Gastropod immunology is informed importantly by the study of the frequent encounters snails endure with digeneans (digenetic trematodes). One of the hallmarks of gastropod-digenean associations is their specificity: any particular digenean parasite species is transmitted by a limited subset of snail taxa. We discuss the nature of this specificity, including its immunological basis. We then review studies of the model gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata indicating that the baseline responses of snails to digeneans can be elevated in a specific manner. Studies incorporating molecular and functional

While flagella have been studied extensively as motility organelles, with a focus on internal structures such as the axoneme, more recent re … have begun to identify protein components of the flagellar surface that must mediate these diverse host-parasite interactions. The increasing corpus of knowledge on kinetoplastid flagella will likely prove illuminating for other flagellated or ciliated pathogens as well.

Parasite infections are increasingly reported to change the microbiome of the parasitized hosts, while parasites bring their own microbes to … sociation between the parasite's microbiome and the evolution of host manipulation by parasites and host-parasite interactions more generally.

The differences in host response among strains of rats to intestinal nematode parasite Trichinella spiralis infection could provide a powerf … ction of more adult worms from the gut. The results from the present study provide more insights on host-parasite interactions, which may be useful in facilitating the development of novel approaches for treatment and control of intestinal parasites in human and domestic livestock.

The interplay of intermediate host fish and plerocercoids of diphyllobothriidean cestodes results in epizootics that are deceptively simple, but conceal complex biotic and abiotic interactions shaping each event independently. Although general descriptions of epizootics and some details of biotic interactions between enemies are known, much remains to be discovered about the abiotic and biotic forces and their interactions driving epizootics. This study shows that the duration of an epizootic of Schistocephalus solidus was sustained by high prevalence, mean intensity, and PI (parasite index-pa

Cryptosporidium parvum is a prevalent protozoan pathogen responsible for moderate to severe diarrhea in humans and animals, posing a significant threat to global public health. Host-parasite interactions play a crucial role in the infection process of C. parvum. Cyclophilin 23 (CpCyP23), a secreted protein of C. parvum, is implicated in parasite development and pathogenicity. As a secretory protein, its function often relies on interactions with host cell proteins. However, it remains unclear whether CpCyP23 has host interaction partners and what specific roles such interactions play during in…

From the unique perspective of the parasite, each potential host exists as an ecosystem in its own right, comprised of biotic and abiotic components. If the parasite's limits of tolerance are not exceeded by the host environment, parasitism may occur. The organs of the host can be viewed as integrated communities comprised of distinct cell populations. Each population of cells occupies a unique ecological niche and contributes to the community in an essential way. The coordinated interactions among cells within each community and among the communities themselves are essential for the host to m

Understanding how a changing climate influences host-parasite interactions is important to predict disease-driven extinction risks. Insect immune responses are sensitive to seasonal climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall, however, the influence of seasonal climatic fluctuations on insect immune responses and parasite prevalence remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we studied seasonal variation in immune response and endoparasite (protozoan gregarine) prevalence (proportion of infection) in Ischnura heterosticta damselflies. Damselflies may experience increased …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current review outlines recent discoveries on the infection of erythroid cells by Plasmodium parasites, focusing on the molecular interactions governing the tropism of parasites for their host cell and the implications of this tropism for parasite biology and erythroid cell maturation.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although most studies about the interactions of Plasmodium parasites and their host cell focused on the deadliest human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, and the erythrocyte, there is increasing evidence that several Plasmodium species, including P. falciparum, als

Fasciolosis is a neglected tropical disease caused by helminth parasites of the genus Fasciola spp., including Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) and Fasciola gigantica (F. gigantica), being a major zoonotic problem of human and animal health. Its control with antihelminthics is becoming ineffective due to the increase in parasite resistance. Developing new therapeutic protocols is crucial to a deeper knowledge of the molecular bases in the host-parasite interactions. The high-throughput omics technologies have dramatically provided unprecedented insights into the complexity of the molecular host…

INTRODUCTION: Evidence is emerging of complex interactions occurring between gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of ruminants and the resident gut flora, with likely implications for the pathophysiology of worm infection and disease. Similarly, recent data point toward the occurrence of a GI nematode (GIN)-specific microbiota, with potential roles in worm fundamental physiology and reproduction. Parasite-microbiota relationships might represent potential targets for the development of novel parasiticides.

Defences against parasites are characterized by inducible, amplifiable responses, often with a memory component. Inducible defences with similar properties are common in a variety of other types of interactions, for example many aquatic invertebrates produce inducible structural defences against their predators and competitors. Most inducible defences have the following properties: (1) a threshold of activation; (2) an amplification of response with increasing stimulus; (3) a memory component. Specificity, amplification and memory are the basis for defining a defence as 'immune' (Klein, 1982),

Malaria, which is caused by Plasmodium parasites through Anopheles mosquito transmission, remains one of the most life-threatening diseases … rity of this epidemic disease is dependent on many factors, including the parasite characteristics, host-parasite interactions, and the pathology of the infection. The lack of this information adds to the challenges to …

AbstractHost-parasite interactions are likely to involve eco-evolutionary feedbacks. Parasites can impose strong selection on host immune traits. Evolution of these traits can suppress parasite abundance, which alters the strength of selection. Such eco-evo feedbacks can be hard to document in natural settings, where long-term interactions may have converged on relatively stable equilibria. However, when a species disperses into an unoccupied habitat, it can experience altered parasite abundance (e.g., enemy release) or encounter new parasite genotypes. These perturbations may be followed by o…

Host-parasite interactions represent an evolutionary arms race, with parasites evolving strategies to exploit host resources, and hosts deploying mechanisms to resist or tolerate infection. Unlike vertebrates, which possess a sophisticated immune system, invertebrates rely entirely on innate immunity to combat pathogens. Yet, the molecular underpinnings and life-history consequences of immune activation remain little understood in non-insect invertebrates. Here, we combine life-history trait analysis with transcriptomics to investigate immune responses in an aquatic invertebrate exposed to a n…

Lipid mediators can control the inflammatory response in infectious diseases, including leishmaniasis. However, these mediators may promote antagonistic roles in the Leishmania-host interaction depending on the species involved in the infection. Herein, we analyzed the role of mediators in the Leishmania-host interaction in the experimental and clinical context, aiming to identify the main cell types studied, as well as the main eicosanoids and their influence during the infection. The main lipid mediators studied were the eicosanoids LTB4 and PGE2, which are related to the inflammatory respon
