Role of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and susceptibility weighted imaging in cerebral alveolar echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the characteristic performance of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) in cerebral alveolar echinococcosis (CAE). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 10 clinical-identified CAE cases MR performance, and summarized the MRS and SWI performance of CAE. RESULTS: The 10 cases of CAE all had the history of primary HAE, among who 6 cases had single lesion (60%), while the rest 4 cases had multiple lesions (40%); and 4 cases were concomitant with lung metastases. MRI performance: T2WI lesions were coal-like low-signal shadow, with mu…

1H-proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy differentiates dementia with Lewy bodies from Alzheimer's disease.

FDG-PET and SPECT studies suggest that hypometabolism and hypoperfusion in occipital lobe and posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG) are prominent features of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), respectively. Cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism are tightly linked to brain energy metabolism. 1H-MRS is a useful tool to directly detect energy metabolism. We aimed to use 1H-MRS to characterize metabolite concentrations in the occipital lobe and PCG in DLB and AD patients, and estimate their usefulness in the diagnosis of DLB. Nineteen DLB, 21 AD, and 18 normal control (NC

A systematic review of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings in sport-related concussion.

Traditional structural neuroimaging techniques are normal in athletes who sustain sport-related concussions and are only considered to be cl … s, changes in glucose metabolism, altered cerebral blood flow, and impaired axonal function. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS, or simply MRS) is capable of measuring brain biochemistry and has the potential to identify and quantify physiologic changes after concussion. The focus of the current review is to provide an overview of research findings using MRS in spo …

Possibilities for improved early breast cancer detection by Padé-optimized magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

There are major dilemmas regarding the optimal modalities for breast cancer screening. This is of particular relevance to Israel because of its high-risk population. It was suggested that an avenue for further research would be to incorporate advances in signal processing through the fast Padé transform (FPT) to magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). We have now applied the FPT to time signals that were generated according to in vitro MRS data as encoded from extracted breast specimens from normal, non-infiltrated breast tissue, fibroadenoma and cancerous breast tissue. The FPT is shown to res…

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in patients with early stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting upper and lower motor neurons. Due to relative fast progression of the disease, early diagnosis is essential. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) is used for objectivization of upper motor neuron (UMN) lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the use of (1)H-MRS in the early stages of ALS. METHODS: Eleven patients with clinically definite (n=2), probable (n=7), and probable laboratory-supported (n=2) diagnosis of ALS with disease duration of less than 14 months w…

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy in adult-onset citrullinemia: elevated glutamine levels in comatose patients.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset type II citrullinemia is an inborn error of urea cycle metabolism that can lead to hyperammonemic encephalopathy and coma. However, type II citrullinemia is rare outside Japan, and diagnosis and treatment can be delayed. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy may be a useful adjunct to magnetic resonance imaging, and has been applied to noninvasively study chemical metabolism in the human brain. PATIENTS: We describe 2 patients with type II citrullinemia who presented with episodic postprandial somnolence and coma. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed bilatera…

Preliminary findings of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in occipital cortex during sleep deprivation.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) has revealed biochemical alterations in various psychiatric disorders. Changes in brain metabolites may be caused not only by the disease's progression or response to treatment, but also by physiological variability. The aim of this study was to use (1)H MRS to assess the effects of specific short-term physiological states on major metabolites. Eight healthy women underwent (1)H MRS at the beginning and end of a 40-h period of sleep deprivation. The ratios of N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), total creatine (tCr), and choline-containing compounds (Cho)…

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of metastatic brain tumors: variations of metabolic profile.

BACKGROUND: Spectroscopic imaging can be helpful for the noninvasive identification of parenchymal brain tumors. The objective of the present study was the characterization of the metabolic profile of intracranial metastases, based on proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). METHODS: One hundred and four metastatic brain tumors were evaluated by long-echo (TR, 2000 ms; TE, 136 ms) single-voxel volume-selected proton MRS. In 83 patients the tumor fraction within the MRS voxel constituted more than 50%. RESULTS: Compared to normal brain, the tumors showed statistically significant decreas…

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion-weighted imaging in isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency.

Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of the newborn that can be mistaken for neonatal asphyxia. Diffusion-weighted imaging of the brain demonstrates widespread diffusion restriction, and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy shows an elevated lactate level, a decrease in the ratio of N-acetylaspartate to creatine, and a rise in the ratio of choline to creatine. This precedes severe cystic encephalomalacia and suggests that the energy failure associated with neuronal dysfunction and myelin disintegration occurs early in isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency.

Inosiplex affects the spectra of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

In vivo magnetic resonance techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy have been some of the most useful tools for evaluation of neurologic diseases. In subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be an additional tool for evaluation of disease progression or the efficacy of the treatment, such as interferon or inosiplex, compared with MRI. Inosiplex is one of the effective drugs for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, but our in vivo and in vitro magnetic resonance spectroscopic study indicated that inosiplex affects th…

Rubidium-87 magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging for analysis of mammalian K+ transport.

This review summarizes results 87Rb MRS/I studies of K+ transport in mammalian cells, organs and in vivo. It provides a brief description of K+ transport systems, their interactions with Rb+ and evidence that Rb+ is a best K+ congener. 87Rb MR studies have focused mostly on isolated perfused rat and pig hearts and to a lesser extent on kidney, skeletal muscle, salivary gland and red blood cells. The method has been used for three purposes: measurements of kinetics of unidirectional Rb+ uptake and efflux and steady-state Rb+ levels. In cardiovascular studies Rb+ has been used in the absence of

Posterior cingulate metabolic changes in frontotemporal lobar degeneration detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Differences in prognosis and symptomatic treatment have highlighted the importance of the differential diagnosis of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and other dementias, but the variable clinical features make diagnosis difficult. We studied metabolic changes using multivoxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in regions of FTLD, including the posterior cingulate gyrus, which is also the area most affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the early stages. We examined six patients with FTLD, six with presumed AD, and five healthy volunteers using repetition and echo times of 20…

Cognitive deficits and magnetic resonance spectroscopy in adult monozygotic twins with lead poisoning.

Seventy-one-year-old identical twin brothers with chronic lead poisoning were identified from an occupational medicine clinic roster. Both were retired painters, but one brother (J.G.) primarily removed paint and had a history of higher chronic lead exposure. Patella and tibia bone lead concentrations measured by K-X-ray fluorescence in each brother were 5-10 times those of the general population and about 2.5 times higher in J.G. than in his brother (E.G.). Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies examined N-acetylaspartate:creatine ratios, a marker of neuronal density. Ratios were lower…

Serial proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain in children undergoing cardiac surgery.

We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study 11 children (age < 8 years) with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass to determine whether low (10 +/- 4; n = 6) vs high (20 +/- 4; n = 5) perfusate hematocrits during bypass resulted in changes in brain metabolites which correlate with neurologic injury. Long and short echo time single voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy in occipital gray matter and neurologic assessment were performed preoperatively and 2 and 5 days postoperatively. We also determined whether prolonged periods at low flow rates during bypass affe…

Quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of cerebral metabolic disturbances in patients with MELAS.

Four patients with clinically and genetically defined MELAS were examined using quantitative localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain. Acute and chronic lesions were located in the occipital lobe and mostly characterized by strongly elevated concentrations of lactate (Lac) and glucose (GIc) as well as severely reduced concentrations of total N-acetylaspartyl compounds (tNAA, neuroaxonal markers), glutamate (Glu), and total creatine. These findings indicate a high degree of nonoxidative glycolysis reflecting either impaired oxidative energy metabolism or the use of anaerobi…

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in an Italian family with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1.

Linkage and DNA analysis, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and single-voxel proton MR spectroscopy were obtained in 10 members of an Italian kindred with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1). The size of the basis pontis, cerebellar hemispheres, middle cerebellar peduncles, and medulla oblongata were decreased in 4 members carrying the SCA1 gene, compared with 6 unaffected subjects. Diffuse signal changes in the pons and cerebellum were observed only in the carrier with the longest disease duration and greatest disability. The N-acetylaspartate/creatine ratio and the choline/creatine ratio in

Mouse muscle regeneration: an in vivo 2D 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) study.

Muscle degeneration and regeneration were studied by 2D 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and histological examination, in an experimental model of muscle injury using a myotoxic snake venom, notexin. The injured muscles produced a very specific MRS signal, corresponding to a tri-unsaturated fatty acid (linolenic acid-like) signal, from day 2 to day 9 after injury. The combination of MRS with histology showed that this signal was associated with a mechanism occurring during myoblast fusion to form myotubes. 2D 1H MRS is thus a useful non-invasive tool for detecting muscle regeneration i…
