Prevalence of Auditory Problems in Children With Feeding and Swallowing Disorders.

PURPOSE: Although an interdisciplinary approach is recommended for assessment and management of feeding or swallowing difficulties, audiologists are not always included in the interdisciplinary team. The purpose of this study is to report the prevalence of middle ear and hearing problems in children with feeding and swallowing disorders and to compare this prevalence with that in typical children. METHOD: A total of 103 children were included in the study: 44 children with feeding and swallowing disorders and 59 children without any such disorders. Audiological examinations included case-hist

Effectiveness of interdisciplinary combined dermatology-gastroenterology-rheumatology clinical care compared to usual care in patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases: a parallel group, non-blinded, pragmatic randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQol), increased risk of somatic and psychiatric comorbidities and reduced socioeconomic status. Individuals with one IMID have an increased risk for developing other IMIDs. The unmet needs in the care of patients with IMIDs may result from a lack of patient-centricity in the usual monodisciplinary siloed approach to these diseases. The advantages of novel interdisciplinary clinics towards the traditional therapeutic approach have not been investigated. The overall aim of th

Grand rounds for dental students: an exploration.

Grand Rounds are widely used in medicine for educating students comprehensively about clinical issues. The aim of this study was to explore the value of Grand Rounds for introducing first- (D1) and second-year (D2) dental students to an interdisciplinary approach to dental care. The objectives were to explore how interested students were in various topics, which topics they would like to see addressed in future sessions, which aspects they liked/disliked, how they evaluated the program components, and how they evaluated the outcomes. Data were collected from D1s at the end of the Year 1 fall t

External apical root resorption in endodontically treated versus vital teeth following orthodontic treatment: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: External apical root resorption (EARR) is a frequent iatrogenic effect of orthodontic tooth movement. Whether endodontically treated teeth (ETT) are more prone to EARR than teeth with vital pulp tissue (VPT) remains uncertain and is clinically relevant for interdisciplinary treatment planning. This review aimed to compare the extent of EARR in ETT versus VPT after orthodontic treatment and to identify factors associated with EARR in ETT. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook was conducted. PubMed was searched for observat

Deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders.

Research on DBS for psychiatric disorders is being carried out in several areas, including obsessive- compulsive disorder, major depression, addictions, Tourette's syndrome and eating disorders. The results in the literature are described. The need for rigorous screening by interdisciplinary and ethical teams is explained. The need for pooling patients across different centres, with common treatment protocols, in order to achieve necessary large-scale studies in psychiatric DBS with long-term follow-up is pointed out.

Reconstructive flap surgery in head and neck cancer patients: an interdisciplinary view of the challenges encountered by radiation oncologists in postoperative radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Major advances have been made in reconstructive surgery in the last decades to reduce morbidity in head and neck cancer. Flaps are now present in 80% of patients with oral cavity cancer to cover anatomic, functional, and cosmetic needs. However, gaps in interdisciplinary innovation transfer from surgery to postoperative radiotherapy (poRT) remain challenging. We aimed to provide an interdisciplinary view of the challenges encountered by radiation oncologists in planning head and neck postoperative radiotherapy. METHODS: A systematic and critical review was conducted to address are

Dementia-related stigma in physicians: a scoping review of stigma-reduction interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Despite progress in dementia diagnosis and treatment, physician-held stigma remains a significant barrier to early recognition and effective care. Stigmatizing attitudes among healthcare professionals can negatively impact diagnosis rates, clinical interactions, and care quality for people living with dementia. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's framework. Peer-reviewed literature from 2014 to 2024 was systematically reviewed to identify and evaluate interventions aimed at reducing dementia-related stigma among physicians. A total of 14 st

Role of Inflammation and Cytokine Dysregulation in Depression in Patients with Inflammatory Skin Conditions.

The growing field of psychodermatology examines the interplay between dermatological and psychiatric comorbidities. While current literature recognizes that cutaneous and psychiatric conditions often coexist within patients, the relationship between dysregulated inflammation and depression in patients with inflammatory skin conditions has not been thoroughly explored. This review seeks to describe the connection between cutaneous disease and depression via shared inflammatory cytokine pathways. A review of current literature was conducted, and studies addressing the co-occurrence of depression

Utility of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure as an admission and outcome measure in interdisciplinary community-based geriatric rehabilitation.

In a community-based geriatric rehabilitation project, the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was used to develop a coordinated, interdisciplinary, and client-centred approach focusing on occupational performance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of the COPM as an admission and outcome measure in an interdisciplinary geriatric rehabilitation context in Denmark. Eighteen occupational and physiotherapists administered the COPM among elderly citizens. Of 185 citizens referred to the study, 152 were admitted to rehabilitation based on health indices, and 124 comp

Expert Clinical Panel Member for a Research Study: A Role for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

The role of advanced practice nurses (APRNs) continues to evolve, meeting the complex needs of today's healthcare systems while shaping the future of the nursing. APRNs provide holistic, patient-centered care that improves access to quality services. Beyond clinical practice, they serve as educators, mentors, and collaborators on interprofessional teams to enhance outcomes. This manuscript highlights a less-recognized role for APRNs: involvement on clinical expert panels of research studies. It describes the multifaceted contributions of APRNs on an interdisciplinary clinical expert panel of N

Bioelectronic Medicine: From Preclinical Studies on the Inflammatory Reflex to New Approaches in Disease Diagnosis and Treatment.

Bioelectronic medicine is an evolving field in which new insights into the regulatory role of the nervous system and new developments in bioelectronic technology result in novel approaches in disease diagnosis and treatment. Studies on the immunoregulatory function of the vagus nerve and the inflammatory reflex have a specific place in bioelectronic medicine. These studies recently led to clinical trials with bioelectronic vagus nerve stimulation in inflammatory diseases and other conditions. Here, we outline key findings from this preclinical and clinical research. We also point to other aspe

Sonic and electric fish: at the crossroads of neuroethology and behavioral neuroendocrinology.

Field and laboratory studies of weakly electric and sound-producing teleost fishes demonstrate how steroidal and non-steroidal hormones mediate the translation of neural events into behavior. The development of this research program has depended upon an interdisciplinary neuroethological approach that has characterized the neurophysiological properties of the motor and sensory pathways that lead to the production and detection of easily quantified highly stereotyped behaviors, namely, electric organ discharges (EODs) and vocalizations. Neuroethological studies of these teleosts have now integr

Timing of emergence of individual primary teeth. A prospective longitudinal study of Pakistani children.

Primary tooth emergence in Pakistani children was investigated as a part of a prospective interdisciplinary study of growth and development. The average order of emergence of the primary teeth was in agreement with previous studies from other countries. There was no sex difference in emergence of individual primary teeth. The emergence of the primary incisors and mandibular first molars in both sexes, and the canines in boys were significantly delayed compared to Swedish standards (Hägg & Taranger 1986).

Chronic pelvic pain in an interdisciplinary setting: 1-year prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pelvic pain affects ∼15% of women, and presents a challenging problem for gynecologists due to its complex etiology involving multiple comorbidities. Thus, an interdisciplinary approach has been proposed for chronic pelvic pain, where these multifactorial comorbidities can be addressed by different interventions at a single integrated center. Moreover, while cross-sectional studies can provide some insight into the association between these comorbidities and chronic pelvic pain severity, prospective longitudinal cohorts can identify comorbidities associated with changes in
