Effect of the juvenile hormone on the development of the mandibular gland in workers' pupae of Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera, Apidae).

Insect mandibular glands are exocrine organs that produce chemical substances known as pheromones that play an important role in intra-specific communication of insects. The mandibular glands of Apis mellifera, which are more highly developed in queens than in workers, present caste-specific polymorphism which seems to be regulated by the juvenile hormone (JH). These glands develop at the pupation stage, during which the titer of JH is higher in queens. In spite of this observation, application recounted here of juvenile hormone on 5th-instar workers' larvae of Apis mellifera did not produce a

Evaluation of field propagation of Muscidifurax zaraptor (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) for control of flies associated with confined beef cattle.

The parasitic wasp Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & Legner was mass-reared in the field to control house flies, Musca domestica L., on two Nebraska beef cattle confinements. About 50,000 freeze-killed house fly pupae were exposed to a single release of M. zaraptor in the field. Placement of six additional cohorts of 50,000 freeze-killed pupae at the release sites at 2-wk intervals resulted in a mean parasite emergence of 56.4% over the study period. Mean fly mortality of 37.3 and 25.9% occurred in sentinel pupae placed around the perimeter of two release sites, compared with 3.9% for two control

Allergens in hymenoptera venom. V. Identification of some of the enzymes and demonstration of multiple allergens in yellow jacket venom.

Yellow jacket venom (YJV) contains acid phosphatase, hyaluronidase and phospholipase but neither allergen C nor melittin as bee venom (BV). YJV enzymes did not cross react with antisera to BV enzymes. YJV was separated into seven fractions, all of which had some activity in RAST. Sera were found specific for the fractions containing phospholipase and acid phosphatase. The other three protein fractions also exhibited substantial RAST activity, suggesting there are at least five allergens in YJV.

Expression and function of the vitellogenin receptor in the hypopharyngeal glands of the honey bee Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) workers.

The vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is essential for the uptake and transport of the yolk precursor, vitellogenin (Vg). Vg is synthesized in the fat body, released in the hemolymph, and absorbed in the ovaries, via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Besides its important role in the reproductive pathway, Vg occurs in nonreproductive worker honey bee, suggesting its participation in other pathways. The objective was to verify if the VgR occurs in the hypopharyngeal glands of Apis mellifera workers and how Vg is internalized by these cells. VgR occurrence in the hypopharyngeal glands was evaluated by qP

Spinosad-mediated effects on survival, overall group activity and the midgut of workers of Partamona helleri (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Populations of stingless bees have declined around the world and pesticides have been indicated as one of the possible causes of this decrease. Spinosad, which is synthesized from the fermentation process produced by the soil actinomycete Saccharopolyspora spinosa, is one of the most used bioinsecticides today. This study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of spinosad (formulation) on survival, general group activity and the processes of autophagy, apoptosis and oxidative stress in two organs (midgut and brain) of workers of Partamona helleri, after 24 h of oral exposure. Workers were oral

On the Adult Behavioral Repertoire of the Sawfly Perreyia flavipes Konow, 1899 (Hymenoptera: Pergidae): Movement, Mating, and Thanatosis.

Perreyia flavipes Konow, 1899 (Pergidae: Perreyinae) is a sawfly species with gregarious larvae commonly found in open areas in southern Brazil through Uruguay and northern Argentina. The combination of highly gregarious larvae with the production of a variety of toxins in P. flavipes has led to severe cases of intoxication in a variety of livestock species. Over the years, considerable information was discovered on the larval natural history of P. flavipes; however, virtually nothing is known about the adult behavior, particularly because of its short life-span. In this study, we report on th

Stings of the Ant Wasmannia auropunctata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) as Cause of Punctate Corneal Lesions in Humans and Other Animals.

Numerous researchers have observed a form of punctate corneal lesions causing leukomas (corneal opacities) in humans, domestic animals, and wild animals in different parts of the world. This condition has been reported under different names, including West Indian (or Caribbean) punctate keratopathy, West Indian dots, tropical punctate keratopathy, Rice's keratopathy, Florida keratopathy, and Florida spots. Many of these cases, appear to have a common cause, the stings of a small red ant, Wasmannia auropunctata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), originally from the Neotropics, but spread to other parts…

Added sensitivity of component-resolved diagnosis in hymenoptera venom-allergic patients with elevated serum tryptase and/or mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis caused by hymenoptera venom allergy is associated with elevation of baseline serum tryptase (sBT) and/or mastocytosis in about 5% of patients. Up to now, no information has become available on single venom allergen sIgE reactivity and the usefulness of component-resolved approaches to diagnose this high-risk patient group. To address the component-resolved sIgE sensitization pattern and diagnostic sensitivity in hymenoptera venom-allergic patients with elevated sBT levels and/or mastocytosis, a panel of yellow jacket and honeybee venom allergens was applied on a widely …

The Basophil Activation Test Is Not a Useful Screening Tool for Hymenoptera Venom-Related Anaphylaxis in Patients with Systemic Mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) patients are at a high risk for anaphylaxis, with Hymenoptera as the main culprit. A screening instrument to identify which patients are sensitized to Hymenoptera before they experience anaphylaxis would therefore be of great value. The basophil activation test (BAT) is proposed as a possible tool for diagnosing Hymenoptera venom-related allergy (HVA), especially in patients in whom conventional allergy tests yield contradictory results. METHODS: We included outpatients with SM, according to WHO criteria, from September 2011 to January 2012. Next, to obt…

Influence of weeds on Argentine ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and obscure mealybug (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) in a central California vineyard.

Obscure mealybug is a pest of grapes in the cool climate regions of coastal California, is found on some vineyard weeds, and is tended by the Argentine ant. A study was conducted at a vineyard in Arroyo Grande, CA, to evaluate the impact of weeds on ant activity on grapevines, and the role that ants and weeds have on obscure mealybug infestation in grape clusters. The incidence of the fungus Botrytis cinerea was recorded as well. Treatments were weed exclusion versus the presence of weeds, and ant exclusion versus the presence of ants. Ant activity was evaluated weekly using sugar-based monito

Sublethal and transgenerational effects of insecticides in developing Trichogramma galloi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) : toxicity of insecticides to Trichogramma galloi.

This study assessed the transgenerational effects of insecticides in developing Trichogramma galloi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Laboratory bioassays were performed in which five insecticides were sprayed on egg-larval, pre-pupal and pupal stages of the parasitoid. The interaction between insecticides and development stages of the parasitoid was not significant for the rate of F0 emergence. All insecticides significantly reduced the emergence of wasps, with the lowest emergence observed when they were applied to the pupal stage. For the sex ratio, only spinosad applied to the pre-pupal st…

Immunotherapy with Hymenoptera venoms. Position paper of the Working Group on Immunotherapy of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Immunotherapy with Hymenoptera venoms is widely used throughout the world and is accepted as an effective treatment for most patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy. There are, however, still some unresolved problems with this form of treatment. At present there is no definite test which makes it possible to identify patients at risk - and thus candidates for immunotherapy - unequivocally. On the basis of prospective studies on the natural history of Hymenoptera allergy, venom immunotherapy is indicated in adults with severe systemic anaphylaxis. It is usually not necessary in patients with la…

A multigene phylogeny of Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) supports a revised higher-level classification and reveals host-associated diversification.

CONTEXT: The subfamily Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) comprises specialised koinobiont endoparasitoids of aphids, many of which are widely used as biological control agents. However, higher-level relationships and taxonomic ranks within Aphidiinae remain contentious. AIMS: We aimed to reconstruct the higher-level phylogeny of Aphidiinae, reassess its tribal and subtribal classification using molecular and morphological evidence, and examine whether its evolutionary diversification was temporally associated with major ecological transitions in aphid lineages. TAXON: Aphidiinae Haliday, …

Insecticidal and repellent activity of cinnamic acid derivatives: investigating alternative products to control imported fire ants (Formicidae: Hymenoptera).

Trans-cinnamic acid and its derivatives were investigated against Solenopsis invicta Buren (RIFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel (BIFA), and reproductively functional hybrid (HIFA) for their repellency and toxicity. A range of serial concentrations starting from 156 µg/g to the failure of treatments were evaluated. Removal of treated sand in a digging bioassay was used as the criterion for repellency. Treatments were considered active until the removal of treated sand became similar to that in the ethanol control. Based on sand removal, trans-cinnamic acid, benzyl cinnamate and phenethyl cinnamate

Losing a non-native, gaining an endemic: Description of Camponotus (Myrmentoma) limbouros sp. nov. (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) from Cyprus.

The ever-growing movement of people and goods across the world has resulted in the translocation of tens of thousands of species outside their native ranges, including more than 500 species of ants. However, the native ranges of some non-native species are still unclear and further research using molecular tools is needed. Situated in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus hosts a high percentage of both endemic and non-native ant taxa, with the latter species posing a threat to this native biodiversity, society, and the economy. The lack of up-to-date taxonomic revisions for many genera and knowle

Perfluorooctanoic acid exposure induced behavioral and physiological toxicity in Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) without reducing interspecific competitive dominance.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a widespread environmental contaminant. Although its toxicity to aquatic organisms is well known, research on terrestrial arthropods-especially soil-dwelling ants-remains limited. The red imported fire ant (RIFA), (Solenopsis invicta Buren) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), frequently inhabits soil and is broadly distributed, making it likely to encounter PFOA. This study examined the behavioral, lethal, and physiological effects of PFOA on large and medium RIFA workers. Contact and stomach toxicity experiments showed that PFOA significantly reduced aggregation, climb…

Nesting Biology of Megachile (Chrysosarus) jenseni (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) in Two Contrasting Pampean Agroecosystems: A Potential Pollinator for Alfalfa?

Several crops depend on both managed and wild bees to produce fruits and/or seeds, and the efficiency of numerous wild bees is higher than that of some managed species. Therefore, knowing and understanding the required resources for wild bees could enabled the establishment of management practices to increase their populations. Here, we provide information about the nesting biology of Megachile (Chrysosarus) jenseni, a Faboideae-specialist bee species. Based on observations from two populations occurring in contrasting agroecosystems, this bivoltine species showed common behavioral features sh
