Foliar application of nitrates limits lead uptake by Cucumis sativus L. plants.

Lead is a toxic heavy metal, which accumulates in the soil and is readily absorbed by plant roots. The uptake of toxic elements by crops is a serious threat to human health. For this reason, it is important to prevent the incorporation of heavy metals into the food chain. Our previous study showed that foliar application of calcium nitrate reduces the intensity of lead uptake by different plant species. A significant decrease in metal concentration was observed both in the roots and in the shoots of three crops: tomato, cucumber, and flax. The present research investigated the mechanism for li

Spatial analysis of uptake and accumulation of metalaxyl, spirotetramat, and spirotetramat-enol in maize at the micrometer scale using HPLC-HRMS and MALDI-MSI.

Plant protection products (PPPs) are applied on a global scale in vast quantities, which results in elevated concentrations of active ingredients in the soil pore water. Depending on their fate, these PPPs have the potential to pose a threat to the environment and surrounding ecosystems. PPPs that are dissolved in the soil pore water are available for uptake by crop roots, which can lead to bioaccumulation in different plant parts, depending on the characteristics of the PPPs used. The quantity of the active ingredients absorbed and the fate of these substances within the plant are contingent

The adaptation strategy of Astragalus mongholicus shoots to the root Fe2+ deficiency and its strong stimulating effect on glucoliquiritin apioside accumulation.

Iron is an essential micronutrient. However, nearly 40 % of arable land worldwide suffers from iron deficiency. In this study, the adaptation of shoots to root Fe2+ deficiency was investigated using hydroponically grown Astragalus mongholicus, a widely cultivated medicinal plant. The root Fe2+ deficiency significantly inhibited the plants' growth and the contents of Fe, Mo, as well as 10 metabolites, including -isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, and nepitrin, which have reported anti-inflammatory activities. The root Fe2+ deficiency promoted the contents of Ca, Mg, K, Zn, Mn, and 12 metabolites, amon

Biological gibberellin instigated phytoremediation of diclofenac by Atriplexlentiformis.

Pharmaceutical active compounds such as diclofenac (DCF) pose serious risks to aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, the development of safe and inexpensive phytoremediation strategies is essential. This study assessed the effect of foliar-applied biological gibberellin (BG; 0, 50, 100, and 150 mg L-1), produced by Fusarium proliferatum, on the remediation capacity of Atriplex lentiformis halophyte grown hydroponically under DCF contamination (0, 15, and 30 μg L-1). A. lentiformis effectively removed DCF from the medium, while BG implementation further boosted the DCF removal efficiency, bioaccumulat

Oryza sativa iron regulated transporter 1 (OsIRT1) and OsIRT2 are involved in ferrous iron uptake in rice.

Iron (Fe) acquisition from soil is necessary for the normal growth and development of plants. OsIRT1 and OsIRT2 are induced by Fe deficiency; however, it remains unknown if they are required for Fe acquisition due to lack of their loss-of-function mutants. Here, we characterized the function of OsIRT1 and OsIRT2. We found that both OsIRT1 and OsIRT2 could rescue the deficiency symptoms of Arabidopsis Atirt1 when they were driven by the CaMV35S promoter. The CRISPR-Cas9 technology was employed to generate various mutants, Osirt1, Osirt2, and Osirt1/Osirt2. Under hydroponic growth conditions wit

Utilization of residues from microalgal industries for agricultural practices: A comprehensive review.

Global consumptions of fertilizers and freshwater have been continuously growing due to increased food demand, leading to great concerns on food security. Bio-based resilient nutrient resources such as microalgae-derived waste biomass and wastewater have gained great attention as alternative fertilizer resources because they contain key nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), organic compounds (acting as soil conditioner, growth stimulators), and micronutrients. Thus, microalgae-derived solid and liquid fertilizers have great potential in promoting plant growth in soil and/or hydroponic farming,

Symbiotic Fungus Serendipita indica as a Natural Bioenhancer Against Cadmium Toxicity in Chinese Cabbage.

Heavy metal toxicity, particularly cadmium (Cd), poses a growing threat to agriculture and human health due to its persistence and high solubility, which facilitates its entry into the food chain. Among the strategies proposed to reduce Cd toxicity in plants and the environment, the use of beneficial microorganisms, such as endophytic fungi, has gained attention due to its effectiveness and eco-friendliness. This study investigates the potential of the root-colonizing fungus Serendipita indica (formerly Piriformospora indica) to mitigate cadmium (Cd) stress in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.

Phosphorus removal from municipal wastewater using calcium/iron oxide composites: Adsorption efficiency and impact on plant growth.

Phosphate minerals are crucial for the production of fertilizers, but limited availability does not meet the growing agricultural demand. At the same time, the discharge of phosphorus by municipal wastewater treatment plants leads to eutrophication. Removal and recovery of phosphorus from wastewater can both provide nutrients to agriculture and decrease eutrophication. This research aims to evaluate phosphorus removal from municipal wastewater in Latvia by mineral-based calcium/iron composites and examine spent oxides' phytotoxic effect on plant growth. Two CaFeOxides from Latvian earth pigmen

Indole-3-acetaldoxime delays root iron-deficiency responses and modify auxin homeostasis in Medicago truncatula.

Iron (Fe) is an essential plant micronutrient, being a major limiting growth factor in calcareous soils. To increase Fe uptake, plants induce lateral roots growth, the expression of a Fe(III)-chelate reductase (FCR), a Fe(II)-transporter and a H+-ATPase and the secretion of flavins. Furthermore, auxin hormone family is involved in the Fe-deficiency responses but the action mechanism remains elusive. In this work, we evaluated the effect of the auxin-precursor indole-3-acetaldoxime (IAOx) on hydroponically grown Medicago truncatula plants under different Fe conditions. Upon 4-days of Fe starvat

Comparison of Salt Stress Tolerance among Two Leaf and Six Grain Cultivars of Amaranthus cruentus L.

Amaranths (Amaranthus L.) are multi-use crop species renowned for their nutritional quality and their tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Since the soil salinity of croplands is a growing problem worldwide, we tested the salinity tolerance of six grain and two leaf cultivars of Amaranthus cruentus L. The plants were grown for 53 days under hydroponic conditions at 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl. We investigated the growth rate, photosynthetic activity, mineral content, pigments and biochemical compounds involved in oxidative stress. Although 100 mM NaCl always decreased biomass production, we hig

Amino Acid Supplementation as a Biostimulant in Medical Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) Plant Nutrition.

There is growing evidence to support the involvement of nutrients and biostimulants in plant secondary metabolism. Therefore, this study evaluated the potential of amino acid-based supplements that can influence different hydroponic nutrient cycles (systems) to enhance the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of medical cannabis plants. The results demonstrate that amino acid biostimulation significantly affected ion levels in different plant tissues (the "ionome"), increasing nitrogen and sulfur content but reducing calcium and iron content in both nutrient cycles. A significantly higher accumula

Comparative effects of sodium hydrosulfide and proline on functional repair in rice chloroplast through the D1 protein and thioredoxin system under simulated thiocyanate pollution.

Various environmental contaminants can find their way to enter plant cells and disturb and/or damage the essential components of PSII repair cycle in chloroplast, thereby resulting in dysfunction of chloroplast. In the current research, a microcosm hydroponic experiment was set up to evaluate the comparative effects of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS)- and proline (Pro)-mediated functional repairing of chloroplast in rice plants under SCN- stress. Our results displayed that when exposed to environmental realistic SCN- concentrations (24-300 mg L-1), foist significant (p < 0.05) gene-dose repercussio

Application of multivariate analysis to assess stress by Cd, Pb and Al in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) using caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total dry mass in response.

Basil is an edible, aromatic plant, which makes the study of the ecotoxicity of metals in plant metabolism relevant. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of metals, aluminum, lead, and cadmium, in the synthesis of phenolic compounds and in the dry mass of basil plants (O. basilicum L.) grown in a hydroponic system. The plants were subjected to four different concentrations of cadmium (0.2, 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 mmol L-1), lead and aluminum (0.04, 0.08, 0.12, and 0.16 mmol L-1), and compared with the control. After desiccation of the plant material, the total dry

Root Silicon Addition Induces Fe Deficiency in Cucumber Plants, but Facilitates Their Recovery After Fe Resupply. A Comparison With Si Foliar Sprays.

Silicon has not been cataloged as an essential element for higher plants. However, it has shown beneficial effects on many crops, especially under abiotic and biotic stresses. Silicon fertilization was evaluated for the first time on plants exposed to fluctuations in an Fe regime (Fe sufficiency followed by Fe deficiency and, in turn, by Fe resupply). Root and foliar Si applications were compared using cucumber plants that were hydroponically grown in a growth chamber under different Fe nutritional statuses and Si applied either to the roots or to the shoots. The SPAD index, Fe, and Mn concent

Cell wall: An important medium regulating the aggregation of quantum dots in maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings.

Quantum dots (QDs) find various applications in many fields, leading to increasing concerns regarding their uptake and subsequent interaction with plant body. Cell wall (CW), serving as a first target place that interacts with xenobiotic substances into plant body, its role in regulating the QDs cellular uptake needs to be explored. In the present study, maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings were hydroponically exposed to PEG-COOH-CdS/ZnS QDs (QDs-PEG-COOH) and MPA-CdS/ZnS QDs (QDs-MPA) functionalized with negatively charged and neutral coatings, respectively. Uptake rate of QDs-PEG-COOH was approxima

Zn stress facilitates nitrate transporter 1.1-mediated nitrate uptake aggravating Zn accumulation in Arabidopsis plants.

Describing the mechanisms of zinc (Zn) accumulation in plants is essential to counteract the effects of excessive Zn uptake in crops grown in contaminated soils. Increasing evidence suggests that there is a positive correlation between nitrate supply and Zn accumulation in plants. However, the role of the primary nitrate transporter NRT1.1 in Zn accumulation in plants remains unknown. In this study, a Zn stress-induced increase in nitrate uptake and an increase in NRT1.1 protein levels in wild-type (Col-0) Arabidopsis plants were measured using microelectrode ion flux and green fluorescent pro
