Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, allergy and sports in children.

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is characterized by the narrowing of airways during or after physical activity, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Distinguishing between EIB and exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is essential, given their divergent therapeutic and prognostic considerations. EIB has been increasingly recognized as a significant concern in pediatric athletes. Moreover, studies indicate a noteworthy prevalence of EIB in children with atopic predispositions, unveiling a potential link between allergic sensitivities and exercise-induced r

Association between helminth infection and allergic disorders among children in Batu, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Helminths are potent immunomodulators and in their chronic infection state they may protect against allergy-related disease and atopy. However, they are also known for inducing allergic conditions. This study aimed to assess the association between helminths,  atopy and allergic conditions. METHODS: A total of 461 school children participated in this cross-sectional study. Data on allergic symptoms and a range of confounding variables was gathered from parents via an interviewer-led questionnaire. Skin sensitization to house dust mite and cockroaches was analyzed, and a stool samp

Engineered Nanomaterials and Type I Allergic Hypersensitivity Reactions.

Type I allergic hypersensitivity disorders (atopy) including asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and food allergy are on the rise in developed and developing countries. Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) span a large spectrum of material compositions including carbonic, metals, polymers, lipid-based, proteins, and peptides and are being utilized in a wide range of industries including healthcare and pharmaceuticals, electronics, construction, and food industry, and yet, regulations for the use of ENMs in consumer products are largely lacking. Prior evidence has demonstrated the potentia

Food Avoidance Diets for Dermatitis.

Food allergy is relatively common in both children and adults, and its prevalence is increasing. Early exposure of food allergens onto skin with an impaired epidermal barrier predisposes to sensitization and prevents the development of oral tolerance. While immediate-type food allergies are well described, less is known about delayed-type food allergies manifesting as dermatitis. This is due, in part, to limitations with current diagnostic testing for delayed-type food allergy, including atopy patch testing. We conducted a systematic review of food avoidance diets in delayed-type food allergie

A report of a rare immediate reaction after ingestion of acetaminophen.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen hypersensitivity is rare and, when seen, is usually in association with sensitivity to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. METHODS: This is a case report of an immediate reaction to acetaminophen, confirmed by a drug challenge, in a subject who tolerated ibuprofen. RESULTS: After an oral challenge with 50 mg of acetaminophen, the subject had generalized pruritus, urticaria, and dyspnea. CONCLUSIONS: This patient demonstrates a rare but potentially severe reaction to acetaminophen that may occur in patients who are not otherwise sensitive to other nonsteroidal ant

[Reactions to food].

Adverse reactions to food occur in about 1-2% of the population, but are reported more frequently by patients. Most reactions to food are not caused by allergy. IgE-mediated food reactions are well known and of major clinical significance owing to their potentially dangerous, even life-threatening character. Adverse reactions to food can also be caused by immunological mechanisms other than IgE-mediated reactions such as, enzyme deficiencies, active pharmacological substances in food and psychological mechanisms. Double-blind provocation is the only way to diagnose a positive reaction to a foo

Low Cross-Reactivity Between Cisplatin and Other Platinum Salts.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions to platinum salts (PS) (cisplatin [CI], carboplatin [CA], and oxaliplatin [OX]) can be severe and their incidence is increasing due to their widespread use in cancer treatment. OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of cross-reactivity between PS and whether CI can be administered without prior allergy testing in patients with a history of CA or OX hypersensitivity. METHODS: From September 2002 to April 2016, patients with suspected immediate PS hypersensitivity were tested and cross-reactivity between the 3 PS was evaluated. We then studied patients who were

[Indications for rapid readout skin tests].

Rapid readout skin tests are indicated in the investigation of antigens involved immediate reactions, whether or not IgE-mediated. They are thus indicated in the exploration of some immediate reactions in allergology-dermatology reactions such as immunological contact urticaria (latex allergy for example) and protein contact dermatitis.

Severe hypersensitivity reactions to biological drugs in children with rheumatic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) to biologic drugs (BD) may limit their use in children with rheumatic diseases. We aimed to analyze the incidence and clinical characteristics of immediate type I (IgE/non-IgE) hypersensitivity reactions to BD and the risk factors for these reactions. METHODS: Children with rheumatic diseases using BD who were evaluated in the pediatric allergy department for possible drug hypersensitivity reaction (DHR) due to BD or any other drug were included in the study. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-eight children (49.2% boys; 14.6 years [9.9-16.9 years] w

Cutaneous hypersensitivity responses to Rhipicephalus tick larval antigens in pre-sensitized cattle.

Nguni cattle are known to be more resistant to ticks than Bonsmara cattle, even if the immunological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are not fully understood. Cutaneous hypersensitivity responses to unfed larval extracts (ULE) of the ticks Rhipicephalus decoloratus and Rhipicephalus microplus were investigated in Nguni and Bonsmara cattle to improve knowledge on the immunity to ticks. Hypersensitivity reactions were induced by intradermal inoculation of 0.1ml of ULE of R. decoloratus and R. microplus ticks (50μg protein) in the right and left ear, respectively, of 8-9-month-old Ngun

Delayed Drug Hypersensitivity Reactions: Molecular Recognition, Genetic Susceptibility, and Immune Mediators.

Drug hypersensitivity reactions are classified into immediate and delayed types, according to the onset time. In contrast to the immediate type, delayed drug hypersensitivity mainly involves T lymphocyte recognition of the drug antigens and cell activation. The clinical presentations of such hypersensitivity are various and range from mild reactions (e.g., maculopapular exanthema (MPE) and fixed drug eruption (FDE)), to drug-induced liver injury (DILI) and severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), drug reaction with eosi
