Psychological mechanisms in video game monetization: A typology of contemporary strategies beyond loot boxes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Contemporary video game monetization systems are increasingly embedded within gameplay, structuring decision-making and spending. While research has focused on loot boxes, other strategies remain under examined despite relying on similar mechanisms. This study develops a structured typology of monetization systems as integrated design architectures operating through embedded psychological processes. METHODS: A structured, theory-informed synthesis of literature on video game monetization, behavioral design, gambling research, and consumer behavior was conducted. Strategie

Social Media Addiction among Vietnam Youths: Patterns and Correlated Factors.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has investigated how the excessive use of social media has an impact on one's functioning. Youths are among the most vulnerable subjects to the impacts of social media overuse, especially in Vietnam (a developing country). However, very little evidence has been provided on social media addiction. This work aims to determine the prevalence of social media addiction amongst Vietnamese individuals and the factors associated with social media addiction. METHOD: An online cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 2020 in Vietnam. Participants completed the st

Differential neural reward processes in internet addiction: A systematic review of brain imaging research.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to examine the neural correlates of reward processing in various forms of Internet Addiction (IA) among adults, including generalized IA and specific conditions such as Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). The study seeks to identify distinct patterns of altered connectivity and activation in reward-related brain regions across different IA subtypes. METHODS: We analyzed findings from 44 neuroimaging studies, aligning with the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework. The review focused on three key aspects of reward processing: responsiveness, learning, an

Reconsidering the associations between self-reported alcohol use disorder and mental health problems in the light of co-occurring addictions in young Swiss men.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is known to co-occur with other addictions, as well as with mental health problems. However, the effects of other addictions co-occurring with AUD on mental health problems were rarely studied and not considering them may bias estimates of the association between AUD and mental health problems. This study investigated which role co-occurring addictions play for the cross-sectional associations between self-reported AUD and mental health problems. METHOD: Participants were 5516 young Swiss men (73.0% of those that gave written informed consent) who comple

Correlates of Borderline Personality Disorder Traits and Internet Gaming Disorder in College Students.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently co-occurs with addictive behaviors. One such behavior that is increasing, especially among college students, is pathological gaming. However, to the best of our knowledge, no prior research has been conducted on BPD in relation to internet gaming disorder (IGD), despite the two sharing correlates such as negative emotionality and impulsivity. We therefore explored the relationship between BPD traits and IGD. METHOD: We sampled a large (N = 407) sample of college students using two non-overlapping measures of BPD traits. We additional

Challenging Case: "Digital Addiction" in a Neurodivergent Adolescent.

Adam is a 15-year-old boy who was born prematurely, with prenatal substance exposure, and was diagnosed in early childhood with combined-type attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. He was not found to meet criteria for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Despite treatment with stimulant medications and other adjunctive medications, Adam experienced ongoing difficulties with impulse control, sleep, and aggression. Adam was introduced to digital devices at an early age, resulting in unfiltered, poorly supervised, and prolonged screen exposure.Over time, Adam's d

Introduction to behavioral addictions.

BACKGROUND: Several behaviors, besides psychoactive substance ingestion, produce short-term reward that may engender persistent behavior, despite knowledge of adverse consequences, i.e., diminished control over the behavior. These disorders have historically been conceptualized in several ways. One view posits these disorders as lying along an impulsive-compulsive spectrum, with some classified as impulse control disorders. An alternate, but not mutually exclusive, conceptualization considers the disorders as non-substance or "behavioral" addictions. OBJECTIVES: Inform the discussion on the r

Problematic Internet Use in Frontotemporal Dementia: A Case Series.

The present study investigated problematic internet use (PIU) among 61 patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) compared to a cohort of 354 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's dementia. PIU was identified in 22.9% of FTD patients compared to only 0.8% of AD patients (p < 0.001). Behaviors included compulsive social media use, gaming, and online shopping. These findings suggest that PIU may represent an emerging behavioral feature associated with FTD, significantly more prevalent than in MCI and Alzheimer's dementia. Recognizing these digital behaviors could provide

Sex differences in neural substrates of risk taking: Implications for sex-specific vulnerabilities to internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sex differences in internet gaming disorder (IGD) remain unknown. Investigating sex-specific neural features that underlie the core risk factor (i.e., risk-taking) of IGD would help in understanding sex-specific vulnerabilities to IGD and advance sex-specific treatments and prevention for IGD. METHODS: 111 participants (28 IGD males, 27 IGD females, 26 recreational game user (RGU) males, 30 RGU females) completed a probability discounting task during fMRI scanning. RESULTS: First, among RGUs, males showed a higher risk-taking tendency and greater neural activation associ

Altered neural responses to missed chance contribute to the risk-taking behaviour in individuals with Internet gaming disorder.

Missed chance is a powerful factor in shaping risk-taking behaviour. The abnormal risk-taking behaviour is an obvious feature of individuals with Internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, the relationship between the neural responses to missed chance and risk-taking behaviour in IGD individuals remains unclear. In the current fMRI study, 28 IGD subjects (12 female, 23.04 ± 2.43 years old) and 26 healthy control (HC) subjects (13 female, 23.58 ± 2.67 years old) participated in fMRI scanning during performance of a sequential risk-taking task. The general linear model and the psycho-physiological

Comparison of Online Sexual Activity Among Iranian Individuals With and Without Substance Use Disorder: A Case-Control Study.

The most important practical concerns in addiction medicine are the non-substance addiction and related addictive behaviors among individuals with substance use disorder. On the other hand, technological advances, and easy access have increased the frequency of online sexual activities (OSAs) as one of these behaviors. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of OSAs, based on the Internet Sex Screening Test (ISST) scores, among 60 patients with substance use disorder referred to Iran Psychiatric Hospital and 60 non-dependent individuals. The results showed significant negative correlations

The theoretical underpinnings of Internet addiction and its association with psychopathology in adolescence.

This paper reviews the psychological and theoretical underpinnings that might help to explain the reported relationship between Internet addiction (IA) and psychopathology in both children and adolescents. Drawing on cognitive-behavioural models and social-skills theory, IA shows a strong relationship with depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and time spent using the Internet use. Mixed findings are reported for social anxiety. Loneliness and hostility were also found to be associated with IA. Gender and age moderated these relationships with greater psychopathology gene

Abnormal Functional Connectivity in Cognitive Control Network, Default Mode Network, and Visual Attention Network in Internet Addiction: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Internet addiction (IA) has become a global mental and social problem, which may lead to a series of psychiatric symptoms including uncontrolled use of internet, and lack of concentration. However, the exact pathophysiology of IA remains unclear. Most of functional connectivity studies were based on pre-selected regions of interest (ROI), which could not provide a comprehensive picture of the communication abnormalities in IA, and might lead to limited or bias observations. Using local functional connectivity density (lFCD), this study aimed to explore the whole-brain abnormalities of function
