The Potential of CO2 Hydrogenation to Produce e‑Fuels: Thermodynamic and Techno-economic Analysis.

Since the 19th century, petroleum has underpinned societal development and industrial progress, serving as a primary source of heating, power, and transportation fuels. However, its detrimental effects on the environment and urban areas have highlighted the urgent need to transition toward more sustainable energy alternatives. CO2 hydrogenation to electrofuels (i.e., e-fuels) emerges as a promising pathway for cleaner energy production. This study focuses on the thermodynamic and techno-economic aspects for 12 different e-fuels: methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, gasoline, kerosene, di…

Methyl Formate Meets Water: Phosphine-Free Mn(I) Catalysis for Chemoselective Olefin & Carbonyl Hydrogenation.

Employing 3d-metal hydrides in hydrogen-transfer catalysis with water as a supplementary reagent remains in its infancy. Herein, we report a phosphine-free Mn(I)-bisNHC system that mediates methyl formate dehydrogenation in water, enabling chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of olefinic bonds in diverse aryl acrylonitriles and phenyl enones and carbonyl groups in α,β-epoxy ketones. Combined experimental and DFT studies reveal base-assisted Mn-H formation from MF/H2O and substrate-driven electronic effects governing selectivity, establishing a robust platform for aqueous hydrogen-transfer tra…

Nickel and platinum modified exfoliated carbon nitride as photo-thermal catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation.

The photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into value-added fuels and chemicals is a promising route to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while enabling sustainable energy storage. This study investigates the use of catalysts composed of exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride modified with either single-atom Ni sites or Pt nanoparticles for photo-thermal CO2 hydrogenation under combined light irradiation and thermal activation. The photocatalysts have been extensively characterized by different physico-chemical techniques, allowing the study of structure-activity relationships. Both metal-mo…

Cu+-Cu0 Cluster Pairs in Defective MOFs for Highly Synergistic CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Precise arrangement of multivalent Cu sites for the synchronized activation of CO2 and H2 in selective methanol synthesis remained challenging. Herein, we designed spatially arrayed Cu+-Cu0 cluster pairs confined within UiO-66 (U66) to achieve spatiotemporally directed CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This architecture was constructed by creating missing-linker defects within U66 using L-ascorbic acid (LA), followed by sequential anchoring of high-density, adjacent Cu+-Cu0 cluster pairs (≈1:1 ratio) to yield a Cu/U66(LA-Cu) catalyst. Under reaction conditions of 220°C and 3 MPa, this catalyst ac…

Synergetic catalysis via zeolite-encapsulated PdCu alloy for highly efficient CO2 hydrogenation to ethanol.

CO2 catalytic hydrogenation presents a highly promising and alternative pathway for ethanol production, offering the dual benefits of large-scale CO2 emission reduction and green H2 storage. However, this approach faces major challenges such as low ethanol selectivity and activity, stemming from the complex reaction network and the lack of efficient catalyst design strategies. In this work, we proposed an effective catalyst design strategy for CO2 hydrogenation to ethanol by constructing synergetic catalytic sites between alloy nanoparticles and zeolite to decouple key competing reaction steps…

Catalytic Hydrogenation of CO2 to Alternative Fuels: A Review of Methanation and Related Pathways.

The imperative to mitigate climate change has accelerated the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, particularly CO2 hydrogenation into high-value chemicals and alternative fuels. This work evaluates the fundamental thermodynamic limitations and the primary directions of CO2 conversion, with a primary focus on methanation, alongside related pathways such as methanol synthesis and the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction. To overcome the high kinetic barriers of CO2 activation, various catalytic systems are analyzed. While noble metal catalysts exhibit …

Manganese-Catalyzed Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Polarized Olefins via a Collaborative Hydrogen Transfer Process.

Asymmetric (transfer) hydrogenation of olefins is an important route to chiral molecules used in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fine chemicals. Although this transformation is well established with ruthenium-, rhodium-, and iridium-based catalysts, analogous reactions catalyzed by earth-abundant metals remain limited, particularly for acyclic olefins. Here we report a manganese catalytic system that enables highly enantioselective reduction of both cyclic and acyclic olefins, delivering diverse chiral products in up to 99% yield and >99% ee. Density functional theory (DFT) studies indicat…

Metastable Phase Noble-Metal-Free Core-Shell Structure for Efficient Electrocatalytic Nitrobenzene Transfer Hydrogenation.

In order to study the catalytic behavior of a metastable-phase catalyst in electrocatalytic hydrogenation, we report a new metastable-phase noble-metal-free core-shell catalyst with a metastable hexagonal closest packed (hcp) phase Ni as the shell and face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase Cu as the core (Cu@hcp Ni NPs) for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (Ph-NO2) to aniline (Ph-NH2). Using H2O as the hydrogen source, it achieves up to 99.63% Ph-NO2 conversion and ∼100% Ph-NH2 selectivity, with an improved activity turnover frequency (TOF: 6640 h-1), much higher than those of hcp Ni NP…

DFT-Assisted Microkinetic Study of Transfer Hydrogenation over Homogeneous and Immobilized Cp*Ir Complexes.

DFT calculations were done to investigate the kinetic mechanism of benzaldehyde transfer hydrogenation using [Cp*IrCl2]2 complexes in isopropyl alcohol in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide. Predicted energy barriers provide evidence that the inner-sphere (IS) mechanism (effective barrier 53.0 kJ/mol) is favored over the outer-sphere (OS) and Meerwein-Pondorf-Verley (MPV) mechanisms. Reaction kinetics was studied using both homogeneous and immobilized Cp*Ir complexes as catalysts. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde on these catalysts,…

Promoting Effects of Zr on CO2 Hydrogenation over Porous Co/CexZr1-xO2-δ Catalyst.

The porous Co/CexZr1-xO2-δ catalysts were prepared by using a template agent-impregnation method. The physicochemical properties of the prepared catalysts were studied by using the XRD, BET, H2-TPR, and H2-TPD. The effects of the catalyst structure and Zr dosage on CO2 hydrogenation performances were also investigated. The porous CexZr1-xO2 support prepared by the hard-template method has a large specific surface area and developed pore structure. With the increment of Zr dosage, the crystal phase structure of the prepared porous CexZr1-xO2 support transforms from cubic phase to tetragonal pha…

Thermodynamic Hydricity of a Ruthenium CO2 Hydrogenation Catalyst Supported by a Rigid PNP Pincer.

Ruthenium hydride complexes supported by pincer ligands play a crucial role in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to reduced C1 chemicals such as formic acid and methanol. Toward a better understanding of their hydride transfer reactivity, knowledge of the underlying thermodynamic hydricity values is deemed critical, but relevant studies remain rare. Herein, we report the experimental thermodynamic hydricity of a new ruthenium CO2 hydrogenation catalyst (acriPNP)RuH(CO)(PPh3) (1) supported by a rigid, acridane-based PNP pincer ligand. We provide the synthesis, structure, and spectroscopic char…

Boosting Hydrogenation of CO2 Using Cationic Cu Atomically Dispersed on 2D γ-Al2O3 Nanosheets.

The continuous development of novel catalytic approaches is crucial for advancing efficient CO2 hydrogenation processes. Drawing inspiration from single-atom catalysis and 2D materials, we designed a new 2D single-atom catalyst with excellent thermal stability by thermally treating Cu-adsorbed γ-AlOOH nanosheets, which yielded a Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with high activity in the hydrogenation of CO2-yielding methanol (CH3OH), dimethyl ether (DME), and CO as products. The active Cu sites are monodispersed and highly stable due to their cationic oxidation state and their substitution for pentacoordin…

Reductive Zincke Reaction: Opening of Pyridinium Rings to δ-Amino Ketones via Transfer Hydrogenation.

The Zincke reaction and Birch reduction have been one of the few reactions that allow for ring opening of pyridines ever since the discovery of pyridine more than a century ago. This paper presents a new addition to the list of pyridine ring-opening reactions, reductive Zincke reaction, which affords saturated δ-amino ketones. Under the catalysis of a simple rhodium complex, pyridinium salts with diverse substituents are reduced with formic acid, ring-opened with water, transaminated with a secondary amine and further reduced to afford a wide range of δ-amino ketones, including those in which

Enhancement of CO2 Hydrogenation to Light Olefins by Developing a Higher Alcohols-Intermediate Route.

CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins generally occurs via Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis and methanol-intermediate routes. However, these two routes usually give low light olefin yields, although large numbers of catalysts have been fabricated. This results from the limitation of the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) law or the formation of initial C-C bond and hydrocarbon pool (HCP) species. To overcome these problems, a higher alcohol-intermediate route is developed here as these alcoholic products are rapidly dehydrated to light olefins. The designed Na-CuFeOx/H-GeAPO-34 composite shows CO2 convers…

Mn-Catalyzed Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Ketones Improved by Cinchona Alkaloid-Derived NNS Ligands.

A novel class of phosphine-free manganese catalysts incorporating cinchona alkaloid-derived NNS ligands (L1-L8) has been successfully developed for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH). Among these, manganese complex Mn(CO)3(L1)Br demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance in the transfer hydrogenation of various ketone substrates (38 examples), achieving exceptional enantioselectivities of up to 99%. Through combined experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations, we proposed a plausible mechanistic pathway for the manganese-catalyzed ATH.

Characteristics and catalytic behavior of Ru-Sn bimetallic catalysts for TMCB hydrogenation to CBDO.

A series of Ru-Sn/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by the immersion method for tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dione (TMCB) hydrogenation to prepare 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO). The effect of the preparation method and reaction technology on TMCB hydrogenation activity was discussed. The catalysts were analyzed by means of XRD, BET, H2-TPR, XPS, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and it was found that the synthesized Ru was distributed on the surface of the carrier in the form of nanoparticles, showing a good catalytic effect. The resul…

Recent progress of heterogeneous catalysts for transfer hydrogenation under the background of carbon neutrality.

Under the background of carbon neutrality, the direct conversion of greenhouse CO2 to high value added fuels and chemicals is becoming an important and promising technology. Among them, the generation of liquid C1 products (formic acid and methanol) has made great progress; nevertheless, it encounters the problem of how to use it efficiently to solve the overcapacity issue. In this review, we suggest that the catalytic transfer hydrogenation using formic acid and methanol as the hydrogen sources is a critical and potential route for the substitution for the fossil fuel-derived H2 to generate e…

Biomimetic Frustrated Lewis Pair Catalysts for Hydrogenation of CO to Methanol at Low Temperatures.

The industrial production of methanol through CO hydrogenation using the Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst requires harsh conditions, and the development of new catalysts with low operating temperatures is highly desirable. In this study, organic biomimetic FLP catalysts with good tolerance to CO poison are theoretically designed. The base-free catalytic reaction contains the 1,1-addition of CO into a formic acid intermediate and the hydrogenation of the formic acid intermediate into methanol. Low-energy spans (25.6, 22.1, and 20.6 kcal/mol) are achieved, indicating that CO can be hydrogenated into methan…

CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Pt functionalized Hf-UiO-67 versus Zr-UiO-67.

Sustainable methanol formation from CO2/H2 is potentially a key process in the post-fossil chemical industry. In this study, Hf- and Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with UiO-67 topology, functionalized with Pt nanoparticles, have been tested for CO2 hydrogenation at 30 bar and 170-240°C. The highest methanol formation rate, 14 molmethanol molPt-1 h-1, was obtained over a Hf-based catalyst, compared with the maximum of 6.2 molmethanol molPt-1 h-1 for the best Zr-based analogue. However, changing the node metal did not significantly affect product distribution or apparent activa…
