Dental implant treatment following trauma: An investigation into the failure to complete Accident Compensation Corporation funded care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Among other restorative strategies, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides benefits for dental implant treatment to replace teeth lost as a result of trauma. While ACC has funded over 15,000 dental implants since 2002, the outcomes of this treatment and patient perceptions of this treatment have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of the dental implant treatment outcomes and reasons for failure to complete restorative treatment in patients who had undergone trauma-related implant surgery funded by ACC between

Financial Burden in Dental Care: Global Determinants, Policy Interventions and Access Inequities-A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Access to dental care is often limited by financial, structural and social factors, contributing to persistent oral health inequalities globally. This scoping review systematically maps and synthesizes how financial pressures influence access, service utilization and oral health outcomes, particularly among underserved and vulnerable populations. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, 73 peer-reviewed studies published between 2004 and 2024 were included. The included studies spanned high-income countries (the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Australia) and low- and middle-in

Association between History of Dental Amalgam Fillings and Risk of Parkinson's Disease: A Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Study in Taiwan.

The impact of dental amalgam on the development of Parkinson's disease (PD) is still uncertain, although a positive association between dental amalgam and PD has been found in a few case-control studies. The patients with amalgam fillings restored between 2000 and 2008 were identified by using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. The same number of patients who had no new amalgam filling restored was matched by sex, age, and treatment date. Both cohorts were followed up from the treatment date until the date of diagnosis of PD, death, or the end of the year 2008.

Are women more susceptible than men to iatrogenic inferior alveolar nerve injury in dental implant surgery?

An over-representation of women in dental implant-related inferior alveolar nerve injuries (IANIs) is recognized in the literature but has not been investigated. Therefore, a nationwide retrospective register study was conducted to analyse how IANIs compare with other implant-related complications (infection, implant malposition, lack of bone at implant site, mechanical damage, or failed osseointegration) separately in women and men. Financially compensated malpractice claims related to dental implant surgery were collected from the Finnish Patient Insurance Centre for the years 1997-2013, whi

Barriers to prevention in oral health care for english NHS dental patients: a qualitative study of views from key stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in the control of oral diseases since the discovery of fluoride in the 1940s, dental caries and periodontal diseases continue to affect a significant proportion of the population, particularly socially disadvantaged and lower socioeconomic groups. The National Health Service in England provides preventive advice and treatments as part of an oral health assessment, and evidence-based guidance recommends the use of fissure sealants and topical fluorides in addition to dietary and oral hygiene advice. Although oral health promotion and education have becom

Affordable Care Act's Preventive Services Coverage Mandate and Receipt of Fluoride Varnish.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Affordable Care Act required private insurers to cover a set of recommended preventive services without cost-sharing. This included coverage of fluoride varnish (FV) applications without cost-sharing for children aged 1 through 5 during medical visits, an evidence-based treatment that prevents tooth decay. We examined if this coverage mandate was associated with more young children receiving FV. METHODS: Using the Massachusetts All-Payer Claims Database (2014-2018), we examined the likelihood that a privately insured child received FV during a medical visit in a

Willingness of Adults in the United States to Receive HIV Testing in Dental Care Settings: Cross-Sectional Web-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV and 1 in 8 are estimated to be unaware of their serostatus. Little is known about whether individuals would consider being tested for HIV in nontraditional health care settings such as a dentist's office. Studies in selected US cities have indicated high acceptability of receiving an HIV test among people attending dental clinics. However, we are not aware of studies that have assessed willingness to receive HIV testing in dental care settings at a national leve

Healthcare-related social determinants of health are associated with pain severity among adults with comorbid heart failure and chronic pain.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain worsens symptom burden and quality of life in individuals with heart failure (HF). Healthcare-related social determinants of health (SDOH) - including access (e.g., stability of coverage), affordability (e.g., medication cost-saving activities), and utilization (e.g., number of provider visits) may influence pain severity. This study aimed to describe these SDOH and examine their relationship with pain severity. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 4,026 adults with HF and chronic pain enrolled in the All of Us Research Program. Pain sev
