[Post-respiratory infection reactive arthritis--etiology, clinical and laboratory characteristics and early prognosis].

AIM: To study etiology, clinico-laboratory characteristics and early prognosis of reactive arthritis developing after respiratory infections (priReA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Blood samples from 69 priReA patients aged 17-45 years were examined for specific antibodies to 28 bacterial and viral infectious agents, and antigens of group HLA-B7-CREG (B7, B13, B22, B27, B40, B73, Cw2). The test were made in hospital and 3 months after the patients' discharge. RESULTS: The priReA respiratory etiology was discovered in 31 patients, urogenital--in 14 cases and enterocolitic one--in 7 patients. Streptoc

Laboratory diagnosis of Toscana virus infection by enzyme immunoassay with recombinant viral nucleoprotein.

A recombinant enzyme immunoassay (rEIA) to detect serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG to Toscana virus (TOSV) was developed with the aim of establishing a simple and easily available assay for diagnosing acute and/or previous infections. The rEIA, based on the recombinant nucleoprotein of TOSV expressed in Escherichia coli, was evaluated with 97 serum samples collected in an area where TOSV is endemic and compared to an analogous assay based on cell-derived TOSV. Discordant results were resolved by immunoblotting (IB). Twenty-two of these samples, obtained from subjects hospitalized during th

Serum mannan-binding lectin (MBL) in patients with infection: clinical and laboratory correlates.

In this study, we determined the serum levels of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) in patients with suspected or documented infection to characterize the possible role of MBL in the susceptibility to infection. We also investigated the kinetics of MBL during the infection and correlated the concentrations of MBL with those of acute-phase reactants C-reactive protein (CRP) and group II phospholipase A2 (PLA2-II) and cytokines interleukin-1(IL-1). interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). The frequency of MBL deficiency in the patients with signs of infection did not differ fro

Hepatitis E virus infection in Europe: regional situation regarding laboratory diagnosis and epidemiology.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) was first identified in the excreta of an experimentally infected human volunteer and further confirmed by similar findings in clinical specimens from patients with acute jaundice disease different from hepatitis A and B. The HEV is a 27- to 34-nm spherical non-enveloped virus obviously represented by a single serotype; however, its final taxonomic definition remains to be established. Studies on molecular biology of this virus revealed some peculiar characteristics showing no homologies in its nucleotide sequence to any entries in the Genbank database. The HEV infectio

Community-wide surveillance of Campylobacter jejuni infection. Evaluation of a laboratory-based method.

Surveillance of infections due to Campylobacter jejuni is needed to further define the epidemiology of this disease in the U.S. We assessed one potential method of community-wide surveillance, a laboratory-based reporting network. Six microbiology laboratories that routinely culture fecal specimens for C. jejuni reported all isolates to Seattle-King County Health Department for an 18-month period. Further investigations on 476 cases reported from this broadly based network revealed that C. jejuni enteritis affected primarily children and young adults, occurred sporadically (with a summer-fall

Laboratory infection of the sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli (Diptera, Psychodidae) with three Phleboviruses.

Membrane feeding and intrathoracic inoculation techniques were used to infect Phlebotomus papatasi sandflies with Phlebotomus fever group viruses. Sandflies were orally infected with Pacui virus, and were inoculated with Pacui, Sicilian sandfly fever and Naples sandfly fever viruses. Pacui virus did not multiply in these insects after oral infection, but an 8 X 10(4)-fold increase in virus concentration occurred within four days of intrathoracic inoculation of this virus. The infection rate was 100%. Sicilian sandfly fever virus multiplied in P. papatasi after infection by inoculation, althoug

Human infection with monkeypox virus: laboratory investigation of six cases in West Africa.

Between September 1970 and May 1971 six cases of human infection with monkeypox virus were identified in three West African countries-Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. Four of the cases were confirmed by viral isolation, and two were diagnosed on epidemiological and serological evidence. Poxvirus strains isolated from the four cases were indistinguishable from reference monkeypox strains (Copenhagen and Utrecht), and all were easily differentiated from variola and vaccinia viruses. The isolated strains produced small necrotic haemorrhagic pocks on CAM, grew well at 39.0 degrees C, formed lar

Mexico's Laboratory-Confirmed Human Case of Infection with the Influenza A(H5N2) Virus.

In April 2024, the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias of Mexico City identified a case of unsubtypeable Influenza A in a 58-year-old immunocompromised patient with renal failure due to diabetic nephropathy and bacterial peritonitis. Through sequencing the M, NS, NA, NP, and HA complete segments, we identified an H5N2 influenza virus with identity of 99% with avian influenza A(H5N2) from Texcoco, Mexico, in 2024. This case is the first reported with direct evidence of human infection caused by the H5N2 influenza virus; the relationship of the virus with the severity of his conditi

Infection Risk From Humans and Animals in the Anatomy Laboratory: A Scoping Review.

Whole-body dissection is a cornerstone of anatomy education. During and following the COVID-19 pandemic, exposure to infectious agents and other risks of dissection were highlighted. To identify potential risks, one must have the data outlining these risks in specific situations. However, information regarding the risks of encountering an infectious pathogen in donors is not readily available for educators and anatomical programs and there are presently no universal guidelines for lowering the risk of exposure to such pathogens. Therefore, this scoping review aims to provide information regard

Clinical epidemiological and laboratory investigation in co-infection with COVID-19 and tuberculosis.

Currently, COVID-19 and tuberculosis (TB) are the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide. Their synergy, form of presentation, morbidity, and mortality are data that have been scarcely explored. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory factors of this co-infection and to analyze the factors associated with the active TB among COVID-19 cases. A case-control study was conducted with a retrospective survey of 21 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19/TB co-infected patients (case group) and 21 COVID-19 patients (control group). The study included participants f

Interstitial pneumonia in immunocompetent laboratory rats caused by natural infection with Pneumocystis carinii.

Pneumocystis (P.) carinii is known to cause fatal pneumonia in immunocompromised rats. Cases of P. carinii interstitial pneumonia in immunocompetent rats have been shown histologically to present with perivascular lymphoid cuffs, which have previously been attributed to rat respiratory virus. This study aims to determine the prevalence and pathological characteristics of P. carinii in immunocompetent laboratory rats in experimental facilities in Japan. An epidemiological survey for this agent was performed using PCR to assess 1,981 immunocompetent rats from 594 facilities in Japan. We observed

COVID-19 Infection: Data Gaps for Diagnostic Laboratory Preparedness and Tasks on Hand.

Emergence of the 2019 novel coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]) and its spread, with life-threatening outcomes, have caused a pandemic burden worldwide. Studies of emerging diseases under outbreak conditions have focused on the complete spectrum of pathogens, transmissibility, shedding kinetics in relation to infectivity, epidemiological causes, and interventions to control emergence. During the initial stages of an outbreak, laboratory response capacity focuses on expansion of efficient diagnostic tools for rapid case detection, contact tracing, putting
