Post-stroke upper limb recovery is correlated with dynamic resting-state network connectivity.

Motor recovery is still limited for people with stroke especially those with greater functional impairments. In order to improve outcome, we … ally evaluated at 3 weeks (early subacute) and 12 weeks (late subacute) after stroke. Resting-state magnetoencephalography and clinical scores of motor function were recorded and compared with matched controls. Magnetoencephalography data were decomposed using a data-driven hidden Markov model into 10 time-varying resting-state networks. People with stroke showed statis …

Signatures of somatosensory cortical dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in the general population, while HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder is the most … he neuropathology underlying cognitive decline in each condition. In the current study, we utilized magnetoencephalography, extensive neuropsychological testing and a paired-pulse somatosensory gating paradigm to probe differences in somatosensory processing in participants from two ongoing magnetoencephalography studies. The resulting participant groups included 27 cog …

Rapidly induced changes in neuromagnetic fields following repetitive hand movements.

Sensory feedback plays a major role in movement execution and motor learning, particularly in motor rehabilitation. Whilst elaborating therapeutic strategies, it is of interest to visualize the effect of a therapeutic intervention at the moment of its application. We analyzed the effect of repeated execution of a simple extension and flexion movement of the wrist on the sensorimotor cortex of seven healthy subjects using magnetoencephalography. Spatial filtering based on current dipoles was used to quantify the strength of cortical activation. Our results showed an increase of cortical activat…

Pilomotor seizures marked by infraslow activity and acetazolamide responsiveness.

A patient with pilomotor seizures post anti-LGI1 limbic encephalitis, refractory to immunotherapy and anti-epileptic drugs, was investigated with electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography. Seizures occurred daily (14.9 ± 4.9/day), with catamenial exacerbation, inducible by hyperventilation. Anterior temporal ictal onsets were heralded (by ~15 sec) by high amplitude ipsilateral electromagnetic infraslow activity. The catamenial/ventilatory sensitivity and the infraslow activity (reflecting glial depolarization) suggested an ionic, CO 2/pH-related glioneuronal mechanism. Furosemide decre…

Tactile stimulation accelerates behavioral responses to visual stimuli through enhancement of occipital gamma-band activity.

We investigated how responses of occipital cortex to visual stimuli are modulated by simultaneously presented tactile stimuli. Magnetoencephalography was recorded while subjects performed a simple reaction time task. Presence of a task-irrelevant tactile stimulus leads to faster behavioral responses and earlier and stronger gamma-band synchronization in occipital cortex, irrespective of the relative location of the tactile stimulus. While also other stimulus related responses in occipital cortex were modulated (alpha-band and evoked responses in parieto-occipital region), correlation-analysis …

Abnormal gamma and beta MEG activity during finger movements in early-onset psychosis.

Patients with psychosis often exhibit abnormalities in basic motor control, but little is known about the neural basis of these deficits. This study examines the neuro-dynamics of movement using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in adolescents with early-onset psychosis and typically developing controls. MEG data were imaged using beamforming then evaluated for task and group effects before, during, and after movement onsets. Primary findings included weaker activation in patients during movement execution in cerebellar cortices. Such aberrations likely contribute to the decreased motor control exh…

Neural mechanisms underlying action observation in adults with Down syndrome.

Results of a magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain imaging study conducted to examine the cortical responses during action execution and action observation in 10 healthy adults and 8 age-matched adults with Down syndrome are reported. During execution, the motor responses were strongly lateralized on the ipsilateral rather than the contralateral side in the Down syndrome group. Observation of movement activated a network of cortical regions that was similar to the control group; however, there was no significant peak activity in the motor areas. In addition, the overall pattern of neural activati…

Challenges in replay detection by TDLM in post-encoding resting state.

Using temporally delayed linear modeling (TDLM) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated whether items associated with an underlying graph structure are replayed during a post-learning resting state. In these same data, we previously provided evidence for replay during online (non-rest) memory retrieval. Despite successful decoding of brain activity during a localizer task, and contrary to predictions, we found no evidence for replay during a post-learning resting state. To better understand this, we performed a hybrid simulation analysis in which we inserted synthetic replay events i…

Altered binaural hearing in pre-ataxic and ataxic mutation carriers of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

Brainstem degeneration is a prominent feature of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), involving structures that execute binaural synchroniz … ntrols. Moreover, the cortical N100 response following Huggins pitch onset was acquired by means of magnetoencephalography (MEG). MEG recordings were analyzed using dipole source modeling and comprised a monaural pitch condition and a no-pitch condition with simple binaural correlation changes. Increased top-down semantic processing in natural speech linked to better reading in dyslexia.

Early research proposed that individuals with developmental dyslexia use contextual information to facilitate lexical access and compensate for phonological deficits. Yet at present there is no corroborating neuro-cognitive evidence. We explored this with a novel combination of magnetoencephalography (MEG), neural encoding and grey matter volume analyses. We analysed MEG data from 41 adult native Spanish speakers (14 with dyslexic symptoms) who passively listened to naturalistic sentences. We used multivariate Temporal Response Function analysis to capture online cortical tracking of both audi…

Fading of brain network fingerprint in Parkinson's disease predicts motor clinical impairment.

The clinical connectome fingerprint (CCF) was recently introduced as a way to assess brain dynamics. It is an approach able to recognize ind … ls, and that such reduction could be used to predict motor impairment. We used source-reconstructed magnetoencephalography signals to build two functional connectomes for 47 patients with PD and 47 healthy controls. Then, exploiting the two connectomes per individual, we investigated the identifiability characteristics of each subject in each group. We observed reduced …

Differential impact of movement on the alpha and gamma dynamics serving visual processing.

Visual processing is widely understood to be served by a decrease in alpha activity in occipital cortices, largely concurrent with an increase in gamma activity. Although the characteristics of these oscillations are well documented in response to a range of complex visual stimuli, little is known about how these dynamics are impacted by concurrent motor responses, which is problematic as many common visual tasks involve such responses. Thus, in the current study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and modified a well-established visual paradigm to explore the impact of motor responses on vi…

The role of reading experience in atypical cortical tracking of speech and speech-in-noise in dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a frequent developmental disorder in which reading acquisition is delayed and that is usually associated with difficulties under … evel matched controls. All were native French speakers. Neural entrainment to speech and nonspeech in dyslexia: Conceptual replication and extension of previous investigations.

Whether phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia are associated with impaired neural sampling of auditory information is still under debate. Previous findings suggested that dyslexic participants showed atypical neural entrainment to slow and/or fast temporal modulations in speech, which might affect prosodic/syllabic and phonemic processing respectively. However, the large methodological variations across these studies do not allow us to draw clear conclusions on the nature of the entrainment deficit in dyslexia. Using magnetoencephalography, we measured neural entrainment to nonspeech…

Detection and analysis of MEG signals in occipital region with double-channel OPM sensors.

BACKGROUND: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has high temporal and spatial resolution and good spatial accuracy in determining the locations of source activity among most non-invasive imaging. The recently developed technology of optically-pumped magnetometer (OPM) has sensitivity comparable to that of the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) used in commercial MEG system. NEW METHOD: Double-channel OPM-MEG system detects human photic blocking of alpha rhythm at the occipital region of skull in the magnetically shielded environment via a wearable whole-cortex 3D-printed helmet. Using optically pumped magnetometers to measure magnetoencephalographic signals in the human cerebellum.

KEY POINTS: The application of conventional cryogenic magnetoencephalography (MEG) to the study of cerebellar functions is highly limited because typical cryogenic sensor arrays are far away from the cerebellum and naturalistic movement is not allowed in the recording. A new generation of MEG using optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) that can be worn on the head during movement has opened up an opportunity to image the cerebellar electrophysiological activity non-invasively. We use OPMs to record human cerebellar MEG signals elicited by air-puff stimulation to the eye. We demonstrate robust …
