Larva currens following systemic steroid therapy in a case of strongyloidiasis.

The authors report a case of larva currens following systemic steroid administration for acute contact eczema. The patient was found affected with subclinical strongyloidiasis. Strongyloides is not very common in Northern Italy; it is occasionally diagnosed from stool samples from patients complaining of persisting itching.

The raccoon ascarid. A probable cause of human ocular larva migrans.

The ability of raccoon roundworm larvae, Baylisascaris procyonis, to produce ocular larva migrans (OLM) was studied in various experimental animals. In addition, the clinical and pathologic lesions were compared to those in suspected cases of human ocular baylisascariasis, in patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN). Ocular larva migrans was produced in squirrel monkeys, cynomolgus monkeys, mice, hamsters, grey squirrels, and woodchucks orally infected with B. procyonis eggs. The clinical and histologic lesions were primarily those of retinitis, retinal hemorrhages, reti…

Risk factors for toxocaral ocular larva migrans: a case-control study.

Twenty-four patients with serologically confirmed toxocaral ocular larva migrans (OLM) and 24 age- and sex-matched controls were the subjects of an epidemiologic study. Information on the exposure to dogs and other factors possibly associated with transmission of toxocariasis was obtained by contacting the parents of the subjects. The odds of having had a dog present in the household within the year previous to onset of illness were 3 to 1 for cases vs controls. An association of pups (< 3 months) in the households of OLM patients within one year of onset was statistically significant (P < .05…

Visceral larva migrans and alveolar hydatid disease. Dangers real or imagined.

For both visceral larva migrans and alveolar hydatid diseases, it is the feces of companion animals that are the primary source of human infection. Clearly, whatever is done to reduce this form of environmental contamination and the prevalence of the parasites' infective stages will help to protect the health of the human population in the United States and Canada, particularly the children. Very important are appropriate anthelmintic treatment programs, especially for T. canis, and proper control of close associations between pets and people. Probably the known incidence of visceral larva mig…

Trichinella spiralis: proteinases in the larvae.

Under in vitro conditions, muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis secreted minute amounts of a cysteine proteinase into the outer environment from the stichosome. The proteinase hydrolyzed azocoll at pH 5.0 but not a number of synthetic N-blocked and N-unsubstituted proteinase substrates at this pH. The reducing compound dithioerythritol enhanced the enzyme activity, but the thiol-blocking reagent sodium-p-hydroxymercuribenzoate (0.1 mM) was without effect. Phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) (2 mM) and leupeptin (100 mM) produced partial and complete inhibition, respectively, whereas soybean …

[Atlas of infective larvae of filariae].

The family Onchocercidae contains 78 genera, all of which are filarial parasites transmitted by blood-sucking vectors. The infective larval stages of 34 genera are described, including representatives of all those genera with large numbers of species and with the highest pathogenicity for man. A dichotomous key for the identification of infective larvae is presented, which may prove useful for epidemiological studies. Only the most easily recognized morphological characteristics have been taken into account. They appear to be of phylogenetic significance, for the correlation between these char…

Encysted parasitic larvae in the mouth.

Oral appearances of intestinal parasitic disease are rare. One such appearance is the presence in oral tissues of encysted or encapsulated larvae of organisms from the classes Cestoidea and Nematoda. Cestode larvae form cyst-like lesions that are often clinically diagnosed as mucoceles. In these lesions, the cyst cavity is lined by fibrous tissue with inflammatory cells, and contains fluid and the larval stage of a parasite. The diagnosis of these parasitic cysts is more frequently made in younger persons. The cysts may be treated by simple excision, but care must be taken that the cyst does n…
