Exercise-induced gut microbiota metabolites and the gut-lung axis: implications for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasingly recognised as a systemic disorder associated with gut dysbiosis and impaired gutlung communication. COPD-associated gut dysbiosis suggests potential bidirectional interactions between the gut and lung, which may be mediated by circulating immune cells, gut microbiota-derived metabolites and systemic inflammatory mediators. Emerging evidence suggests that exercise may improve COPD-related symptoms and quality of life not only through direct cardiopulmonary adaptations but also by reshaping gut microbiota composition and metabolic func

From the gut to the lungs: The role of gut microbiota in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and related research progress.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory disease with high morbidity and mortality. Existing treatment methods are difficult to effectively curb disease progression, highlighting the urgency to explore new pathogenesis mechanisms and therapeutic targets. With the development of microbiomics, the proposal of the "gut-lung axis" concept has provided a brand-new perspective for understanding the pathological mechanisms of COPD, revealing that the gut and lungs maintain a close connection through pathways such as immune regulation and metabolic interaction. This ar

Prevalence of blood eosinophilia and its impact on lung functions in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is marked by persistent airflow limitation. Blood eosinophilia has emerged as a potential biomarker for predicting the risk of exacerbations as well as response to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). However, its impact on lung function in stable COPD remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of blood eosinophilia in stable COPD patients and explore its relationship with lung function, exercise capacity and exacerbation history. METHODS: A total of 60 stable COPD patients were included in this cross-sectional

Evaluating the effect of immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in lung cancer patients.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are first line treatment for advanced lung cancer. Tobacco use is a shared risk factor for lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although many patients with COPD and lung cancer receive ICIs, the impact of ICIs on COPD is unknown. Here, we evaluated whether ICI treatment was associated with increased COPD disease burden. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of lung cancer patients with and without preexisting COPD who received ICIs from 2011-2021 at The Ohio State University (OSU). For all patients, number of steroid courses and

Oral infection with periodontal pathogens induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-like lung changes in mice.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that periodontitis is an independent risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the mechanism underlying the association between these two diseases remains unclear. The lung microbiota shares similarities with the oral microbiota, and there is growing evidence to suggest that the lung microbiome could play a role in the pathogenesis of COPD. This study aimed to investigate whether periodontal pathogens could contribute to the pathogenesis of COPD in a mouse model. METHODS: We established mouse models with oral i

Lower Airway Dysbiosis Augments Lung Inflammatory Injury in Mild-to-Moderate Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Rationale: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with high morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Cigarette smoke is a causative factor; however, not all heavy smokers develop COPD. Microbial colonization and infections are contributing factors to disease progression in advanced stages. Objectives: We investigated whether lower airway dysbiosis occurs in mild-to-moderate COPD and analyzed possible mechanistic contributions to COPD pathogenesis. Methods: We recruited 57 patients with a >10 pack-year smoking history: 26 had physiological evidence of COPD, and 31 had nor

Chronic Bronchial Infection Is Associated with More Rapid Lung Function Decline in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Rationale: Some patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) suffer accelerated lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1]) decline over time. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between chronic bronchial infection (CBI) and, in particular, the isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), and FEV1 decline in COPD. Methods: Post-hoc analysis of a prospective cohort of 201 patients with COPD followed up every 3-6 months for 84 months. CBI was defined as ⩾3 sputum positive cultures of the same pathogenic micro-organism (PPM) over 1 year. Patients were stratified

Propionibacterium acnes: an uncommon cause of lung abscess in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated with bullous emphysema.

A 57-year-old man who had recurrent respiratory infections due to tobacco use and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was evaluated as an outpatient to discern the etiology. He was followed with a chest X-ray and a chest computed tomography (CT) scan that displayed a left upper lobe cavitary lung abnormality. The lesion was further evaluated with a CT-guided biopsy, and it was identified as a lung abscess. A tissue culture isolated Propionibacterium acnes. We present a rare case of a common skin commensal, P. acnes, that infected the left upper lobe of the lung. We presume that

Evaluation of Serum Resistin, Visfatin, and Chemerin Levels in Patients with Lung Cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Cachexia is an important problem in lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some studies report an association between adipokines and cachexia. Our study aimed to investigate the association of three novel adipokines, resistin, visfatin, and chemerin, with lung cancer and COPD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 30 patients with non-smallcell lung cancer, 30 patients with COPD, and 30 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Statistically significant weight loss was found in COPD and lung cancer groups compared with that in the control group (p<0.001). Among the bi

Genetic loci associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap with loci for lung function and pulmonary fibrosis.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. We performed a genetic association study in 15,256 cases and 47,936 controls, with replication of select top results (P < 5 × 10-6) in 9,498 cases and 9,748 controls. In the combined meta-analysis, we identified 22 loci associated at genome-wide significance, including 13 new associations with COPD. Nine of these 13 loci have been associated with lung function in general population samples, while 4 (EEFSEC, DSP, MTCL1, and SFTPD) are new. We noted two loci shared with pulmonary fibrosis (FAM13A and DSP) but

Repeated Activation of Lung Invariant NKT Cells Results in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-Like Symptoms.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic airway inflammation, mucus hypersecretion, and emphysema, which lead to reduced lung function and breathlessness. The pathologies of COPD are due to an abnormal immune response. Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are an important population of innate lymphocytes and have been implicated in the regulation of immune responses associated with a broad range of diseases including COPD. We have here analyzed the role of iNKT cells in a model of COPD induced by repeated intranasal administration of iNKT cell agonist α-galac
