have drawn increasing attention. Vascular homeostasis is tightly regulated by the dynamic balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis, processes essential for maintaining physiological integrity. Emerging evidence indicates that antidepressants, beyond their effects on mood and cognition, may modulate endothelial function, platelet activity, and the coa

Inflammation as a pleiotropic regulator of megakaryocyte and platelet hemostatic, immune, and metabolic function.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: During infectious and noninfectious inflammatory diseases, disruption of the immune-hemostatic balance increases both thrombotic and hemorrhagic risk. We propose that this bidirectional dysregulation reflects the integrated contribution of megakaryocyte reprogramming during thrombopoiesis and direct remodeling of circulating platelets by inflammatory mediators, two interconnected regulatory levels that together shape the prothrombotic and hemorrhagic platelet phenotypes observed across inflammatory conditions. RECENT FINDINGS: Current evidence supports a two-level framework

Bacteria-responsive antimicrobial and hemostatic cellulose-based dressing for wound treatments.

Microbial infection in open wounds can delay healing and lead to severe complications. This study introduces a bacterial-responsive cellulose-based fabric wound dressing (Fabric-PAC) with integrated antimicrobial and hemostatic functions. Fabric-PAC is chemically modified with polyphosphate (PolyP) and low-dose silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and further functionalized with a phthalocyanine-based photosensitizer via supramolecular interactions on surface. Upon contact with bacteria, the photosensitizer is displaced, exposing PolyP to initiate blood coagulation and platelet-deriven tissue remodel

Nanoscale cuttlebone-doped PVA/SA hydrogel with hemostatic and antibacterial properties.

Effective wound management remains a major clinical challenge, especially in preventing infections and promoting rapid healing. However, traditional wound dressings often lack multifunctionality, limiting their ability to support hemostasis and antibacterial protection. To address this challenge, in this work, a novel wound dressing was developed utilizing nano-cuttlebone particles, which are rich in calcium carbonate and chitin, to enhance hemostatic and antimicrobial functionality. The dressing, composed of polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, and nano-cuttlebone, addresses the need for advan

Viscoelastic Hemostatic Assays in Sepsis: From Pathophysiology to Potential Clinical Implications.

Sepsis is a complex syndrome characterized by physiological, pathological, and biochemical abnormalities induced by infection, with up to 70% of patients experiencing coagulation alterations, ranging from subclinical coagulopathy to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The multifactorial nature of sepsis-related coagulopathy and the limitations of standard diagnostic parameters, such as platelet count and traditional coagulation tests, complicate its definition and management. Assessing coagulopathy related to sepsis presents significant challenges due to current definitions primarily

A thermosensitive poloxamer hydrogel with ofloxacin and cationic microparticles for antibacterial and hemostatic applications.

Traditional hemostatic materials often fall short of meeting clinical demands in terms of both hemostasis and antibacterial efficiency. The use of cationic materials in the antibacterial and hemostatic fields has garnered significant attention. However, designing materials that effectively balance these two properties remains a critical challenge in the development of hemostatic materials. In this context, a dual-functional hydrogel (F-QMS-OX) was developed by incorporating cationic starch microparticles (QMS) and ofloxacin into a thermosensitive poloxamer hydrogel with optimized loading conte
