Power Outage Preparedness and Concern among Vulnerable New York City Residents.

Power outages can impact health, and certain populations may be more at risk. Personal preparedness may reduce impacts, but information on power outage preparedness and risk perception among vulnerable populations is limited. We examined power outage preparedness and concern among New York City residents, including vulnerable populations defined as older adults (≥ 65 years), and respondents with household members who require assistance with daily activities or depend on electric medical devices. A random sample telephone survey was conducted during November-December 2016. Preparedness was defi

A Multi-Objective Approach for Optimal Energy Management in Smart Home Using the Reinforcement Learning.

Maintaining a fair use of energy consumption in smart homes with many household appliances requires sophisticated algorithms working together in real time. Similarly, choosing a proper schedule for appliances operation can be used to reduce inappropriate energy consumption. However, scheduling appliances always depend on the behavior of a smart home user. Thus, modeling human interaction with appliances is needed to design an efficient scheduling algorithm with real-time support. In this regard, we propose a scheduling algorithm based on human appliances interaction in smart homes using reinfo

Evaluation of a disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation programme in Bangladesh: study protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There remains a lack of evidence on which livelihoods interventions are effective for persons with disabilities, particularly given the fact that the impact of interventions varies according to contextual factors. The disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation (DIUPG) programme is an adaptation of the ultra-poor graduation programme (UPG), designed to tackle extreme poverty among persons with disabilities. The DIUPG programme has been previously evaluated in Uganda and found to have successfully improved household consumption, amidst the challenges of COVID-19 and funding cuts. The

First national tuberculosis patient cost survey in Lao People's Democratic Republic: Assessment of the financial burden faced by TB-affected households and the comparisons by drug-resistance and HIV status.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) patients incur large costs for care seeking, diagnosis, and treatment. To understand the magnitude of this financial burden and its main cost drivers, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) National TB Programme carried out the first national TB patient cost survey in 2018-2019. METHOD: A facility-based cross-sectional survey was conducted based on a nationally representative sample of TB patients from public health facilities across 12 provinces. A total of 848 TB patients including 30 drug resistant (DR)-TB and 123 TB-HIV coinfected patients were interviewe

Parental psychological distress in the postnatal period in Japan: a population-based analysis of a national cross-sectional survey.

Mental health assessments of both members of a couple are important when considering the child-rearing environment. The prevalence and factors associated with both parents' psychological distress have not been fully investigated. A nationally representative sample from the 2016 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions in Japan was used to examine the prevalence of moderate and severe psychological distress in parents in the first year after childbirth. In total, 3,514 two-parent households raising children under one year old met the study criteria. The Japanese version of Kessler 6 was used t

Multimorbidity and health-related quality of life after tuberculosis treatment in Zimbabwe: A cross-sectional study with household comparators.

Chronic conditions both drive development of and are consequences of tuberculosis (TB). While there is growing awareness of chronic lung disease, data on other health conditions post-TB are limited. In this cross-sectional study in Zimbabwe, we offered adults with pulmonary TB an integrated health check at or after treatment completion, assessing uptake and yield. Members of the same households were also offered the intervention. Selecting household members without prior or current TB as a comparator, we calculated odds ratios (OR) for HIV, diabetes, hypertension, underweight, anaemia, symptom

Evaluating dengue transmission dynamics in an endemic urban setting in Viet Nam: an index-household contact cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Current methods for controlling the spread of dengue in endemic settings typically rely on vector control in and around the homes of reporting cases, with varying levels of success. We aimed to evaluate the role of the household as a source of infection risk and assess the spatial scale of dengue virus transmission to understand why targeted vector control might not work effectively. METHODS: In this index-household contact cohort study, dengue virus NS1-positive index cases reporting to a polyclinic or Tropical Medicine Hospital, together with their household contacts (aged >18 y

Social capital is associated with lower mosquito vector indices: secondary analysis from a cluster randomised controlled trial of community mobilisation for dengue prevention in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito is central to reducing the risk of dengue, zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Randomised controlled trials, including the Camino Verde trial in Mexico and Nicaragua, demonstrate the convincing impact of community mobilisation interventions on vector indices. These interventions might work through building social capital but little is known about the relationship between social capital and vector indices. METHODS: A secondary analysis used data collected from 45 intervention clusters and 45 control clusters in the impact survey of the Mexican

Field-validated microbial deodorant reduces hazardous gas exposure and improves air quality in rural household toilets.

Malodorous emissions from rural sanitation systems pose a direct environmental health concern. This study developed a composite microbial deodorant (CMD) using five bacterial strains isolated from activated sludge, combined in an optimal 1:1:1:1:1 ratio determined by orthogonal testing, to mitigate emissions of NH₃ and H₂S-key hazardous and odorous pollutants. In laboratory simulations, the CMD reduced NH₃ and H₂S by 82.1% and 86.1%, respectively. A pivotal 6-month field evaluation in three common types of rural household toilets demonstrated sustained, real-world efficacy, with peak removal r

Maternal Exposure to Domestic Hair Cosmetics and Occupational Endocrine Disruptors Is Associated with a Higher Risk of Hypospadias in the Offspring.

Pregnant women are exposed to various chemical products at home and at work. Some of these products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as cosmetics, pesticides, industrial chemicals, heavy metals, plastics or medications that could alter sexual differentiation and increase the risk of hypospadias. We evaluated maternal occupational and household exposures that could constitute risk factors for hypospadias. From 2011 to 2014, we enrolled 57 full-term newborns with hypospadias and three randomly selected controls per case (162 control newborns), matched for gestational age, from
