Predictors of intention to vaccinate against COVID-19: Results of a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: Public polling indicates that vaccine uptake will be suboptimal when COVID-19 vaccines become available. Formative research seeking an understanding of weak vaccination intentions is urgently needed. METHODS: Nationwide online survey of 804 U.S. English-speaking adults. Compensated participants were recruited from the U.S. through an internet survey panel of 2.5 million residents developed by a commercial survey firm. Recruitment was based on quota sampling to produce a U.S. Census-matched sample representative of the nation with regard to region of residence, sex, and age. RESUL…

Palatal Wound Healing with Primary Intention in a Rat Model-Histology and Immunohistomorphometry.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) from the palate has been considered as the "gold standard" for the treatment of deep gingival recessions. A single-incision technique was reported to allow primary wound healing. A palatal single incision was performed in a rat model. The present study assessed the histology and histomorphometry of palatal wound healing following surgical closure with primary intention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six 6-month-old male Wistar rats weighing 427-650 g. An incision was made on the maxillary palate. A full thickness flap was…

Neural mechanisms underlying attribution of hostile intention in nonaggressive individuals: An ERP study.

Although the perception of hostile intentions in other people can have a clear adaptive function, researchers have paid little attention to the capacity of nonaggressive individuals to infer hostile intentions in others. The goal of the present study was to study brain mechanisms associated with expectations of hostile/non-hostile intent and their on-line evaluation. Scenarios with a hostile versus non-hostile social context followed by a character's ambiguous aversive behavior were presented to readers, and we recorded and analyzed event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to critical words that …

Letter to Editor. Prerequisites for psychiatric examination detecting the intention to commit suicide.

The recent plane crash caused by the pilot increased the interest in the possibility of medical examination, which would be able to detect the intention of committing suicide. The development of such a diagnostic procedure is not only important for the prevention of events in the civil and military aviation, but also due to increase in the incidence of various suicide terrorist acts. The author expresses his opinion on the nature of such examination, due to his experience of working in Acute Poisoning Treatment Centre. The Centre admits about 1 000 patients per year, who have been rescued afte…

Associations of maternal obesity and psychosocial factors with breastfeeding intention, initiation, and duration.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors influence breastfeeding outcomes, but little is known about these characteristics and how they influence breastfeeding behavior of obese women, who are a group that experiences poor breastfeeding outcomes. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to determine whether 1) maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) is associated with social knowledge of, social influence toward, maternal confidence in, and behavioral beliefs about breastfeeding; 2) BMI and these psychosocial factors predict outcomes of intention to breastfeed, ever breastfed, and the duration of breastfe…

Atypical manifestations of organophosphorus poisoning following subcutaneous injection of Dichlorvos with suicidal intention.

Current case report describes a 37-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital following subcutaneous injection of Dichlorvos with an insulin syringe. The only peripheral cholinergic sign observed on admission was excessive salivation with bilateral pyramidal tract signs. Locally she had necrosis of skin and subcutaneous tissue with surrounding blisters. In the subsequent course of her illness, she developed respiratory arrest requiring ventilator support. She also had delayed extrapyramidal manifestations. Relevant literature is reviewed. Possibility of route-specific, delayed pr

Problem recognition, intention to stop use, and treatment use among regular heroin injectors.

This study investigated frequency of recent use as an explanatory variable in problem recognition and intention to stop use among regular injection heroin users. Data from the NEURO-HIV Epidemiologic Study, an investigation of neuropsychological and social-behavioral risk factors for HIV and hepatitis A, B, and C among injection and noninjection drug users, were used in the analyses. Participants (N = 337) consisted of those who reported injecting heroin daily or nearly daily for a period of 3 months. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that frequency of recent injection drug use pred…

Examining the role of perceived susceptibility on colorectal cancer screening intention and behavior.

Although support exists for multiple psychosocial predictors of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, little is known about the relationships among these variables. Understanding the associations between such predictors could refine health behavior theories and inform the design of interventions. In addition to direct effects, we examined whether baseline perceived susceptibility was a moderator of, or was mediated by, changes in other psychosocial determinants of CRC screening intention and behavior. Longitudinal path models were tested using data from 1,001 white male automotive workers who par…

Interaction between eye and hand movements in multiple sclerosis patients with intention tremor.

Deficient eye and hand movements are present in patients with multiple sclerosis. In the present study, eye and hand movements were simultaneously measured during visually guided wrist step-tracking tasks in 16 patients with intention tremor and 15 healthy controls. The coupling between eye and hand movements was analyzed during simultaneous eye-hand tracking, and interactions were studied by comparing the coordinated eye-hand condition with isolated eye- or hand-tracking conditions. Despite movement abnormalities, the onset of eye and hand movements was highly correlated and an invariant coup…

Intention to be screened over time for colorectal cancer in male automotive workers.

Intention is an important construct in health promotion research, yet very little is known about whether cross-sectional correlates of intention to be screened for colorectal cancer (CRC) also predict intention over time or intention change. We used survey data from The Next Step Trial, a worksite health promotion trial, to address the following questions: (1) What is the consistency over time of intention to be screened for CRC? (2) Are the patterns and magnitude of associations between intention to be screened and the Preventive Health Model variables consistent over time? (3) What are the p…

Differential involvement of parietal and precentral regions in movement preparation and motor intention.

Flexible goal-oriented behavior relies on spatial coordinate transformations and motor control mechanisms, but also on the capability to tak … tion) from delay-related activity unaffected by the likelihood of providing a motor response (motor intention). We found delay-related activity distributed across a cerebral network involving not only frontal circuitry, but also extrastriate and mediotemporal regions. Areas showing motor intentions and preparatory responses were spatially intermingled. Post …

Changes in intention to donate blood under a hypothetical condition of reduced confidentiality.

Lawsuits related to transfusion-associated human immunodeficiency virus infections have increasingly resulted in requests for the release of confidential information about volunteer blood donors. Concern that loss of confidentiality might change blood donor behavior led to a survey of donors at collection sites within an American Red Cross Blood Services Region. Of the 361 respondents, 50.3 percent (181) indicated reduced intent to provide accurate medical and personal history information under conditions of reduced confidentiality. Ten percent (34) indicated that they were not sure whether th

Automatic imitation towards robots is not influenced by the intentional stance.

Automatic imitation refers to the unconscious tendency to copy observed actions, a phenomenon that is robustly weaker when observing robots compared to humans. The present study investigated whether individual differences in the tendency to adopt the intentional stance (the epistemic strategy to attribute mental states to an agent or entity to predict/explain its behaviours) modulates this automatic imitation bias against robots. To do so, participants completed an online Automatic Imitation Task using both human and robotic hands, along with the Intentional Stance Test-2 (IST-2) and measures …

Military Healthcare Providers' Intent to Diagnose Adjustment Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: This study explored healthcare providers' intentions to diagnose Adjustment Disorder (AjD) in Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs) within the U.S. military, utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a guiding framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Focusing on 3 key TPB constructs-attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control-we conducted interviews with fifty healthcare providers experienced in caring for ADSMs. Initial coding involved categorizing data according to these theoretical constructs. This was followed by inductive and deductive thematic analysis to …

Intentional Target Reaching With an Underactuated Exoskeleton in a Cluttered Environment.

Upper-limb exoskeletons can assist individuals with arm weakness, but delivering appropriate assistance remains challenging. Effective assistance requires accurately understanding the user's intent. We propose an Intentional Target (IT) estimation framework that integrates shear force-based forearm rotation detection, vision-based object recognition, and hand tracking. This approach enables precise IT identification in cluttered environments, specifically tabletops with multiple objects, resembling real-world daily activities. After identifying the IT, the required joint angles for reaching ar…
