Do dentists have sufficient information about their patients to control infection?

This study examined dentists' knowledge of infection control, what dentists say they do to control infection, and what procedures they actually take to prevent the transmission of disease. A professional actor, obviously in need of dental care and playing the part of a patient, was sent to three groups of randomly selected dentists in general practice. The dentists were uninformed subjects who were debriefed about the research immediately after their part in the experiment was completed. The study found that dentists apparently know what they should do to protect themselves from contamination.…

Surgical Site Infection Rates in Seven Cities in Vietnam: Findings of the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in lower-income countries. This is the first study to report the results of surveillance on SSI stratified by surgical procedure in seven Vietnamese cities. METHODS: This was a prospective, active SSI surveillance study conducted from November 2008-December 2010 in seven hospitals using the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions and methods. Surgical procedures (SPs) were classified into 26 types according to the Internatio

Strict infection control leads to low incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection over 20 years.

OBJECTIVE: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a worldwide issue associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Multiple infection control (IC) approaches have been tested to control its spread; however, the success of the majority of trials has been short-lived and many efforts have failed. We report the long-term success of MRSA control from a prospective observational study over 20 years. SETTING: University Hospital Basel is a large tertiary care center with a median bed capacity of 855 and 5 intensive care units (ICUs); currently, the facility has >32,000 admissio…

[Wound infection and infection-promoting factors in breast cancer surgery -- a prospective multicenter study on quality control].

INTRODUCTION: The quality of treatment of cancer of the female breast is reflected not only in such parameters as local recurrence rate and … id of a questionnaire. The definition of wound infection was based on the criteria of the "Hospital Infection Control Practice Advisory Committee". RESULTS: The overall WIR was 4.5 % (n = 65). 21 (32 %) of the wound infections (WI) were diagnosed exclusively on a clinical basis without establishing the responsible pathogens. In 44 (68 %) of the WI, a search for th …

Methanolic plant extracts: emerging biotherapeutic alternatives for animal wound infection control.

Wound infections caused by bacterial pathogens remain a major health concern, often delaying tissue repair and increasing morbidity. This study evaluated the phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of methanolic leaf extracts from Aloe vera, Lawsonia inermis, Azadirachta indica, Curcuma longa, and Achyranthes aspera as potential natural alternatives for managing wound-associated infections. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenolics, saponins, and steroids in all extracts, with L. inermis and C. longa showing particularly high levels

Risks for Childhood Bone and Joint Infection: A Case Control Study.

AIM: Despite status as a high-income nation, New Zealand (NZ) experiences the second highest rate of childhood bone and joint infection (BJI) globally with a disproportionate burden in Māori and Pacific children. This study aims to identify potentially modifiable risk factors for childhood BJI. METHODS: An age and ethnicity matched case-control design was utilised to compare acute cases of BJI with healthy controls recruited from orthopaedic fracture clinics. Cases were </= 15 years hospitalised because of acute haematogenous osteomyelitis or septic arthritis across multiple centres in the No

Multiple roles of humoral responses in the control of HIV infection.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spontaneous control of HIV replication has been primarily associated with cellular immune responses. However, it remains multifactorial, and viral determinants, innate and humoral immune responses could be additional relevant contributors. Furthermore, posttreatment control cases reveal new roles for humoral responses. This review describes the direct, indirect and passive roles of humoral responses in HIV control. RECENT FINDINGS: New evidence supports the role of the humoral responses in the natural control of HIV. Indeed, a strong association has been reported between po

Assessment of residual contamination on dental instruments after infection control practices.

This study aimed to compare and assess residual microorganisms and organic materials on selected dental instruments after practicing two infection control methods, including the standard protocol. Scaler tips (ST) , 3-way syringe tips(3ST) , Bristle brushes(BB) , and Rubber cups(RC) were collected and grouped into Standard (Group S) and Non-standard (Group N) for processing. In ST and 3ST, Group S was cleaned and autoclaved, while Group N was disinfected. For BBs and RCs, Group N was cleaned and autoclaved, and new instruments were used as Group S. To confirm the presence of residual microorga…

Risk factors for HCV infection in Georgia: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a leading cause of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior studies in Georgia identified risk factors such as injection drug use (IDU), tattoos, dental cleanings, medical injections, and blood transfusion. This study explored risk factors associated with HCV seroconversion in Georgia. METHODOLOGY: A case-control study was conducted among adults aged ≥ 18 years. A total of 299 Cases (persons who seroconverted after ≥ 2 screenings) and 436 controls (persons with ≥ 2 negative anti-HCV test results dated 90 to 364 days

Practice and attitudes of infection control staff towards diagnostic stewardship measures.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, diagnostic stewardship has gained importance worldwide as part of antibiotic stewardship and infection control programs. However, the specific involvement of infection control (IC) teams in this area has not been studied. METHOD: A volunteer survey of participants at the 2024 Freiburg Conference on Infection Prevention and Therapy was conducted to assess attitudes and practices regarding diagnostic stewardship. RESULTS: The majority of the 182 participants worked in German hospitals with established IC-committees (91.2%), antibiotic stewardship teams (43.4%), a…

HPV infection and endometrial polyps: insights from a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial polyps are common benign lesions characterized by localized overgrowths of endometrial tissue within the uterine cavity. The etiology and pathogenesis of these polyps remain unclear. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, known for its association with various genital tract conditions, has been investigated concerning endometrial polyps, although research in this area is limited. METHODS: A case-control study involving 62 premenopausal women was conducted, with endometrial polyp cases and control groups matched for age and BMI. Biopsy samples were collected for HPV test

The human Papillomavirus twilight zone - Latency, immune control and subclinical infection.

The incorporation of HPV DNA testing into cervical screening programs has shown that many HPV-positive women are cytologically normal, with HPV-positivity fluctuating throughout life. Such results suggest that papillomaviruses may persist in a latent state after disease clearance, with sporadic recurrence. It appears that virus latency represents a narrow slot in a wider spectrum of subclinical and possibly productive infections. Clinical studies, and animal model infection studies, suggested a key role for host immune surveillance in maintaining such asymptomatic infections, and although infe
