The causes of congenital hydrocephalus vary widely and have an important effect in determining the future counseling of affected cases. We analyzed the postmortem findings of 49 autopsies diagnosed as hydrocephalus to find the causes and related conditions. The cases were collected during the last 10 years (1981-1990). The cases consisted of 25 cases associated with various congenital malformations of the central nervous system (CNS), 14 cases of posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus, 4 cases of postinfection hydrocephalus, and 2 cases of hydranencephaly. Four cases were associated with supracerebella…

OBJECT: The development of modern neuroendoscopic technology brought back the use of choroid plexus surgery for the treatment of some patients with hydrocephalus. This study explored the use of endoscopic coagulation of the choroid plexus (ECCP) for the treatment of severely advanced forms of hydrocephalus in three children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three children with markedly dilated ventricles underwent ECCP. The first child had fetal hydranencephaly, the second had holoprosencephaly, and the third had severe hydrocephalus associated with other congenital malformations. All three children had…

About 1000 calves with a congenital disease were born in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan, between October 1990 and October 1991, the peaks of th … n eye, cataracts, and irregularities and defects of the teeth. At necropsy, almost all cases showed hydranencephaly, and many had cerebral defects and cerebellar hypoplasia or agenesis. Both cerebral and cerebellar lesions were seen in six cases, two of which showed a hypoplastic defect of the brain stem. Histopathological examination of the affected organs revea …

Disseminated herpes simplex virus type 2 was unexpectedly discovered in a baby delivered by primary cesarean section at 36 weeks' gestation prior to rupture of the membranes. The mother was free of orogenital lesions at each prenatal examination. Examination of the placenta revealed chorioamnionitis implicating an ascending infection from the mother's infected genital tract.

Gray scale ultrasonography of the brain was performed in 93 infants with cerebral malformations. The most common malformation was the Chiari … ic echofree lesions of various size, usually located symmetrically in both cerebral hemispheres. In hydranencephaly (4 children) both hemispheres were replaced by echofree space occupying bubbles. In 5 children with agenesis of the corpus callosum no corpus callosum could be demonstrated by sonography. Coronal sections displaced the typical bull's head shape, for …

To clarify the pathogenicity of Akabane virus for ovine embryos, pregnant ewes were inoculated intravenously with the virus. As a result, al … virus was inoculated at 30 days of pregnancy. They consisted of ankylosis of the limbs, scoliosis, hydranencephaly, porencephaly, stillbirth with dwarfism, and death after birth with dwarfism and weakness. Nothing abnormal was found in any neonatal lambs born from ewes inoculated with the virus at 91--101 days of pregnancy. When embryos exceeded 64 days of intra …

The aim of the study was to provide accurate information regarding live-born infant survival after diagnosis of fatal fetal anomaly (FFA) to … triploidy (3.5 h-20 days; 10.5 days), whose occurrence was rare. Anhydramnios, craniorachischisis, hydranencephaly and severe hydrocephalus were extremely rare and all deaths were neonatal deaths. Our results provide 13 years of national natural history data of live birth FFA survival. This provides objective information to aid obstetric counselling of couples u …

The clinical and X-ray findings in 9 infants with total and in one infant with unilateral forms of hydroanencephaly are discussed. This rare anomaly of the central nervous system is interesting from several standpoints: study of the etiopathogenic mechanisms responsible for atrophy of the hemispheres; study of different clinical phenomena in the absence of the cerebral hemispheres; study of c.s.f. changes in the absence of cerebral parenchyma; differential diagnosis with other pathological conditions, with extreme degree of hydrocephalus in the first place, which is very important for the ther

OBJECTIVE: We present prenatal diagnosis of hydrancephaly and enlarged cerebellum and cisterna magna in a fetus with thanatophoric dysplasia type II (TD2) and a review of prenatal diagnosis of brain anomalies associated with TD.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman was referred for genetic counseling at 25 weeks of gestation because of fetal ultrasound abnormalities. Prenatal ultrasound at 14 weeks of gestation revealed an increased nuchal translucency (NT) and hydrocephalus. Level II ultrasound examination at 25 weeks of gestation revealed hydrancephaly, macrocephaly, a cloverleaf skull, frontal

UNLABELLED: We generated a recombinant Akabane virus (AKAV) expressing enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP-AKAV) by using reverse gene … ct and which can be easily visualized.
IMPORTANCE: AKAV is the etiological agent of arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly syndrome in ruminants, which causes considerable economic loss to the livestock industry. We successfully generated a recombinant enhanced green fluorescent protein-tagged AKAV containing an artificial ambisense S genome. This virus could become a u …

In July 2024, bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) was first detected in southern Belgium, marking the onset of a major epidemic wave. Lesions such as hydranencephaly were confirmed in PCR-positive foetuses, with a malformation rate of 32.24% in affected herds from weeks 36 to 52 (i.e., 22 times higher than in previous years). Gestational stage analysis indicated that congenital lesions were most frequent followi …

BACKGROUND: Akabane virus is a member of the genus Orthobunyavirus in the family Bunyaviridae. It is transmitted by hematophagous arthropod vectors such as Culicoides biting midges and is widely distributed in temperate to tropical regions of the world. The virus is well known as a teratogenic pathogen which causes abortions, stillbirths, premature births and congenital abnormalities with arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly syndrome in cattle, sheep and goats. On the other hand, it is reported that the virus rarely induces encephalomyelitis in cattle by postnatal infection. A first large-scale epid…

To investigate the relationship between renal agenesis and fetal growth retardation, 6 fetal sheep underwent bilateral nephrectomy and carotid artery catheterization between 105 and 125 days of gestation. Five fetal sheep were catheterized at a similar age as controls and all but one were delivered between 134 days and 147 days gestation. The weights of the fetuses did not differ significantly but the nephrectomized fetuses were shorter than their controls (P less than 0.01). Hydranencephaly was observed in two nephrectomized animals and the mean brain weight was reduced in this group (P less …
