Distribution of lymphatic tissues and autonomic nerves in supporting ligaments around the cervix uteri.

To investigate the distribution of lymphatic tissues and nerves in the supporting ligaments around the cervix uteri for their tomographical relationship, 9 adult female cadavers were used in this study. Following the incision of all supporting ligaments around the cervix, hematoxylin and esosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical staining of various sections of these ligaments was performed to enable the distribution of lymph tissues and autonomic nerves to be observed. Four lymph nodes were identified in three cadaver specimens. Three lymph nodes were present at a distance of 2.0 cm from the cervix…

Simultaneous anatomic reconstruction of the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments using a single tendon graft.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to introduce a novel surgical technique for simultaneous anatomic reconstruction of the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments using a single tendon graft and to compare its biomechanical characteristics to those of a coracoid cerclage reconstruction of the coracoclavicular ligaments. METHODS: Six matched pairs of human acromioclavicular joints with an average age of 54.8 ± 7.8 years were used. One shoulder from each pair received the single tendon acromioclavicular-coracoclavicular reconstruction; the contralateral shoulder received the coraco…

Glenoid avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments as a cause of recurrent anterior shoulder instability.

Although the Bankart lesion is accepted as the primary pathology responsible for recurrent shoulder instability, recognition of other soft-tissue lesions has improved the surgical treatment for this common problem. Whereas humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments has been acknowledged as a cause of anterior shoulder instability, we have not found any reported cases of glenoid avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments. We describe 3 cases of recurrent anterior shoulder instability due to glenoid avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments. The avulsed ligaments were repaired to the labrum and gle…

Role of biomechanics in the understanding of normal, injured, and healing ligaments and tendons.

Ligaments and tendons are soft connective tissues which serve essential roles for biomechanical function of the musculoskeletal system by stabilizing and guiding the motion of diarthrodial joints. Nevertheless, these tissues are frequently injured due to repetition and overuse as well as quick cutting motions that involve acceleration and deceleration. These injuries often upset this balance between mobility and stability of the joint which causes damage to other soft tissues manifested as pain and other morbidity, such as osteoarthritis. The healing of ligament and tendon injuries varies from …

Knee and ankle ligaments: magnetic resonance imaging findings of normal anatomy and at injury.

Ligamentous injuries of the lower limb are a common entity sustained during sports activities and military training. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the knee and ankle is playing an increasingly important role in the detection, diagnosis and prognosis of these injuries and their associated complications. MR imaging with its exquisite soft tissue contrast resolution and multiplanar capability is increasingly seen as the modality of choice for evaluating ligamentous injuries of the knee and ankle. Representative knee and ankle MR studies from a tertiary referral hospital are used to illustrat

CAMM techniques for the prediction of the mechanical properties of tendons and ligaments nanostructures.

Theoretical prediction of the mechanical properties of soft tissues usually relies on a top-down approach; that is analysis is gradually ref … , simulate molecular interactions, and understand them in quantitative energetic terms. Tendons and ligaments can be considered an ideal arena due to their well defined and highly organized architecture which involves not only the main structural constituent, the collagen molecule, but also other important molecular "actors" such as proteoglycans and glycos …

Effect of changes in cruciate ligaments pretensions on knee joint laxity and ligament forces.

The knee joint cruciate ligaments are reconstructed with the rationale to avoid joint instability, recurrent injury, damage to soft tissues and osteoarthritis. Wide range of procedures with different stiffness, pretension, orientation and insertion locations have been proposed with the primary goal to restore the joint laxity. Apart from the general lack of success in preservation of force in the reconstructed ligament itself, the concern, not yet addressed, arises as to the effect of such perturbation on the other intact cruciate ligament. The interaction between cruciate ligament forces is h…

Correction of uterine prolapse by the vaginal route using the uterosacral ligaments: Shirodkar procedure.

OBJECTIVE: To study long-term results of Shirodkar procedure for treatment of uterine prolapse in women wishing to retain their uterus. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty-one patients with a symptomatic uterine prolapse who desire to preserve their uterus without further childbearing were treated between 1988 and 2000. By the vaginal route, uterosacral ligaments were separated from the uterus, shortened, transposed in front of the uterine isthmus, and fixed bilaterally under the opposite lateral surface of the cervix or of the cervical stump after amputation. RESULTS: Median age of patients was 37 years. M…

Occurrence of bilateral sacroiliitis and ossification of anterior spinal ligaments in the same patient.

Abstract Enthesopathy and ligament calcification may occur in both the degenerative and inflammatory types of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and ankylosing spondylitis. Despite their fairly frequent occurence in rheumatic disease care settings, few reports of their presence in the same patient have appeared in the literature. In this report, we present the case of a male patient with chronic low back pain, who had both ossification of anterior spinal ligaments and bilateral sacroiliac joint ankylosis, and discuss the known pathogenesis of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis.

Anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ligaments of the ankle using a plantaris tendon graft.

The purpose of this work was to present our technique of anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligaments using a free plantaris tendon graft. Between 1988 and 1997, 52 ankles (48 patients) were treated for chronic ankle instability resisting to a training program of minimally 3 months. The average age was 28.6 years (16 to 46 years) at the time of surgery. There were 30 ankles in men and 22 ankles in females. 4 patients were treated on both ankles. 50 ankles were available for a follow-up investigation after a mean of 3.5 years (1 to 10 years). Based on the AOFAS-Hindfoot-Scale an avera…

Long-term functional outcome after primary repair of the lateral ligaments of the ankle.

We retrospectively reexamined a total of 100 patients 6 to 8 years after primary repair of ruptured lateral ligaments of the ankle. Fifty-nine percent of the injuries had occurred in sports; the other main causes of the injuries were accidents at work (12%), in traffic (10%), and at home (4%). Almost two-thirds of the sports injuries were sustained in volleyball. The most common type of injury was a combined rupture of the anterior talofibular and the calcaneofibular ligaments (66 patients). According to subjective assessment, 74 patients had excellent or good results. For the anterior drawer …

Functional evaluation of the ligaments at the acromioclavicular joint during anteroposterior and superoinferior translation.

We examined the anatomy and measured the in situ force in ligaments at the acromioclavicular joint using a universal force-moment sensor. The in situ force in the coracoacromial, conoid, trapezoid, superior acromioclavicular capsular, and inferior acromioclavicular capsular ligaments of 10 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders was determined for a load of 70 N applied to the clavicle in anteroposterior and superoinferior directions. The lengths of the conoid and trapezoid ligaments were found to be 15.1 +/- 4.1 and 11.5 +/- 2.2 mm, respectively; the widths of the conoid and trapezoid ligaments were…

[Anatomical characteristics of hepatogastric and gastrocolic ligaments and possibilities of their restoration after surgery].

The information concerning the shape and sizes of the hepatogastric and gastrocolic ligaments which is necessary for choice of a method for their restoration after performance of the operation on the stomach is presented. In the experiment on dogs, the methods for restoration of the mentioned ligaments have been developed. After restoration of the ligaments, rapid vascularization of a scar between them and gastric walls was revealed. After restoration of the hepatogastric and gastrocolic ligaments, the favourable immediate and long-term results were noted in 15 patients.

Coincident rupture of the scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligaments without perilunate dislocation: pathomechanics and management.

Wrist injuries causing coincident disruptions of the scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligaments commonly result in perilunate dislocations. This article (1) describes our management of eight patients with wrist pain after coincident scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligament disruptions in the absence of perilunate dislocation; and (2) reports the results of biomechanical testing of some of the extrinsic and intrinsic wrist ligament and interprets these data to explain the injury seen clinically. The diagnosis of ligament failure was made on the basis of history, physical examination, arthrograph…

[Injury of the collateral ligaments of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb and therapy].

The authors report on their experience on 176 patients with lesions of the ulnar collateral ligaments. Two samples were compared: the fresh rupture and immediate suture, and the old lesion treated by a special plasty with palmaris tendon (Bäuerle/Reill). The long term results (at least 2 years) of both collectives were nearly identical. The authors recommend immediate repair.

Isolated fracture-avulsions of the tibial insertions of the cruciate ligaments of the knee.

This paper discusses the treatment of isolated fracture-avulsions of the tibial insertions of the cruciate ligaments of the knee. The indications for conservative treatment or open reduction and osteosynthesis, are based on a classification by Meyer and McKeever which takes into account the displacement of the avulsed fragment. This is the crucial factor in the choice of treatment.
