BACKGROUND: Epidermal malignancies developing in association with hematolymphoid malignancies are exceptional. Only one prior case of myeloid leukemia cutis with a cutaneous epidermal malignancy has been reported.
METHODS: We report two cases; one occurred in association with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and another with basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
RESULTS: Both patients were 83-year-old males without established histories of systemic hematopoietic disorders; one presented with an erythematous papule on the right upper back and the other with a nodule on the left wrist. One biopsy revealed

The interaction between neoplastic as well as normal T cells and vascular endothelial cells which is mediated by adhesion molecules play a key role in their trafficking, localization and infiltration. This brief article reviews our studies on the expression of adhesion molecules on leukemic cells isolated from patients with adult T cell leukemia (ATL) and HTLV-I-infected T cell line cells and on their adhesion to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Fresh ATL cells expressed lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1), but the expression of very late antigen-4 (VLA-4) and sialy

BACKGROUND: Neuroleukemiosis, leukemic infiltration of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), is rare. Very few cases of isolated neuroleukemiosis, PNS leukemic infiltration without leukemia blasts in the blood or bone marrow, have been reported in pediatrics. Most cases have occurred in adults with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in remission who presented with peripheral neuropathy. We describe a pediatric patient presenting with isolated neuroleukemiosis mimicking Guillain-Barré syndrome.
PATIENT DESCRIPTION: A 15-year-old boy presented 1 month after IVIG treatment for Guillain-Barre syndro…

We evaluated the frequency and prognostic significance of extramedullary infiltrates (EMI) at presentation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adult patients. Of 331 cases with de novo AML, 101(30.5%) had extramedullary infiltrates at diagnosis. The extramedullary manifestations included: lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, gingival hypertrophy, skin infiltrates and involvement of central nervous system (CNS). Patients with EMI had a high initial WBC count and a high proportion of M4/M5 morphological variants. The complete remission rate (CR) with induction chemotherapy was lower in pa

T1 and T2 relaxation time measurements of the femoral marrow were performed in 20 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 9 patients with iron deficiency or other severe anemia who had shown diffuse abnormal signals on MR imaging of the femoral marrow. The ability of T1 and T2 values to differentiate between leukemic infiltration and hyperplastic hematopoietic marrow was evaluated. T1 and T2 ratios (T1 abnormal marrow/T1 normal marrow and T2 abnormal/T2 normal) were calculated, and the ratios of T1 to T2 (T1/T2) and of the T1 ratio to the T2 ratio (T1 ratio/T2 ratio) were also analyzed.…

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic involvement as an initial presentation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults is rare and may delay the diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case series of adult patients with confirmed B-cell ALL (B-ALL) and altered liver function tests at disease onset was conducted. Clinical, biochemical, imaging, and flow cytometry data were collected, ruling out infectious, autoimmune, and toxic etiologies.
RESULTS: Three men, 68, 36, and 38 years of age, presented with cholestasis and hepatosplenomegaly with no biliary tract dilation. Flow cytometry showed high percentages

Leukaemia cutis (LC) is the infiltration of neoplastic leukocytes into the skin, characterised by haemorrhagic papules, nodules, and plaques. LC has been reported in human leukaemia patients, but it is extremely rare in dogs. A 13-year-old spayed female Golden Retriever that was previously diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia was managed with chlorambucil (20 mg/m2 orally, every 2 weeks) and prednisolone (2 mg/kg orally, every other day) for 8 months; however, immunosuppression was temporarily discontinued because of a bacterial urinary tract infection. Cutaneous signs, including multi

INTRODUCTION: Ocular infiltration of leukemia can involve orbit, uveal tract, retina and optic nerve. It may result from direct ocular infiltration by leukemic cells or indirect ocular involvement resulting from secondary hematologic changes, opportunistic infections and complications of various modalities of therapy. We report a case of unilateral infiltration of the optic nerve revealing a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
CASE REPORT: forty eight years-old woman in a remission of acute B lymphoblastic leukemia presented with headaches and blurred vision in the left eye. Ophthalmic e

Acute myeloid leukaemias (AML) are aggressive haematopoietic neoplasms that, if untreated, can lead to death within days. Up to 40% of presenting patients show evidence of extramedullary involvement (EMI) at diagnosis. EMI is reportedly most prevalent in myelo-monoblastic and monoblastic subtypes of AML (M4 and M5 according to FAB classification) and can present as leukaemic infiltrates in many sites including gingival enlargement and mucosal and skin nodules. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival enlargement secondary to leukaemic infiltration. This case shows the importan

A 73-year-old man with acute adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) in remission was re-admitted to our hospital due to drowsiness, headache, and bilateral knee joint pain on May 17, 1998. On admission, examinations revealed decreased serum sodium concentration (112 mEq/l), low plasma osmotic pressure (259 mOsm/l), and elevated antidiuretic hormone(5.6 pg/ml). Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed an increased number of abnormal flower-like lymphocyte (951/microliter). Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging found no abnormality in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. These findings yie

This review addresses diagnosis of CNS involvement, incidence and treatment of CNS disease at time of diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of CNS relapse and risk factors for meningeal recurrence in adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). At the time of diagnosis meningeosis leukaemica is present in about 6% (1-10%) of the adult ALL patients with a higher incidence in ALL subgroups T-ALL (8%) and B-ALL (13 %). With the invention of early additional CNS directed therapy it no longer represents an unfavourable prognostic factor. In the absence of prophylaxis meningeal relapses occur in approx

Leukaemic relapse in the ear is very rare. We report a case of relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in the left ear. The patient presented with an aural polyp and ipsilateral facial palsy. The temporal bone showed simultaneous leukaemic infiltrate and cholesteatoma. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported with such pathology.

Acute type of adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL) has been recognized as highly-progressive T-cell malignancy with a median survival of 7 months. We present a case who had a spontaneous remission from acute type ATL with organ involvement and chromosomal abnormality implying very poor prognosis. Although the mechanism of spontaneous remission remains uncertain, our case was unique with regard to the progression and regression of leukaemia.

The authors report one case of granulocytic sarcoma infiltrating the larynx and cervical lymph nodes in a 50-year-old smoking patient. At the time of diagnosis there was no clinical and laboratory evidence of acute myeloid leukemia or chronic myeloproliferative disease. Four months after diagnosis, bone marrow morphology was consistent with chronic myeloid leukemia, accelerated phase. Cytogenetic abnormalities (Ph 1 chromosome, t(1; 12) (p36; p13), and trisomy of chromosome 20) were also found in hemopoetic cells. Granulocytic sarcoma preceding installation of chronic myeloid leukemia, as desc

Cells obtained from malignant lymph nodes and the peripheral blood of 106 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas were examined for T- and B-cell characteristics. Surprisingly, 79 cases were of the T-cell type on the basis of spontaneous rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes (E-rosettes). Of the remaining cases, 15 were B-cell in nature (monoclonal S-Ig positive), seven were non T-, non B-cell and four cases were undetermined. Forty-nine (62.0%) of the T-cell malignancies were of a leukemic variety, characterized by pleomorphism in the peripheral blood cell size, and histological appearance.

Leukemia cutis describes the infiltration and dissemination of neoplastic leukemic cells into the epidermis, dermis, or subcutis, resulting in clinically identifiable cutaneous lesions. Depending on the type of leukemia, a wide range of clinical and histopathological findings may be encountered. This report describes a patient with a rosacea-like eruption as a unique clinical presentation of T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia.

We present 3 cases of diffuse infiltration of the testes and epididymides by malignant lymphoma and leukemia. Gray-scale and color Doppler sonograms showed diffuse hypoechoic enlargement and hypervascularity of the involved testes and epididymides. The authors emphasize that enlargement and hypervascularity of both the epididymis and testis can be caused by lymphomatous/leukemic involvement and is not always indicative of epididymo-orchitis.

Transthyretin and albumin in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and in serum were repeatedly assessed in 40 patients with acute leukemias or high grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The patients were divided into 3 groups. Group I-5 individuals with clinical manifestations of leukemic or lymphomatous meningosis; Group II-33 cases with no clinical data of central nervous system involvement by neoplasm (leukemia/lymphoma); Group III-2 patients in whom extramedullary solid leukemic or lymphomatous infiltrations were diagnosed. It was revealed that blood-brain-barrier dysfunction due to neoplastic infilt

Intensive leukopheresis has been valuable in the short-term palliation of chronic lymphocytic and granulocytic leukemias. A 47-yr-old man with refractory leukemic reticuloendotheliosis (hairy cell leukemia) manifested by anemia, thrombocytopenia, elevated peripheral leukemia cell counts, generalized lymph node enlargement, and leukemic infiltrative skin disease was treated with serial leukopheresis. Removal of approximately 7 X 10(11) peripheral leukemia cells resulted in marked clinical and hematologic improvement with resolution of enlarged lymph nodes and clearing of skin infiltrates. At th
