Patterns of Substance Use and Arrest Histories Among Hospitalized HIV Drug Users: A Latent Class Analysis.

Using baseline data from the NIDA Clinical Trials Network 0049 study (Project HOPE), we performed latent class analyses (LCA) to identify discrete classes, or clusters, of people living with HIV (PLWH) based on their past year substance use behaviors and lifetime arrest history. We also performed multinomial logistic regressions to identify key characteristics associated with class membership. We identified 5 classes of substance users (minimal drug users, cocaine users, substantial cocaine/hazardous alcohol users, problem polysubstance users, substantial cocaine/heroin users) and 3 classes of

Outcomes related to adverse childhood experiences in college students: Comparing latent class analysis and cumulative risk.

The aims of this study were to identify latent classes of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in a large sample of college students (N = 8997), investigate the relations between ACEs classes and life functioning, and compare results using latent class analysis to analyses using cumulative risk scores. Nine types of ACEs were assessed (three types of child abuse and six types of household dysfunction). Outcomes were self-report measures of mental health, physical health, alcohol consequences, and academic performance. Latent class analysis (LCA) results indicated that four classes fit the data

Identification and validation of functional gastrointestinal disorder subtypes using latent class analysis: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Attempts to categorize distinct functional gastrointestinal disorders based on reported symptoms continue but symptoms frequently overlap. The study objective was to use latent class analysis (LCA) which accommodates both continuous and discrete manifest variables to determine mutually exclusive subgroup assignments of a population-based sample using gastrointestinal symptom and patient data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A validated bowel disease questionnaire and somatic symptom questionnaire were mailed to an age and gender stratified randomly selected community sample. Responses to th

Latent Class Analysis of HIV Risk Behaviors Among Russian Women at Risk for Alcohol-Exposed Pregnancies.

The number of HIV cases attributed to heterosexual contact and the proportion of women among HIV positive individuals has increased worldwide. Russia is a country with the highest rates of newly diagnosed HIV infections in the region, and the infection spreads beyond traditional risk groups. While young women are affected disproportionately, knowledge of HIV risk behaviors in women in the general population remains limited. The objectives of this study were to identify patterns of behaviors that place women of childbearing age at high risk for HIV transmission and determine whether socio-demog

What does IGRA testing add to the diagnosis of ocular tuberculosis? A Bayesian latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the contribution made to the diagnostic work-up for patients with suspected ocular tuberculosis (TB) by QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) tests using latent class analysis model. METHODS: A single centre retrospective cohort study. A Bayesian latent class model was constructed on the basis of demographics, phenotypes and test results from patients attending a tertiary referral center in the UK. This estimated the probability of ocular TB for each patient in two versions, first with and then without QFT. The estimated probability of ocular TB was compared with treatment

Determination of psychosis-related clinical profiles in children with autism spectrum disorders using latent class analysis.

In children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), high rates of idiosyncratic fears and anxiety reactions and thought disorder are thought to increase the risk of psychosis. The critical next step is to identify whether combinations of these symptoms can be used to categorise individual patients into ASD subclasses, and to test their relevance to psychosis. All patients with ASD (n = 84) admitted to a specialist national inpatient unit from 2003 to 2012 were rated for the presence or absence of impairment in affective regulation and anxiety (peculiar phobias, panic episodes, explosive reaction

Diagnostic performance of various tests and criteria employed in allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis: a latent class analysis.

AIM: The efficiency of various investigations and diagnostic criteria used in diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) remain unknown, primarily because of the lack of a gold standard. Latent class analysis (LCA) can provide estimates of sensitivity and specificity in absence of gold standard. Herein, we report the performance of various investigations and criteria employed in diagnosis of ABPA. METHODS: Consecutive subjects with asthma underwent all the following investigations Aspergillus skin test, IgE levels (total and A.fumigatus specific), Aspergillus precipitins, eos

Family income trajectory during childhood is associated with adiposity in adolescence: a latent class growth analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood socioeconomic disadvantage has been linked with obesity in cross-sectional research, although less is known about how changes in socioeconomic status influence the development of obesity. Researchers have hypothesized that upward socioeconomic mobility may attenuate the health effects of earlier socioeconomic disadvantage; while downward socioeconomic mobility might have a negative influence on health despite relative socioeconomic advantages at earlier stages. The purpose of the current study was to characterize trajectories of family income during childhood, and to eval

Examining the overlap between bipolar disorder, nonaffective psychosis, and common mental disorders using latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: While dimensional models of psychopathology have delineated two broad factors underlying common mental disorders--internalizing and externalizing--it is unclear where bipolar disorder and nonaffective psychoses fit in relation to this structure and to each other. Given their low prevalence rates in the general population, these disorders generally tend to be excluded from such models. The current study used the person-centered approach of latent class analysis (LCA) to evaluate this question. SAMPLING AND METHODS: LCA of diagnostic data from an epidemiological sample, the National

A latent class analysis of DSM-IV pathological gambling criteria in a nationally representative British sample.

This study identified empirically derived subtypes of gamblers based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV) diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling disorder (PGD). Data from the gamblers (n=5644) who participated in the 2007 British Gambling Prevalence Survey (BGPS) were analysed using latent class analysis. Common socio-demographic correlates of PGD were subsequently assessed across the classes. Three distinct groups or classes of gamblers emerged. The majority of the sample (88.9%) was assigned to a 'non-problematic gambler' class. A second 'preoccupie

Visual inspection with acetic acid as a cervical cancer test: accuracy validated using latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to validate the accuracy of an alternative cervical cancer test - visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) - by addressing possible imperfections in the gold standard through latent class analysis (LCA). The data were originally collected at peri-urban health clinics in Zimbabwe. METHODS: Conventional accuracy (sensitivity/specificity) estimates for VIA and two other screening tests using colposcopy/biopsy as the reference standard were compared to LCA estimates based on results from all four tests. For conventional analysis, negative colposcopy was a

Subtypes of illicit drug users: a latent class analysis of data from an Australian twin sample.

This article applies methods of latent class analysis (LCA) to data on lifetime illicit drug use in order to determine whether qualitatively distinct classes of illicit drug users can be identified. Self-report data on lifetime illicit drug use (cannabis, stimulants, hallucinogens, sedatives, inhalants, cocaine, opioids and solvents) collected from a sample of 6265 Australian twins (average age 30 years) were analyzed using LCA. Rates of childhood sexual and physical abuse, lifetime alcohol and tobacco dependence, symptoms of illicit drug abuse/dependence and psychiatric comorbidity were compa

Latent class analysis applied to patterns of fetal sonographic abnormalities: definition of phenotypes associated with aneuploidy.

The aim of the present study was to generate different latent variables that classify the major chromosome aneuploidies using frequency and patterns of fetal sonographic abnormalities in a large database. A total of 1867 fetuses with sonographic abnormalities recorded in a database at New England Medical Center from January 1995 to March 1998 were available for the statistical analysis. Included within this group were 61 aneuploid fetuses, including 11 with 45,X, 30 with trisomy 21, 14 with trisomy 18 and 6 with trisomy 13, 40 structural malformations and/or sonographic markers were detected i

Patterns of person-centred communications in public HIV clinics: a latent class analysis using the Roter interaction analysis system.

INTRODUCTION: Poor client-provider communication is a critical barrier to long-term retention in care among people living with HIV. However, standardized assessments of this key metric are limited in Africa. We used the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS) to quantitatively characterize patterns of person-centred communication (PCC) behaviours in Zambia. METHODS: We enrolled pairs of people living with HIV making routine HIV follow-up visit and their providers at 24 Ministry of Health-facilities supported by the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia in Lusaka province between A

Patterns of Social Risk Factors and Associations With Health Outcomes: Findings From a Latent Class Analysis.

IntroductionWith growing attention to the role of social factors in shaping health, efforts have emerged to integrate social risk information into population health surveillance and healthcare delivery. However, current approaches to address social risk tend to focus on responding to each risk factor in isolation, overlooking the interconnected nature of multiple social risks that often cluster together.MethodsThis study used latent class analysis to identify profiles of co-occurring social risk using a national sample of 110,028 adults across 17 U.S. states.ResultsThree profiles emerged: Low

Phenotypes of atopic dermatitis in Polish children-Latent class analysis of cross-sectional questionnaire-based study.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease with a heterogeneous clinical course. Distinct phenotypes show differences in age at onset, severity, and allergic profile; however, evidence from Central and Eastern Europe remains limited. METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire distributed via social media targeted parents of children <18 years of age with physician-diagnosed AD. The data included demographics, environmental exposures, AD history, proxy Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM) scores, comorbidities, and self-reported sensitizations. Children

Disentangling food addiction-related symptom profiles in anorexia nervosa: a latent class analysis and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: The construct of Food Addiction (FA) has generated growing interest in the context of Anorexia Nervosa (AN), especially for its potential clinical implications. While AN is traditionally associated with restrictive eating patterns, recent findings suggest that FA symptoms may also be present in this population, complicating the clinical picture. This study aimed to explore FA symptomatology in individuals with AN using a person-centered approach and to identify psychological variables associated with different FA profiles. METHODS: A sample of 202 individuals with a diagnosis of A
