Antibodies to human herpes virus type 8 (HHV8) in general population and in individuals at risk for sexually transmitted diseases in Western Sicily.

BACKGROUND: Human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) appears to be the primary aetiologic agent of Kaposi sarcoma (KS). To study the distribution of HHV8, a seroepidemiological study was carried out in western Sicily, where a high incidence rate of classical KS is well documented. METHODS: A total of 970 sera of healthy human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) negative individuals of general population (1-70 years old) and 742 sera of individuals in different risk groups for HIV infection were evaluated by means of an indirect immunofluorescence assay able to detect antibodies to lytic and latent HHV8 antigens.

Risk factors for HIV infection overlooked in routine antenatal care.

We have ascertained the extent to which risk factors for HIV infection may escape detection by standard history-taking procedures in an antenatal clinic. This study was based on 1264 women from a multi-ethnic population in an inner London health district (City and Hackney). All had agreed to undergo attributable HIV testing and a detailed personal interview. Thirty-nine per cent (494 of 1264 women) reported risk factors contributed personally or by a partner. Most of these risk factors had not been earlier disclosed by routine history taking. In most cases the risk was residence and risk activ

[Comparative study of the therapy of Candida esophagitis in HIV-1-infected patients with fluconazole or amphotericin B and flucytosine].

In 20 HIV-patients (17 male homosexuals, 1 male and 1 female i.v. drug abuser and 1 female patient with M. Willebrand-Jürgens) Candida esophagitis was diagnosed by esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Clinically they presented retrosternal pain or an exacerbation of oral candidosis under local antimycotics. The diagnosis of Candida esophagitis was based on histopathologic examination and culture studies of biopsy specimen from macroscopically suspect lesions. Candida antigen was found in the serum of 30% of the patients, immunofluorescence was positive for Candida antibodies in 25%. A CMV- or HSV-esoph

A nonspecific disturbance of the gonadostat in women with transsexualism and isolated hypergonadotropism in the male-to-female disturbance of gender identity.

Principal parameters of gonadostat function were determined in 15 female-to-male (F-M) and 7 male-to-female (M-F) transsexual patients (T), all homosexuals. The data were compared with normal heterosexual controls of the respective sex. Anamnesis revealed prolongation of the menstrual cycles in F-M patients, mainly in those taking previously medication with depot-testosterone. However, also in patients with no previous medication the basal body temperature chart revealed anovulatory cycles (all 4 examined patients). In 8 of 9 patients (82.2%) with no previous medication an elevation of serum t

Fetal feminization and female gender identity in the testicular feminizing syndrome of androgen insensitivity.

Interview data on aspects of sex and eroticism from a sample of 10 chromosomally male (XY) patients with the complete testicular feminization (androgen insensitivity) syndrome and from a sample of 23 patients with the late-treated adrenogenital syndrome showed marked differences. Homosexual experiences and/or dreams were lacking in the androgen-insensitive group as compared with the adrenogenital group (p[Symbol: see text]0.01).The androgen-insensitive group reported lower frequency of sexual arousal from visual stimuli than did the adrenogenital group (p[Symbol: see text]0.05).Findings on dif

Unsafe sex in men who have sex with both men and women.

The sexual behaviors of bisexually active men, defined as men having sex with a man and a woman in previous 6 months, were compared with men who had sex with men only. Differential sexual practices associated with HIV risk between the two groups of men, as well as in the bisexual men with their male and female partners, were evaluated. Cross-sectional analyses were performed on baseline data from a prospective cohort of 508 young gay men recruited from bars, college campuses, and a health center in Boston from 1993 to 1994. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated on

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed content for nursing curricula.

There has been limited identification of core lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed (LGBTI) experience concepts that should be included in the nursing curricula. This article addresses the gap in the literature. To move nursing toward the goals of health equity and cultural humility in practice, education, and research, nursing curricula must integrate core LGBTI concepts, experiences, and needs related to health and illness. This article reviews LGBTI health care literature to address the attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to address curricular gaps and provide content sug

Alcohol use and alcohol-related problems among lesbians and gay men.

While a substantial amount is known about some of the risk factors for alcohol-related problems among lesbians and gay men, major gaps in knowledge exist. Epidemiological studies focusing on alcohol use rarely ask about sexual orientation, and broad-based studies of sexual minority population groups have only occasionally assessed alcohol use. Although the AIDS crisis has stimulated substantial research on alcohol and other substance use among gay men, only a handful of studies have systematically explored lesbians' use of alcohol. Further, existing research on sexual orientation and alcohol u

Peripheral T cell lymphoma with cytotoxic phenotype: an emerging disease in HIV-infected patients?

Recently, a 15-fold increased risk of T cell lymphomas has been estimated in HIV-infected populations. This increase has been observed for all T cell lymphoma subtypes. In the present report we describe clinical and pathological features of three consecutive cases of peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) with cytotoxic phenotype in HIV-positive patients that came to our attention in May-September 2002. The diagnosis of PTCL was made in lymph node (two cases) and in needle biopsies from liver and bone marrow of the same patient. The patients were two females (31 and 45 years old) and one male (49 y

[Problems posed by HIV infection in women in tropical zones].

Retroviruses (mainly H.I.V. 1 and H.I.V. 2) are now largely spread over in Central Africa and Caribbean Islands, particularly in large cities. Their transmission is essentially horizontal and mainly sexual. As a matter of fact, sexual transmission is responsible in about 80% of the cases, leaving only a small percentage to transmission by needle (or by any aggressive material), blood or blood by-products. As far as sexual transmission is concerned, it is essentially heterosexual, in spite of the primary epidemic outbreak in the occidental world that focused interest toward male homosexual grou

Resilience at the Intersection of Race/Ethnicity, Sex, and Sexual Orientation among U.S. Adults.

Resilience, a key protective factor for mental health, may vary across intersecting identities, but this remains underexplored. This study applied Intersectional Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy to examine resilience inequities at the intersection of race/ethnicity, sex, and sexual orientation among U.S. adults in a predominantly urban and suburban sample. Data came from 6543 adults in the National Wellbeing Survey 2024. Resilience was measured using 6-item Brief Resilience Scale (range 1-5), where higher scores indicate greater resilience. Participan

Isolation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth: a dimensional concept analysis.

AIM: To present the findings of a dimensional analysis of isolation in the context, and from the perspective, of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth are often at greater risk for negative health outcomes compared with heterosexual youth. Isolation is one risk factor cited throughout the literature; however, the concept is complicated and has many uses and thus warrants clarification. DESIGN: Concept Analysis. DATA SOURCES: Sources comprise 35 English language research articles retrieved from CINAHL and EBSCOHost (1987-2012).

Hirschfeld to hooker to herek to high schools: a study of the history and development of GLBT empirical research, institutional policies, and the relationship between the two.

Empirical gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) research has passed through three stages. Transitions between stages have been caused by an interaction of empirical research and institutional policies. The first period is from the late 1800s up to 1972, when research focused on categorizing homosexuality as a disease, treatments for homosexuality, and then research refuting the disease model. The second period ran from 1972 to approximately 1990, when researchers began to apply the disease model not to GLBT persons, but rather to those having negative attitudes toward homosexuality (h

Predictors of sexual behaviour among men and women in New York City area prisons.

The USA currently has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Individuals at greatest risk for HIV also tend to be among those at an elevated risk for incarceration. The HIV epidemic is driven by injection drug use and sexual behaviour, and estimates of prison-based sexual behaviour vary widely. This study examined sexual behaviour among 1369 incarcerated men and women in the New York City area. Approximately 13% of the sample (n = 176) reported being sexually active while incarcerated over the previous 6 months. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the predictors of p
