In the patients with chronic hepatitis C (HHC) there have been found different autoantibodies, some typical for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1, like: antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in 15-60%, anti-smooth muscle antibodies (ASMA) in 34-60%, or AIH type 2: anti liver/kidney microsomes 1 autoantibodies (LKM 1) in 0-6%. Also, antimitochondrial autoantibodies (AMA), which defines PBC, is discovered in 0.7-1.5% patients with HHC. The purpose of the research was to determine the titr of the serum autoantibodies, which characterise AIH in the patients with HHC and to compare demographical, clinical,

HCV has been implicated in a variety of immune disorders as Sjogren's Syndrome, thyroiditis, glomerulonephritis, panarteritis nodosa and AIH. Soon after its discovery HCV has been causative associated with AIH due to a high incidence of antibodies against the virus tested by first generation assays. However applying more specific systems and by direct demonstration of the HCV RNA we have found only 2% of patients with confirmed AIH to harbour the virus. About 19% of patients with virus Hepatitis C may present with autoantibodies in the serum as RNA, SNA and only 2% have antibodies against LKM

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Approximately 13% of patients with chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection have liver-kidney microsomal antibodies type 3 (LKM-3) directed against family 1 uridine 5'-diphosphate-glucuronosyl-transferases (UGT-1). The aim of this study was to characterize the prevalence and specificity of LKM-3 by recombinant antigen testing systems.
METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot were performed using baculovirus-generated human UGT-1.1 and -1.6 and rabbit UGT-1.6. Sera from patients with HDV (n = 50), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 2 (n = 50), hepati

Sera from 14 patients with type 2 autoimmune hepatitis (anti-LKM1 positive) were investigated for evidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Antibodies to HCV were detected in 13 patients by both commercial and "in-house" ELISAs and also by a second generation recombinant immunoblot assay. Nine of the 13 (69%) anti-HCV positive patients were shown to be viraemic by a polymerase chain reaction-based assay for serum HCV RNA. Neither anti-HCV nor serum HCV RNA were detected in any of 6 controls with primary biliary cirrhosis or in 39 healthy blood donors. These findings strongly suggest a rol

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) lacks a disease-specific diagnostic biomarker, particularly for patients who present with acute onset, normal IgG levels, or seronegative profiles. Recent advances in high-throughput autoantibody profiling technologies have enabled the systematic discovery of novel AIH-associated autoantigens. This review summarizes emerging autoantibodies that have been identified through proteome-wide screening approaches, including human protein microarrays and phage immunoprecipitation sequencing. Particular attention is given to anti-docking protein 2 (DOK2) and anti-mitochondri

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an enigmatic, relatively rare disease with a variable spectrum of presentation whose pathogenesis, diagnosis and management remain a major challenge. We have performed a review of recent developments in basic science, epidemiology, clinical science, therapeutics, and regulatory science, evaluating the challenges associated with the application of translational research and clinical trial design to a condition that is a chameleon in nature, where outcomes range from relatively benign disease through cirrhosis and acute liver failure. This review is focused on devel

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an immune-mediated liver disease characterized by a spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic liver enzyme abnormalities to fulminant liver failure. Despite significant achievements, the backbone of first-line AIH treatment, including corticosteroids and azathioprine, has remained nearly unchanged for 5 decades. However, up to 20% of patients experience insufficient response, loss of response, or treatment intolerance. For patients intolerant to first-line therapy, second-line options include mercaptopurine and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), wit

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic inflammatory liver disease of unknown etiology. It is a rare immune-mediated pathology without a typical clinical presentation and with a challenging diagnosis. The AIH has two types (types 1 and 2) that differ by the pattern of autoantibodies presented. Treatment is based on corticosteroid therapy with prednisolone, with or without azathioprine. The treatment aims to induce and maintain histological remission, improving symptoms and survival. Here, we present the case of a 72-year-old female patient admitted to the Internal Medicine Department with susp

This report described a patient not known to have a hepatic disease, found to have a drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis from denosumab. This is an unreported side effect, and here, we presented the possible predisposing factors and suggested monitoring parameters.

Autoimmune hepatitis is an uncommon condition that affects both adults and children and is characterized by chronic and recurrent inflammatory activity in the liver. This inflammation is accompanied by elevated IgG and autoantibody levels. Historically, treatment consists of steroids with the addition of azathioprine, which results in remission in approximately 80% of patients. Despite significant advancements in our understanding of the immune system over the past two decades, few modifications have been made to treatment algorithms, which have remained largely unchanged since they were first

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is relatively rare in children. Herein, our case demonstrates a unique presentation of AIH in a previously healthy 18-year-old female presenting with a mild cough, fatigue, and severe anemia (hemoglobin 2.9 g/dL). Initial evaluation revealed jaundice and scleral icterus, prompting transfer of care and further testing, which demonstrated severe microcytic anemia, pancytopenia, elevated liver enzymes, direct hyperbilirubinemia, and marked splenomegaly. Concern for autoimmune hemolytic anemia resulted in a delayed diagnosis. The combination of triple antibody positivity

Autoimmune hepatitis is a rare pathology characterized by biochemical and histological alterations. Two subtypes are known: type I affects children and adults, and type II affects almost exclusively children. So far there are no specific diagnostic criteria and it is considered a pathology of exclusion, although there are certain laboratory and histological alterations related to this entity. It can be asymptomatic or symptomatic, and the treatment of choice is immunosuppression. The use of non-invasive methods such as elastography can be useful in follow-up surveillance, both to evaluate trea

Few case reports discuss the incidences of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we present a case of SARS-CoV-2-induced AIH in a male patient who came into the emergency department with complaints of weight loss, poor oral intake, nausea, dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools, and scleral icterus, which began two weeks after he tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 PCR. Liver biopsy and subsequent histology confirmed the diagnosis of AIH with the most probable etiology being SARS-CoV-2 infection. The patient was treated with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and steroids wi

Drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis (DIAIH) is a specific phenotype of drug-induced liver injury that may lead to the devastating outcome of acute liver failure requiring liver transplantation. Drugs implicated in DIAIH include antimicrobials such as nitrofurantoin and minocycline, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, statins as well as anti-tumor necrosis agents. The clinical features of drug-induced liver injury are indistinguishable from idiopathic autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) as both may have positive AIH-related autoantibodies, elevated immunoglobulin G, as well as similar histopathological
