The Bishop-Koop anastomosis-a find in pediatric surgery.

A technique of intestinal anastomosis, developed for the treatment of meconium ileus, was used by the authors in the treatment of neonates suffering from various other intestinal anomalies such as atresia, volvulus and apple-peel syndrome. This technique was used in 6 neonates to make a safe intestinal reconstruction.

Intestinal IMINO transporter SIT1 is not expressed in human newborns.

The expression of amino acid transporters in small intestine epithelia of human newborns has not been studied yet. It is further not known w … n in the proximal kidney tubule leading to iminoglycinuria. Lack of amniotic fluid passage in small intestinal atresia does not affect amino acid transporter expression distal to intestinal occlusion.

Further evidence that arthrogryposis multiplex congenita in the human sometimes is caused by an intrauterine vascular accident.

A 7 1/2-year-old girl with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita of the amyoplasia type in association with intestinal atresias, gastroschisis, Möbius anomaly, and hypoplasia of the pectoral, biceps, and deltoid muscles is described. Several combinations of these birth defects have been previously described. There is considerable evidence that gastroschisis, intestinal atresia, Poland sequence, and Möbius anomaly each has a vascular pathogenesis. Based on the associations seen in this child and past reports of more limited, similar cooccurrences, we suggest that arthrogryposis multiplex congenita…

Omphalocele minor associated with complete absence of the large bowel.

Colonic atresia, unlike small intestine atresia, is a rare congenital malformation. Congenital absence of the entire colon is exceptionally rare. Moreover, an association of omphalocele and complete absence of the colon has not yet been reported in the literature. We present an infant born with such combination of congenital anomalies.

Gastroschisis, atresia, dysmotility: surgical treatment strategies for a distinct clinical entity.

PURPOSE: Intestinal atresia (IA) occurs in 10% to 20% of infants born with gastroschisis (GS). We describe a distinct subset of these children with severe dysmotility, without mechanical intestinal obstruction, and with adequate intestinal length for enteral nutrition and propose possible treatment strategies. METHODS: A total of 177 patients with GS managed at a single institution between 1993 and 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Twenty-one (12%) patients had IA. Six (29%) did well, with gradual progression to full diet; 1 died at birth because of complete midgut infarction; 1 d…

Colonic atresia in cattle: A prospective study of 43 cases.

This prospective study was initiated to document the success rate obtained in the treatment of colonic atresia in calves, identify factors that influence survival rate, and to report the histopathological appearance of the proximal blind end of the ascending colon. Forty-three calves with intestinal obstruction due to colonic atresia were admitted to the Ontario Veterinary College between September 1982 and May 1986. Parameters recorded prospectively in this study included age, breed, sex, history, vital signs, acid-base and electrolyte status, location of intestinal atresia, medical and surgi…

Biliatresone: progress in biliary atresia study.

BACKGROUND: Biliary atresia (BA) is one of the main causes of neonatal end-stage liver disease. Without timely diagnosis and treatment, most children with BA will develop irreversible liver fibrosis within the first two months. While current theorized causes of BA include viral infection, immune disorders, and genetic defects, the comprehensive etiology is still largely unknown. Recently, biliatresone attracted much interest for its ability to induce BA in both zebrafish and mice, so we summarized the latest progress of biliatresone research in BA and tried to answer the question of whether it

Preduodenal portal vein, malrotation, and high jejunal atresia: a case report.

Preduodenal portal vein (PDPV) is a rare congenital anomaly. In most patients, it is associated with other congenital defects including situs inversus, malrotation, and biliary atresia or occurs as part of the heterotaxia syndrome or polysplenia syndrome. We describe a newborn affected by high jejunal atresia, malrotation, and a complex cardiac anomaly, in whom PDPV was diagnosed at early relaparotomy because of stenosis of the jejunal anastomosis. Occurrence of PDPV with intestinal atresia has not been previously reported in the literature.

The blind loop syndrome in children.

Anatomical abnormalities of the small bowel that cause intestinal stagnation result in bacterial overgrowth and a blind loop syndrome (BLS). Bacterial breakdown of bile salts and deamination of protein lead to malabsorption, steatorrhea, and fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies. Four children developed BLS as a complication of necrotizing enterocolitis, jejunal atresia, gastroschisis, and biliary atresia. BLS was suggested by abdominal pain, feculent vomiting, steatorrhea, and hypoalbuminemia. Dilated, stagnant bowel loops were demonstrated in each instance by upper gastrointestinal contrast study

The role of indocyanine green in the diagnosis of biliary atresia: A word of caution.

Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging has emerged as a potential tool in evaluating biliary atresia, offering real-time visualisation of hepatobiliary excretion. Following intravenous administration, ICG is taken up by hepatocytes and excreted into bile, allowing assessment of biliary patency. In biliary atresia, absent or delayed fluorescence in the intestine may suggest obstruction. However, its diagnostic utility should be used with caution. We present a case highlighting a potential flaw in using ICG to diagnose biliary atresia.

Neonatal Intramural Calcification in Jejunal Atresia: Case Report of a Rare Phenomenon.

Intramural calcification in intestinal atresia is a rare type of intra-abdominal calcification. The exact etiology of intramural calcification remains obscure. A 1-day-old newborn male baby presented with signs of intestinal obstruction and was diagnosed to have jejunal atresia. The newborn underwent laparotomy with resection of atretic and dilated part of the small bowel. Histology of atretic part of jejunum and adjacent area revealed intramural calcification with extensive foreign-body giant cell reaction. This appears to be the first time that intramural calcification has been documented in…
