Actinic lichen nitidus.

Actinic lichen nitidus is a unique photoinduced lichenoid eruption that displays histologic features of classic lichen nitidus, with some clinical similarity. It is seen most commonly in deeply pigmented patients (Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI), in photodistributed areas, and during the summer months. Sun avoidance and topical corticosteroids are the mainstay of therapy; however, seasonal recurrences are common. Actinic lichen nitidus has unique properties that differentiate it from classic lichen nitidus. Confusion exists in the literature regarding the nomenclature of this entity, and it a

Zosteriform lichen planus.

A 95-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of a pruritic eruption involving her trunk, medial thighs, and lesions limited to the C5 dermatome of the left upper extremity. Punch biopsy supported a clinical diagnosis of zosteriform lichen planus. Linear lichen planus refers to lichen planus with a unilateral linear distribution. This variant may present as an example of the Wolf isotopic response, or more rarely, a de novo eruption on previously-normal skin. In very rare instances linear lichen planus presents in a segmental fashion corresponding to a dermatome and is termed zosterifor

Lichen sclerosus of the lip.

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disorder predominately affecting prepubertal girls and postmenopausal women. Isolated lichen sclerosus affecting the oral mucosa is exceedingly rare. Only 13 patients with biopsy-proved isolated oral disease have been reported in the literature. We report a 10-year-old Caucasian girl with a well-demarcated 1.5 cm x 1.2 cm atrophic white plaque with a violaceous border and focal telangiectases on the right inferior vermillion lip, extending on to the labial mucosa. No other cutaneous surfaces, including genitalia, were involved. Incisiona

[Genital lichen sclerosus].

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease which origin remains unknown. Its prevalence ranges from one in 300 to one in 1000 of all patients referred to a dermatology clinic in the seventeenth. Through the analysis of a hospital survey, we outline the epidemio-clinical aspects of this dermatosis. Over a 19-year period (1984-2002), we have conducted a retrospective and monocentric study of all patients with genital lichen sclerosus were examined at the dermatology department of Habib Thameur hospital. Thirty-four patients suffered from lichen sclerosus. There were 33 fema

Generalized lichen nitidus.

Lichen nitidus is a rare chronic condition of unknown etiology. Generalized lichen nitidus is even rarer. We report here a 5-year-old girl who had multiple, asymptomatic, discrete, 1 to 2 mm flesh-colored, shiny, flat, papules on her face, upper limbs, and thighs with relative sparing of the trunk. Resolution of these papular lesions was followed by hyperpigmented macules in those areas. Histopathologic examination of a papular lesion revealed a localized granulomatous lymphohistiocytic infiltrate in an expanded dermal papilla with thinning of overlying epidermis and downward extension of the

Condyloma with lichen nitidus.

A 32-year-old black man presented with two separate eruptions on his penis (Figure). He has had a 10-year history of asymptomatic 1-3 mm shiny papules on the shaft of his penis. He also has had one asymptomatic verrucous brown plaque 1.5 cm in diameter on his penis. A small shave biopsy was performed for each process. The former showed lymphocytes and histocytes in the papillary dermis in a "ball-in-claw" relation to the rete ridges of the epidermis. The latter showed an acanthotic epidermis with papillomatosis. Diagnoses of lichen nitidus and condyloma acuminata were respectively made. As the

Lichen planus actinicus.

Lichen planus actinicus is a photodistributed variant of lichen planus that most often occurs in individuals with dark complexions. Sunlight seems to be a triggering factor in most cases. Several clinical morphologic patterns have been described, and multiple therapies with variable results have been used. The lesions in some patients may remit spontaneously with sun avoidance.

Lichen sclerosus. A review.

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can cause substantial physical and psychological morbidity. It most commonly affects women in the anogenital region, but may affect any area of skin in either sex at any age. Not only does it cause itching and soreness, but also urinary and sexual problems. There is an increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma in the genital area in both female and male sufferers, thus long term follow-up may be justified. The aetiology of Lichen sclerosus is unknown but genetic factors play a role, and chronic infection had been postula

Generalized lichen nitidus.

We report a 38-year-old man who presented with a generalized papular eruption that was clinically and histologically consistent with lichen nitidus. This patient's condition had been persistent for approximately 1 year; however, soon after assuming employment that entailed significant, regular sun exposure, the patient noted marked clearing of his lesions in sun-exposed areas. This case corroborates previous reports that suggest that generalized lichen nitidus can be successfully managed with ultraviolet light therapy.

Actinic lichen nitidus.

Many clinical variants of lichen nitidus (LN) have been reported. We describe two children with distribution of LN lesions on sun exposed areas with typical histological features of LN. We propose to add actinic LN as another clinical variant.

Oesophageal lichen planus.

We present a case of lichen planus affecting the oesophagus of an 80-year-old woman. Symptomatically, the lesions manifested themselves as dysphagia requiring repeated oesophageal dilatations. The patient was unable to tolerate several conventional treatments and so pulsed methylprednisolone was given with some beneficial short-term effects. Due to potential for malignant change in lichen planus of the mucous membranes it is important to remember this complication and investigate patients with oesophageal symptoms.
