Oviposition by a Specialist Herbivore Increases Susceptibility of Canola to Herbivory by a Generalist Herbivore.

Oviposition by specialist herbivores can alter the suitability of the host plant to subsequent infestation by other herbivores. In this study, we tested the effect of previous oviposition on canola, Brassica napus L., by a Brassica specialist, the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), on subsequent herbivory by the generalist feeder, the bertha armyworm (BAW), Mamestra configurata Walker (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The effect of DBM oviposition on subsequent BAW oviposition and larval feeding was tested in no-choice and choice experiments. Oviposition of BA

From concrete to canopy: Illuminating moth biodiversity in New York City's urban jungle.

Moths (Lepidoptera) are sensitive to anthropogenic threats and serve as valuable bioindicators. Despite the remarkable diversity and abundance of Lepidoptera globally, there is a lack of information on how moth species are impacted by urbanization. Notably, very little is known about moths in the most populus city of the United States, New York City, where pervasive urban pollutants, artificial light at night, land cover change, and habitat fragmentation are severe. We examined the effects of urbanization on moth biodiversity in New York City, with a focus on green spaces. We used citizen scie

Multiple independent origins of the female W chromosome in moths and butterflies.

Lepidoptera, the most diverse group of insects, exhibit female heterogamy (Z0 or ZW), which is different from most other insects (male heterogamy, XY). Previous studies suggest a single origin of the Z chromosome. However, the origin of the lepidopteran W chromosome remains poorly understood. Here, we assemble the genome from females down to the chromosome level of a model insect (Bombyx mori) and identify a W chromosome of approximately 10.1 megabase using a newly developed tool. In addition, we identify 3593 genes that were not previously annotated in the genomes of B. mori. Comparisons of 2

Parasitism of Two Spodoptera spp. by Microplitis prodeniae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Early instar larvae of the tobacco cutworm Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and the beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are recognized hosts of the parasitic wasp Microplitis prodeniae Rao and Kurian (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), although M. prodeniae has previously been regarded as monophagous. In this study, we found the immature period and longevity of M. prodeniae developing in S. exigua was similar to that in S. litura. It was shown that the development time of M. prodeniae in S. exigua was 15.1 ± 0.3 d, not significantly different from 15.0 ± 0.2 d in S. litur

Different Scales, Different Rules: How Do Temperature and Radiation Across Macro- and Microclimate Shape Forest Insect Traits?

Ecophysiological rules such as the Heat Conservation and Thermal Melanism Hypotheses, the Heat Transfer Theory or Bogert's Rule predict different relationships between insect body size, colour lightness and thermal environments. Forests provide scale-dependent thermal conditions - strong macroclimatic gradients across regions and microclimatic buffering depending on canopy density, with dense canopies producing cooler, more stable conditions and open canopies allowing higher light and heat input. Consequently, trait-environment relationships may vary accordingly. Here we test across both macro

A Testis-Specific Aralkylamine N-Acetyltransferase Regulates Dimorphic Sperm Function and Male Fertility in Moths.

Most Lepidopterans produce two distinct sperm types-nucleated eupyrene (fertile) and anucleate apyrene (non-fertile), yet the genetic mechanisms governing this dimorphism remain poorly understood. Using the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) as a model, we identified a Lepidoptera-conserved, testis-specific arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (LTNAT) indispensable for male fertility. Functional analyses showed that LTNAT is expressed in both sperm types, and its depletion disrupts mitochondrial derivatives (MDs) in eupyrene sperm and drastically impairs apyrene sperm motility. Multi-omics an

Species-Specific COI Primers for Rapid Molecular Identification of Leucoptera malifoliella.

Leucoptera malifoliella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) is a quarantine pest of apple and other Rosaceae fruit trees whose range is expanding into new territories. Its minute size and morphological overlap with closely related Lyonetiidae make routine identification unreliable, especially for larvae and damaged specimens. We compared COI sequences from six common small Lepidoptera species found in orchards and designed the species-specific primer pair SXW-F/SXW-R. The resulting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay amplifies an ~500 base pairs (bp) fragment exclusively from L. malifoliella; no prod

Artificial insemination using trypsin-treated sperm in the silkworm, Bombyx mori.

A new method was developed for artificial insemination of the silkworm. Virgin females artificially inseminated by this method oviposited fertilized eggs at a rate almost similar to that of females mated with males. Using inactive sperm collected from the seminal vesicles, we confirmed the previous finding by Omura, S., 1936a, Artificial insemination of Bombyx mori, Journal of Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido Imperial University 38, 135-150, and Omura, S., 1938, Studies of the reproductive system of the male of Bombyx mori II, Post-testicular organs and post-testicular behaviour of the spermat

The genome sequence of the Grey Dagger, Acronicta psi (Linnaeus, 1758).

We present a genome assembly from an individual male Acronicta psi (the Grey Dagger; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Noctuidae). The genome sequence is 405 megabases in span. The whole assembly is scaffolded into 31 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the assembled Z sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 15.4 kilobases long.

Heterologous expression of taxane genes confers resistance to fall armyworm in Nicotiana benthamiana.

Taxadiene synthase, taxadiene-5α-hydroxylase, and taxane 13α-hydroxylase genes were introduced into Nicotiana benthamiana, and the improved resistance to lepidoptera pest fall armyworm was reported. Fall armyworm (FAW) is a serious agricultural pest. Genetic engineering techniques have been used to create pest-resistant plant varieties for reducing pest damage. Paclitaxel is a diterpenoid natural metabolite with antineoplastic effects in medicine. However, the effects of taxanes on the growth and development of lepidoptera pests, such as the FAW, are unknown. Here, selected paclitaxel precurso

Inhibitory effect of thymol on pheromone-mediated attraction in two pest moth species.

Plant essential oils are considered as important bio-sources for the development of natural and environmentally safe pest control tools due to their multiple modes of action on insects. In this paper we have evaluated the activity of commercially available thyme oil and its constituents thymol, carvacrol, and p-cymene, as potential disruptants of the pheromone-mediated communication in the major pest moths Spodoptera littoralis Boisduval (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). In electroantennographic assays, the antennal response of males to thyme

Redescription of the earthworm Moniligaster gravelyi Stephenson, 1915 (Clitellata, Moniligastridae) based on recent collections from Kerala state, India.

Earthworms of the genus Moniligaster Perrier, 1872 can be distinguished from other genera of the family Moniligastridae by the presence of spermathecal atrial glands. Moniligaster gravelyi Stephenson, 1915 has so far been known only from a single specimen, and it is the only species with supposed single spermathecal atrial gland in the genus. Hence, this species has been a subject to some taxonomic confusion. Here, M. gravelyi is redescribed from new material collected and illustrated for the first time. The current study expanded its description and provided a more comprehensive taxonomic cha
