Effect of COVID-19-Related Lockdown οn Hospital Admissions for Asthma and COPD Exacerbations: Associations with Air Pollution and Patient Characteristics.

We conducted a retrospective observational study to assess the hospitalization rates for acute exacerbations of asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) during the first imposed lockdown in Athens, Greece. Patient characteristics and the concentration of eight air pollutants [namely, NO (nitrogen monoxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5), PM10 (particulate matter 10), O3 (ozone), SO2 (sulfur dioxide) and benzene] were considered. A total of 153 consecutive hospital admissions were studied. Reduced admissions occurred in the Lockdown

Epidemiology and cost of Lyme disease-related hospitalizations among patients with employer-sponsored health insurance-United States, 2005-2014.

An estimated 300,000 cases of Lyme disease occur in the United States annually. Disseminated Lyme disease may result in carditis, arthritis, facial palsy or meningitis, sometimes requiring hospitalization. We describe the epidemiology and cost of Lyme disease-related hospitalizations. We analysed 2005-2014 data from the Truven Health Analytics MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Databases to identify inpatient records associated with Lyme disease based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes. We estimated the annual number and

Role of Vitamin D Replacement on Health Related Quality of Life in Hospitalized Patients with "Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease".

Burden of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is substantial and increasing in the world. There are controversial reports regarding vitamin D supplementation in COPD. We investigated relationship between vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) supplementation with Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and symptom recovery in AECOPD patients with concurrent Vitamin D Deficiency (VDD). A placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial was designed. AECOPD patients with VDD were randomly allocated to receive either vitamin D 300,000 IU (n = 35) or placebo (n = 35) by intramuscular injection. Primary

Survival After Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Relation to Age and Early Identification of Patients With Minimal Chance of Long-Term Survival.

BACKGROUND: Survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has increased during the last decade in Denmark. We aimed to study the impact of age on changes in survival and whether it was possible to identify patients with minimal chance of 30-day survival. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using data from the nationwide Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry (2001─2011), we identified 21 480 patients ≥18 years old with a presumed cardiac-caused out-of-hospital cardiac arrest for which resuscitation was attempted. Patients were divided into 3 preselected age-groups: working-age patients 18 to 65 years of age (33.7%)

[Food-related fungal infection risk in agranulocytosis. Mycological control of 273 food items offered to patients hospitalized in sterile units].

In sterile hospital units filamentous fungal infections are an unacceptable risk in patients with prolonged agranulocytosis. The occurrence of 3 successive cases in the Sterile unit of University Hospital of Grenoble prompted us to investigate in all elements of sterile unit, and notably food-processing. Two cooked rice dishes given to these patients were found to contain a substantial amount of Aspergillus fumigatus and were probably responsible for these infections. A more detailed study was carried out to evaluate the degree of food contamination by fungi in sterile unit. The study included

Incidence and predictors of seizure-related injuries among epileptic patients undergoing follow-up treatment at public hospitals in Central Ethiopia.

Seizure-related injuries represent a significant concern for both individuals with epilepsy and their caregivers. Compared to the general population, those diagnosed with epilepsy face a heightened risk of sustaining injuries. Despite this, there is a notable scarcity of data regarding seizure-related injuries among epileptic patients. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of seizure-related injuries and identify their predictors among epileptic patients undergoing follow-up treatment at selected public hospitals in Central Ethiopia, in 2023. A prospective follow-up study was carried out

Hospital-related healthcare expenditure of impending versus completed pathological femur fractures: a propensity score matched study of 265 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The prevalence of metastatic bone disease as well as the accompanying societal costs are expected to increase due to advances in cancer treatment. While the literature suggests that there is economic value in prophylactic stabilization compared with the fixation of completed pathological fractures in long bone metastases, studies are limited by their small sample sizes and insufficient correction for potential confounders. We aimed to evaluate whether prophylactic treatment of an impending femur fracture was associated with lower healthcare costs compared with completed
