The mast cell response in the mucosa and connective tissue of 36 jejunal biopsies of patients with clinically diagnosed trichinellosis, teniasis and lambliasis has been studied. Biopsy material was fixed in standard formalin or Carnoy's fixative, enabling differentiation between mucosal mast cells (MMC) and connective tissue mast cells (CTMC). With both fixatives CTMC could equally well be recognized. With Carnoy's fixative an additional population of mast cells (MMC) could be visualized both in the mucosa and the connective tissue. In the mucosa small mucosal mast cells were observed as well.

Of 31 patients with gastrectomy and isoperistaltic interposition of a long jejunal loop, a follow-up examination was possible in 13 cases. Gastroscopy and biopsy were performed in 10 of these patients. The time between operation and follow-up examination was 3 months to 2 1/2 years. At the time of operation 15 patients were older than 70 years (48.4%) and the 3 postoperative deaths belong to this age-group (9.6%). 10 patients died (32.3%). Using an electrical technique we estimated the thickness of the unstirred layer in the human jejunum during kinetic studies of electrogenic glucose absorption. The unstirred layer in seven healthy volunteers (632 +/- 24 mum: mean +/- SEM) was significantly thicker than in 10 patients with active coeliac disease (442 +/- 23 mum) but not significantly different in seven patients who had responded to treatment by gluten withdrawal (585 +/- 49 mum). In eight patients with folic acid malabsorption the malabsorption was reversed only when a combination of either 250 mg. of lyophilized human jejunal juice or 5 g. of lyophilized calf jejunum with 5 mg. of synthetic folic acid was fed; calf liver was ineffective. The factors in calf jejunum that re-established folic acid absorption were heat-stable and did not form polyglutamyl folates on previous incubation with folic acid.

Adult intussusception is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction and usually indicates an underlying pathological lead point. Jejunal involvement is particularly rare and often presents with nonspecific symptoms, leading to diagnostic delay. We report a 43-year-old woman with features of subacute intestinal obstruction.
