Gunshot casualties in Israel: A decade of violence.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize casualties hospitalized with assault (non-terror) related gunshot wounds (GSW) in Israel as a basis for determining the incidence, trends and at-risk population groups. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study is based on data from the Israel National Trauma Registry. The data includes GSW casualties hospitalized between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2020. Attempted suicide, unintentional injury, legal intervention, children (ages 0-9) and terror (Israeli-Arab conflict) related GSW were excluded. The remaining population

Novel mutations and DNA-based screening in non-Jewish carriers of Tay-Sachs disease.

We have evaluated the feasibility of using PCR-based mutation screening for non-Jewish enzyme-defined carriers identified through Tay-Sachs disease-prevention programs. Although Tay-Sachs mutations are rare in the general population, non-Jewish individuals may be screened as spouses of Jewish carriers or as relatives of probands. In order to define a panel of alleles that might account for the majority of mutations in non-Jewish carriers, we investigated 26 independent alleles from 20 obligate carriers and 3 affected individuals. Eighteen alleles were represented by 12 previously identified mu

Pediatric Trauma Mortality in Jerusalem's Israeli Healthcare System: A Retrospective Analysis.

Jerusalem's intricate geopolitical environment, ethnic diversity, and divided healthcare systems between its East and West regions may impact pediatric trauma mortality. This study investigated pediatric trauma mortality rates in Jerusalem's Israeli healthcare system. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on Jerusalem residents under 18 who died from trauma in the Emergency Department (ED) or within a week of hospital admission (ED/7-day) between January 2013, and December 2023. Jerusalem's overall population data were obtained from the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. During the study

Alzheimer's disease and the elderly in Israel: are we paying enough attention to the topic in the Arab population?

With the continuing rise in the elderly population, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia represent an increasing public health concern worldwide. In recent years, research has focused on the relationship between AD and ethnicity. Israel, a multiethnic society, provides a natural laboratory for research on ethnicity and health. The largest ethnic group is that of Israeli Jews, followed by Arab citizens, mostly Arab Muslims, with smaller numbers of Arab Christians in addition to Druze, Circassians, and others. The aim of this review is to clarify ethnic differences in prevalence and risk factor

Encephalitis lethargica in the Soviet Union.

Although encephalitis lethargica (EL) appeared in epidemic form in the Soviet Union during the 1920s as it did in most of the world, the Western literature, particularly English, contains little information about the manifestations of the disease there. Here we summarize articles by prominent Russian neurologists who wrote about the disease as they viewed it during the epidemic period. As in the West, Russian clinicians found EL to be remarkably polymorphic, although some signs and symptoms, especially those pertaining to the psychological aspects of the disease, seemed to be more prevalent or

Sexual Abuse in the Orthodox Jewish Community: A Literature Review.

Sexual abuse is a cross-cultural phenomenon related to multiple cultural contexts including religious affiliation. The Haredi, or Orthodox Jewish community (OJC), constitutes a significant minority group of the worldwide Jewish population, characterized by cultural conservatism, steadfast loyalty to the community, and strict religious behavioral codes. To date, only few empirical studies (as opposed to multiple media reports) have dealt with the issue of sexual abuse within the OJC. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we conducted a systematic r

They shall wear fringes.

The multiple functions of clothes include utility, protection, rivalry, disguise, camouflage, display for seduction purposes, aggression, totemism, and status. Here the focus is on a decorative and distinctive hierarchical aspect of ancient dress, the tsitsit or fringes, whose original function is long absent, but that has endured for 3,500 years in Judaism. The beginning of their use beyond the totemic appears related to issues of changing identity from slavery to liberty, endowing noble status, exhibitionism, a symbol of identity, identification with the aggressor, a talisman, and potency. A Case Report on an Extremely Rare Disease: Factor XI Deficiency.

Factor XI deficiency is a rare condition with an estimated prevalence of about one in one million and is more commonly seen in Ashkenazi Jews (8-9%) due to consanguinity. It occurs because of mutations in the factor XI gene (F11) on chromosome 4(4q35). Patients with this disorder may remain asymptomatic until they undergo any surgical procedure or delivery. The most common sites of bleeding include the oral cavity, pharynx, and genitourinary tract, where there is high fibrinolytic activity. Our patient was asymptomatic his whole life. He never had spontaneous bleeding or bruising; however, he

Bloom's syndrome. XIV. The disorder in Japan.

Fourteen persons have been diagnosed Bloom's syndrome in Japan, with cytological verification in 11. Widely separated birthplaces throughout Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu and a parental consanguinity incidence greater than in the general population suggest that the Bloom's syndrome mutation, although very rare, is distributed widely throughout the Japanese population. The locus mutated is the same as in Jews and persons of Western European extraction. The phenotype differs somewhat from most cases recognized elsewhere, in that dolichocephaly is a less constant feature, the facial skin lesion is

Changes in long-term employment and income following COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among Jewish and Arab populations in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The impact of Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) extends beyond health, potentially affecting long-term income and employment dynamics. In Israel, disparities exist between Jewish and Arab populations across many dimensions, including socioeconomic. The study's primary aim was to compare changes in employment and income among COVID-19-infected and non-infected participants among Jews and Arabs, the two main population groups comprising the population of Israel. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between March 2021 and June 2022 among adults employed prior to the pandem

Ethnic disparities in colorectal cancer outcomes: a population study from Israel.

Objectives: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Clear ethnic disparities in the incidence of CRC and its outcomes have been observed globally, but only few research efforts have been invested so far in the unique ethnic scene of Israeli population. This study aims to compare the clinico-pathologic features, tumor's characteristics and prognosis between Arab and Jewish CRC patients as well as among Jewish subgroups living within the same central coastal region in Israel. Methods: In this retrospective, single center study, a total of 401 patients w

Carcinoma of skin of penis.

Like the Jews, the Ibos or Igbos of Nigeria ritually circumcise males on the eighth day of birth. A retrospective review of approximately 15,000 surgical specimens collected from this ethnic group over a period of 13 years revealed 32 cases of carcinoma of the prostate but only 4 cases of penile carcinoma. One tumour arose on the glans penis. This localisation pattern suggests that, in circumcised males, smegma-induced squamous carcinoma of the glans can be abolished but not the ordinary squamous carcinoma that can develop by chance on the rest of the penis as well as on the glans. Infant morbidity and mortality.

The steady decline in the infant mortality rate among Jews showed a temporary, distressing reversal during the years immediately following the establishment of the State of Israel, but thereafter the rate again declined and the reduction was maintained. The rate fell to 13.9/1,000 live births in 1977. During recent years, there has been a significant parallel fall in the number of deaths during the first six days of life, reaching 8.0/1,000 live births in 1977. Hospital admissions, as an indicator of morbidity, now show less children with infantile diarrhea, formerly a major cause of hospitali

On Antiscience and Antisemitism.

Recent surges in antivaccine activism and other antiscience trends now converge with rising antisemitism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, authoritarian elements from the far right in North America and Europe often invoked Nazi imagery to describe vaccinations or at times even blame the Jewish people for COVID-19 origins and vaccine profiteering. Such tropes represent throwbacks to the 14th century, when European Jews were persecuted during the time of the bubonic plague. This article provides both historical and recent perspectives on the links between antiscience and antisemitism, together with

Familial Mediterranean fever with chronic ascites: a case report and a review of literature.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive inflammatory disease especially seen in Turks, Sephardic Jews, Armenians, and Arabs. Peritoneal and pleural inflammation, arthritis, erysipelas-like erythema, and arthralgia are well-known features of FMF. A small amount of peritoneal fluid collection can be seen during peritoneal attacks in FMF patients, but chronic ascites is a rather rare complication. We herein report a female FMF patient who developed chronic ascites. She was compound heterozygote for M694V/M680I mutation of the MEFV gene. Aspiration of the ascites fluid reveale

Diversity and Discrimination in Dentistry: The University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.

This article examines the history of discrimination against women, Jews, Blacks, and Asians at the University of Toronto dental school from 1921 to 2000. The University of Toronto was the largest dental school in Canada. Discrimination could take various forms - the most obvious was a quota. As this article will show, although it was not a quota per se, the University of Toronto dental school discriminated against Jewish students in the admissions process at least until 1954 and possibly thereafter. There appears to have been no discrimination against women in the admission process, although t
