BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is the preferred treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) of colorectal carcinoma. Patients with positive lymph node status have worse survival after CRS-HIPEC, which is probably due to higher rates of systemic failure. In this study, we analysed the effect of administration and timing of systemic chemotherapy on the outcome of lymph node positive colorectal carcinoma patients treated with CRS-HIPEC.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective database was reviewed to identify lymph node positive patients w

BACKGROUND: There is ongoing controversy concerning the indications and benefits of early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC) following cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei. The main contra-indications preventing wide-spread use of EPIC are reports of an increased postoperative morbidity with no clear evidence of oncological benefit. This paper reports a single high volume institution experience with EPIC over a 25-year period.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of a single institution p

BACKGROUND: With a 5-year overall survival of less than 5%, colorectal peritoneal metastasis (CPM) patients are often managed with palliative chemotherapy (CTx). In the past few decades, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been introduced as a possible curative treatment for highly selective CPM patients. We share our experience of CRS and HIPEC given the unique characteristics of the medical system and the benefit of CRS and HIPEC in palliative setting.
METHODS: From April 2017 to October 2021, CPM patients who underwent CRS and HIPEC were an

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has become an established treatment for selected patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) from colorectal, ovarian, and gastric cancers, as well as for certain primary peritoneal tumors such as pseudomyxoma peritonei. However, evidence supporting its role in other uncommon indications remains limited, largely due to the rarity and heterogeneity of these malignancies and the absence of standardized treatment protocols. Understanding the potential survival benefit and safety profile of CRS + H

BACKGROUND: This study describes surgical and quality of life outcomes in patients with peritoneal malignancy treated by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) alone compared with a subgroup treated with CRS and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
METHODS: Peritoneal malignancy patients undergoing surgery between 2017 and 2023 were included. The cohort was divided into patients treated by CRS and HIPEC and those treated by CRS without HIPEC (including CRS only or maximal tumour debulking (MTB)). Main outcomes included surgical outcomes, survival, and quality of life. Groups were compared

The objective is to evaluate whether gastric cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis can benefit from surgery through a comprehensive analysis of different clinical factors and perioperative treatment methods. A total of 135 gastric cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis were treated with Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Patients were divided into either training group (without surgery, n = 90) or test group (with surgery, n = 45). A nomogram was constructed based on significant prognostic factors. The patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups using a nomogr

In stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC), peritoneal metastasis is associated with a poor prognosis. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is an effective treatment option that offers survival benefits in patients with peritoneal metastatic CRC. For over the past several decades, a multitude of studies have been conducted on CRS and HIPEC for peritoneal metastatic diseases, and research in this area is ongoing. Proper patient selection and a meticulous preoperative assessment are crucial for achieving successful postoperative outcomes. The completeness

BACKGROUND: The peritoneum is a common metastatic site of colorectal cancer (CRC) and associated with worse oncological outcomes. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) has been shown to improve outcomes in selected patients. Studies have demonstrated significant difference in survival of patients with primary colon and rectal tumors both in local and in metastatic setting; but only few assessed outcomes of CRS/HIPEC for rectal and colon tumors. We studied the perioperative and oncological outcomes of patients undergoing CRS/HIPEC for rectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is increasingly being used in patients with stage III ovarian cancer undergoing interval cytoreductive surgery (CRS). It is uncertain whether routine postoperative admission to a critical care setting after CRS-HIPEC is necessary. This study aims to estimate the incidence of patients requiring critical care, and to create a prediction model to identify patients who may forego admission to a critical care setting.
METHODS: We analyzed 154 patients with primary ovarian cancer undergoing interval CRS-HIPEC at two Dutch centers betwe

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery in combination with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy has been established as a novel treatment approach for peritoneal sarcomatosis. Despite promising clinical reports, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding optimal drug usage and local effects. Therefore, we intended to establish a murine animal model for further evaluation.
PROCEDURE: Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma cells were xenotransplanted into NOD/LtSz-scid IL2Rγnullmice (n = 100). The mice received a continuous intraperitoneal lavage with isotonic saline solution as control or with cisplatin

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has shown that underinsured patients are at increased risk of worse health outcomes compared with insured patients. Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is largely performed at highly specialized cancer centers and may pose challenges for the underinsured. This study investigates surgical outcomes following CRS-HIPEC for insured and underinsured patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 125 patients undergoing CRS-HIPEC between 2013 and 2019. Patients were ca

BACKGROUND: CRS with HIPEC is a complex operation that has shown survival benefit in patients with a variety of primary and metastatic peritoneal surface malignancies. While optimal oncologic and perioperative outcomes have been defined by expert consensus and demonstrated at university-affiliated, academic centers, similar results have never been presented from a non-university-affiliated, community center in the literature to date.
METHODS: All cases of CRS with HIPEC performed at a non-university-affiliated, community center were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Oncologic and periope

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) poses a widely used and accepted treatment option for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of gastrointestinal tumors. In contrast to the well-described risks and complications of intravenous cytostatic drugs, literature offers only scarce information of serious complications following HIPEC. To our knowledge no other description of rapid progressive pulmonary hypertension (PH) and consecutive respiratory failure following HIPEC have been described in current literature.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal carcinomatosis has been traditionally considered a rapidly lethal disease and consequently managed by merely palliative options. In the last decade, the clinical interest in the condition has increased because encouraging results have been reported in association with a new treatment strategy that combines cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Relatively high rates of severe complications are generally associated to this complex procedure. Our aim was to analyze treatment-related morbidity in our institutional initial experience.

AIM: The optimal strategy for intravenous (IV) fluid management during administration of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is unclear. In this prospective study we describe the use of a LiDCOrapid™ (LiDCO, Cambridge, UK) cardiac output monitor to guide IV fluid management during cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with HIPEC. The aim of this study was to determine whether cardiac output monitoring will allow close maintenance of physiological parameters during the HIPEC phase.
METHOD: Twenty-five patients who underwent CRS combined with HIPEC were included in the study. Intra-operativ
