Sulfur (S) fumigation is a commonly used sterilization method in horticultural facilities against fungal diseases. S fumigation damaged cucumber leaves, although the response mechanism is unclear. This study analyzes the growth, transcriptome, and metabolomic profiles of young and mature leaves, ovaries, and commercial cucumber fruits to decipher the mechanism of cucumber stress response under S fumigation. S fumigation significantly changed the photosynthetic efficiency and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaves, but not fruit development, fruit mass, and peel color. Transcriptome analysis i

Girdling is an important horticultural practice that allows increased yields or modulated ripening but not much is known how it affects metabolic processes. Trunk girdling was performed at fruit set using a single-blade knife on two table grape cultivar SUPERIOR SEEDLESS® and SABLE SEEDLESS®. Sampling of berries was carried out 1 or 9 weeks after girdling in 2017 from both cultivars and 7 and 9 weeks after girdling of 'Sable' in 2018. As expected, girdling resulted in consistent increase in berry size but total soluble content of mature 'Superior' berries was not affected and in 'Sable' it was

We present a draft assembly of the genome of European pear (Pyrus communis) 'Bartlett'. Our assembly was developed employing second generation sequencing technology (Roche 454), from single-end, 2 kb, and 7 kb insert paired-end reads using Newbler (version 2.7). It contains 142,083 scaffolds greater than 499 bases (maximum scaffold length of 1.2 Mb) and covers a total of 577.3 Mb, representing most of the expected 600 Mb Pyrus genome. A total of 829,823 putative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected using re-sequencing of 'Louise Bonne de Jersey' and 'Old Home'. A total of 2,279

Excessive consumption of horticultural fruit is a double-edged sword with both positive and negative effects. In Eastern countries, a large number of people have suffered from shang huo as a result of excessive consumption of "heating" foods, such as lychee, longan, mandarin orange, mango and civet durian. The present study adopted a step by step strategy screened the compositions with pro-inflammatory effect in satsuma fruits. The pro-inflammatory effects of all fractions were evaluated in RAW 264.7 cell lines by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and RT-PCR tests. The soluble water ex

Intensity and type of management, the cultural variable shade, and the combination of woody and herbaceous annual and perennial plants were evaluated for their effect on key landscape arthropod pests. Azalea lace bugs, Stephanitis pyrioides (Scott), and twolined spittlebugs, Prosapia bicincta (Say), were most effectively suppressed in landscape designed with resistant plant species of woody ornamentals and turf. Landscapes containing susceptible plant counterparts were heavily infested by these two insect species in untreated control plots. A traditional management program of prescribed herbic

In Aalsmeer, a horticultural community near the main international airport in the Netherlands, an incidence of haematopoietic malignancies in young people over four times the national mean was observed in the period 1980-1985. A population based case-control study investigated the association with local environmental factors. For each case younger than 40 years of age (n = 14), diagnosed between 1975 and 1989, four controls, matched for age and gender, were selected via local general practitioners. All parents of patients and controls completed a questionnaire on their life style, living condi

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is a harmful pathogen that causes severe disease in tomato, pepper, and other horticultural and agronomic crops. Its genome comprises three linear single-stranded RNA molecules (segments L, M, and S), which are unequally packed in nucleocapsids. Although its genome structure and molecular mechanism of infection are well understood, the evolutionary dynamics of this virus require further analysis to determine the most probable viral ancestor, the date of divergence, the ancestral geographical source of dispersal, and the demographic history of TSWV. For this, we

BACKGROUND: The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys and the southern green stink bug Nezara viridula are key pests in fruit and vegetable production, including berry crops. Companion plants are increasingly used in diversified systems to divert or concentrate stink bugs. Yet, quantitative data on individual movement between main crops and companion vegetation in horticultural settings remain limited.
RESULTS: In semi-field cages with identical layout, H. halys released on raspberries gradually shifted to bean and sunflower companion plantings over a 5-day observation period, with gre

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a major agricultural byproduct whose complex lignocellulosic matrix hinders direct reuse and poses environmental risks when stockpiled. This study evaluated whether pretreatment with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could enhance SMS as a soil amendment for blueberry cultivation. Two PGPR-treated SMS formulations, along with raw SMS and a blank control, were applied to blueberry seedlings in a 10-month greenhouse experiment. Plant height, rhizosphere soil nutrients, enzyme activities, lignocellulose fractions, and the microbial communities were moni

Phytoplasmas are insect-transmitted plant pathogens that manipulate host development through secreted effector proteins. While they are notorious for causing agricultural losses, in the ornamental plant poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), phytoplasma infection is uniquely harnessed to induce the commercially desirable free-branching trait. However, the effectors responsible for this phenotype have remained unknown. To address this question, we sequenced and analysed the 705,138 bp genome of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma pruni' PR2021, a strain associated with the high-branching cultivar Princettia P

Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AMs) represent one of the most widespread and extensively studied symbiotic associations between plants and beneficial microorganisms. Over 80% of terrestrial plant species, including the majority of agricultural and horticultural crops, are capable of establishing this mutualistic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Through this symbiosis, the fungus aids the plant in the uptake of water and mineral nutrients, particularly under stress conditions. Beyond nutrient acquisition, AM symbiosis also influences key ecological and agronomic traits, including

Camptotheca acuminata, a tree native to southern China and cultivated for horticultural purposes, has attracted considerable attention due to its ability to synthesize camptothecin-type compounds with potent antitumor activity. Flavonoids and camptothecins share a conserved benzene ring scaffold, suggesting potential crosstalk in their biosynthetic pathways. Metabolic profiling of 1-year-old C. acuminata seedlings revealed tissue-specific accumulation of O-methylated quercetin and camptothecin in the stem phloem. Notably, CaOMT3, one of four clustered O-methyltransferase genes, showed expressi

Studying the functions of the UV-B photoreceptor UVR8 in large, indeterminate-growth tomato plants is challenging due to the difficulty of applying uniform UV-B irradiation. To overcome this limitation, we generated a constitutively active photoreceptor variant, SlUVR8W289A, by substituting tryptophan 289 with alanine. This variant enables functional investigation of SlUVR8 in tomato without the need for UV-B treatment. Size exclusion chromatography coupled with western blot analysis revealed that the W289A substitution destabilizes SlUVR8 homodimers and alters protein conformation. In transge

Fruit size and shape, which influence horticultural quality, are determined by the number and the size of the cells in the local region. In fruit trees, however, the difficulty of applying molecular genetic approaches has hindered a detailed understanding of the localization and orientation of cell division in developing fruit tissues. In this study, we established a novel framework to visualize cell division in pre-anthesis ovaries of drupe crops, providing clear insight into the spatial distribution and orientation of dividing cells. We systematically optimized a 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (E
