Ninety-five porcine pancreases were incubated at temperatures of 0, 20, or 37 degrees C for periods of 1-32 h. After incubation at 37 degrees C for 2-4 h, islet cells retain their morphologic and functional integrity, whereas acinar cells become necrotic. Because of acinar destruction, the pancreas also becomes soft and amenable to mechanical separation with a simple new device. Temperature-controlled incubation therefore may be a useful first step in the isolation of islet cells from large animal pancreases.

To evaluate the role of atmosphere of incubation in the detection of clinically important bacteremia and fungemia in adults, we compared the yield of microorganisms from 10,541 paired 5-ml samples of blood incubated aerobically and anaerobically. The medium, supplemented peptone broth (SPB) with 0.03% sodium polyanetholesulfonate, and the ratio of blood to broth (1:10) were the same for all cultures. Only cultures with adequate blood samples (greater than or equal to 80% of stated volume) were compared statistically. More fungi (P less than 10(-7) ) grew in continuously vented bottles of SPB.

The concentrations of prolactin and LH were measured in the plasma of male and female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) during the breeding cycle. Prolactin concentrations were low during courtship and early incubation but increased markedly (P less than 0.01 in both sexes) between days 7 and 15 of incubation, during the period of rapid growth of the crop sac. Levels remained raised for 4 days after the young had hatched but then declined as the crop sacs gradually regressed. Two patients in two families had hereditary spherocytosis but lacked a population of RBCs with increased osmotic fragility after incubation. Incubation of brain cortex slices in the presence of glucose resulted in the permeation of about 65% of [14C] mescaline into slices. Of this, about one-third radioactivity was bound with nuclei, mitochondria, microsomes, and ribosomes. Dialysis of subcellular fractions did not markedly reduce the amounts of radioactivity bound to the fractions. The permeation into slices and the binding of mescaline to subcellular fractions were fairly time-dependent, but were inhibited by the presence of potassium cyanide, or by the absence of glucose and by heating to 80 degrees C for 1 min.

In February 2024, a 22-year-old Japanese resident of Osaka Prefecture was diagnosed with measles in the PCR test. He had flown from Dubai to Osaka Kansai International Airport.
