Impaired gap encoding in aged mouse inferior colliculus at moderate but not high stimulus levels.

Age-related deterioration of auditory temporal acuity has been identified as a contributing factor in presbycusis. In the present study, the effects of aging and stimulus level on gap encoding and gap recovery functions were investigated by measuring near-field auditory evoked potentials in the inferior colliculus of eight 3 month old and eight 24 month old CBA/CaJ mice, in response to gap stimuli embedded in broadband noise (40, 60, and 80 dB SPL). Gap encoding was assessed by measuring latencies and amplitudes of peak features of the near-field response, and also with a procedure that calcul

Salicylate and quinine selectively increase spontaneous firing rates in secondary auditory cortex.

This study presents firing rates for simultaneously recorded spontaneous and stimulus driven multi-unit activity in primary auditory cortex (AI), anterior auditory field (AAF) and secondary auditory cortex (AII) in cats before and after application of salicylate or quinine. From 21 cats, in three cortical areas simultaneously, a total of 1533 multi-unit files were obtained. The data suggest (1) that both salicylate and quinine significantly increase spontaneous firing rates in AII, whereas in AI and AAF both quinine and salicylate reduced the spontaneous rate; (2) the effect of both drugs was

Evidence for a glutamatergic pathway from the guinea pig auditory cortex to the inferior colliculus.

We attempt to provide evidence that the projection from the guinea pig auditory cortex (AC) to the inferior colliculus (IC) may contain glutamatergic or GABAergic fibers. Seven days after unilateral AC aspiration, histological studies indicated almost complete AC destruction and preterminal degeneration of fibers and terminal fields in the dorsal cortex (DCIC), external cortex (ECIC), and central nucleus (CNIC) of the IC ipsilateral to the ablated AC. Contralaterally, degeneration appeared in the DCIC. AC ablation depressed the electrically evoked Ca(2+)-dependent release of D-[3H]aspartate (D

Dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus in the rat: concentric organization and tonotopic projection to the inferior colliculus.

A basic principle of organization in auditory centers is the topographic-tonotopic order. Whether this applies to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL), however, is still debated. To clarify this problem, we have utilized the neuroanatomical tracers horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and biotinylated dextran (BD) injected into different regions of the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (CNIC) in the rat. After large injections of HRP that included most of the CNIC, retrogradely labelled neurons were found all across the ipsi- and contralateral DNLL, showing that all parts of thi

Demonstration of Microsurgical Technique and Nuances for the Resection of a Midbrain Tectal Glioma via the Transcollicular Approach: 3-Dimensional Operative Video.

Tectal gliomas are a rare subset of intrinsic brainstem lesions. The microsurgical resection of these lesions remains a major challenge.1,2 Transcollicular approaches on one side, via the superior or inferior colliculi or both, are neurologically well tolerated without obvious or major auditory or oculomotor consequences. However, any postoperative acute visually triggered saccadic abnormalities caused by iatrogenic superior colliculus damage generally resolve during the postoperative period, as other oculomotor structures compensate for these functions in unilateral lesions.  In this surgical

Regionally selective alterations in enzymatic activities and metabolic fluxes during thiamin deficiency.

To further elucidate the molecular basis of the selective damage to various brain regions by thiamin deficiency, changes in enzymatic activities were compared to carbohydrate flux through various pathways from vulnerable (mammillary bodies and inferior colliculi) and nonvulnerable (cochlear nuclei) regions after 11 or 14 days of pyrithiamin-induced thiamin deficiency. After 11 days, large decreases (-43 to -59%) in transketolase (TK) occurred in all 3 regions; 2-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (KGDHC) declined (-45%), but only in mammillary bodies; pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDHC) was unaffected. Transcriptional profile changes caused by noise-induced tinnitus in the cochlear nucleus and inferior colliculus of the rat.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is a prevalent and disabling condition characterized by the perception of sound in the absence of external acoustic stimuli. The hyperactivity of the auditory pathway is a crucial factor in the development of tinnitus. This study aims to examine genetic expression variations in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) and inferior colliculus (IC) following the onset of tinnitus using transcriptomic analysis. The goal is to investigate the relationship between hyperactivity in the DCN and IC. METHODS: To confirm the presence of tinnitus behavior, we utilized the gap pre-pulse i

Speech-evoked auditory brainstem response; electrophysiological evidence of upper brainstem facilitative role on sound lateralization in noise.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sound lateralization/localization is one of the most important auditory processing abilities, which plays approved role in auditory streaming and speech perception in challenging situations like noisy places. In addition to the main role of lower brainstem centers like superior olivary complex in sound lateralization, efferent auditory system effects on improving auditory skills in everyday auditory challenging positions were revealed. This study evaluated noise effects on lateralization scores in correlation with an objective electrophysiologic test (Speech-ABR in noise),

Panicolytic-like effect of µ1-opioid receptor blockade in the inferior colliculus of prey threatened by Crotalus durissus terrificus pit vipers.

BACKGROUND: The endogenous opioid peptide system has been implicated in the neural modulation of fear and anxiety organised by the dorsal midbrain. Furthermore, previous results indicate a fundamental role played by inferior colliculus (IC) opioid mechanisms during the expression of defensive behaviours, but the involvement of the IC µ1-opioid receptor in the modulation of anxiety- and panic attack-related behaviours remains unclear. Using a prey-versus-snake confrontation paradigm, we sought to investigate the effects of µ1-opioid receptor blockade in the IC on the defensive behaviour display

Broad spectrum proteomics analysis of the inferior colliculus following acute hydrogen sulfide exposure.

Acute exposure to high concentrations of H2S causes severe brain injury and long-term neurological disorders, but the mechanisms involved are not known. To better understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in acute H2S-induced neurodegeneration we used a broad-spectrum proteomic analysis approach to identify key molecules and molecular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of acute H2S-induced neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration. Mice were subjected to acute inhalation exposure of up to750 ppm of H2S. H2S induced behavioral deficits and severe lesions including hemorrhage in the

Development of hyperactivity after acoustic trauma in the guinea pig inferior colliculus.

The time of onset of hyperactivity (increased spontaneous firing rates) was investigated by single neuron recording in the inferior colliculus (IC) of guinea pigs subjected to unilateral acoustic trauma (exposure to a loud 10 kHz tone). Hyperactivity was present by 12 h post acoustic trauma whereas data obtained within approximately 4 h of the cessation of acoustic trauma found no evidence of hyperactivity. These data suggest that hyperactivity in the IC begins at some time between 4 and 12 h post trauma and is a relatively rapid plastic event beginning within hours rather than days post cochl

Evaluating the protective role of the olivocochlear bundle against acoustic overexposure in rats by using Fos immunohistochemistry.

Efferent inhibition on the cochlea is suggested as a possible function of the olivocochlear bundle (OCB). Substantial evidence supports the finding that the OCB may protect the inner ear from noise-induced damage. However, there is relatively less known about the effects of noise on the central auditory transmission compared to the effects on the periphery. In the present animal study, two experimental paradigms were designed to analyze the influence of OCB lesion on the central auditory transmission following acoustic overexposure. In order to evaluate the animal's auditory function, its hear

Localizing retrocochlear hearing loss.

PURPOSE: The origin of acute/sudden hearing loss is multifactorial. The association of vestibular symptoms does not necessarily isolate the pathologic condition to the inner ear. The audiogram provides a screen for differentiating conductive from sensorineural loss but often fails to provide more localizing information. METHODS: Three unusual patients with a variety of retrocochlear presentations of hearing loss are presented. Along with conventional auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing, newer auditory tests, including otoacoustic emissions and three-dimensional ABR analysis, can facilit

Distribution of mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus neurons in the reeler mutant mouse.

BACKGROUND: Reeler (gene symbol, rl) is an autosomal recessive mutation occurring in mice and characterized by the abnormal positioning of neurons in the central nervous system. In this mutant, however, the cytoarchitecture of the peripheral nervous system is normal, implying that the reeler genetic locus does not affect migration of neurons in the peripheral system. Mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Me5) neurons are unique in that they are derived from the neural crest like other neurons in the peripheral nervous system, but enter secondarily into the central nervous system. MATERIALS AND ME

Ototoxicity-related changes in GABA immunolabeling within the rat inferior colliculus.

Several studies suggest that hearing loss results in changes in the balance between inhibition and excitation in the inferior colliculus (IC). The IC is an integral nucleus within the auditory brainstem. The majority of ascending pathways from the lateral lemniscus (LL), superior olivary complex (SOC), and cochlear nucleus (CN) synapse in the IC before projecting to the thalamus and cortex. Many of these ascending projections provide inhibitory innervation to neurons within the IC. However, the nature and the distribution of this inhibitory input have only been partially elucidated in the rat.

Duration-sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus of horseshoe bats: adaptations for using CF-FM echolocation pulses.

The present study examines duration-sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) of the least horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus pusillus, from China. In contrast to other bat species tested for duration selectivity so far, echolocation pulses emitted by horseshoe bats are generally longer and composed of a long constant-frequency (CF) component followed by a short downward frequency-modulated (FM) sweep (CF-FM pulse). We used combined CF-FM pulses to analyze the differential effects that these two pulse components had on the duration tuning in neurons of the horseshoe bat's IC. Consistent with r

Influence of sympathetic fibers on noise-induced hearing loss in the chinchilla.

The influence of the sympathetic efferent fibers on cochlear susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss is still an open question. In the current study, we explore the effects of unilateral and bilateral Superior Cervical Ganglion (SCG) ablation in the chinchilla on hearing loss from noise exposure, as measured with inferior colliculus (IC) evoked potentials, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), and outer hair cell (OHC) loss. The SCG was isolated at the level of the bifurcation of the carotid artery and removed unilaterally in 15 chinchillas. Another eight chinchillas underwent

Inferior colliculus unitary activity in wakefulness, sleep and under barbiturates.

The spontaneous unitary activity and the response to contralateral tone-burst were analyzed in the inferior colliculus (IC) of guinea pigs during the sleep-waking cycle and under the effects of pentobarbital anesthesia. Minor changes were observed in both spontaneous and evoked activity between wakefulness (W) and slow wave sleep (SWS). On the other hand, a consistent increase in the mean spontaneous firing rate and a significant decrement in the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ratio) was observed during paradoxical sleep (PS). Pentobarbital anesthesia reduced the spontaneous and evoked firing rate
