Pigmented contact dermatitis has been found to be caused by fragrances, cosmetics, washing powders, azo dyes in textiles, and rubber products in selected groups of patients. The aim of this study was to run screening patch tests in an unselected group of patients with pigmented contact dermatitis (n=29) encountered in our center over a 2-year period. The Schirmer tear test (STT) I was performed to evaluate tear production in 12 captive Nubian ibex (Capra ibex nubiana), 10 captive Burchell's zebras (Equus burchelli) and five Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) at the Tel-Aviv Ramat-Gan Zoological Center (Israel). Human T-cell lymphotrophic virus Type I (HTLV-I)-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a relatively new clinical entity. The disease is endemic in southwestern Japan, the Caribbean basin, the southeastern United States and Africa. We report the identification of this disease in Israel and review previous cases of HTLV-I infection and ATL in this region. The disease was initially indolent and later clinically aggressive, characterized by hypercalcemia, osteolytic bone lesions, leukemic skin and organ infiltration and opportunistic infection.

A pilot project to detect neural tube defects (NTD) of the fetus by maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) screening of women in early pregnancy was initiated in Tel Aviv in 1982 at the instigation of the Israel Ministry of Health. Various species of ixodid ticks that have been recorded to attack man were surveyed, and boutonneuse fever caused by Rickettsia conorii, which is transmitted in Israel by Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l., is reviewed. Only in one case were a complement fixation test and exact determination of the species of the tick performed. Tick toxicosis and tick paralysis are discussed, and the possibility of human babesiosis and Lyme disease or erythema chronicum migrans appearing in Israel is considered.

Pneumococcal sepsis is a life-threatening complication in splenectomised patients even since the introduction of a polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine. Eight episodes of pneumococcal sepsis in seven properly vaccinated splenectomised patients are described. All but two of the causative serotypes were included in the vaccine.
