Association of maternal age with child health: A Japanese longitudinal study.

Average maternal age at birth has been rising steadily in Western and some Asian countries. Older maternal age has been associated with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes; however, studies on the relationship between maternal age and young children's health remain scarce. Therefore, we sought to investigate the association of maternal age with child health outcomes in the Japanese population. We analyzed data from two birth cohorts of the nationwide Japanese Longitudinal Survey of Babies in 21st Century (n2001 = 47,715 and n2010 = 38,554). We estimated risks of unintentional injuries and hos

Optimizing Weight for Maternal and Infant Health - Tenable, or Too Late?

Obesity in pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity, and gestational weight gain (GWG) is one modifiable risk factor that improves pregnancy outcomes. Most pregnant women gain more than the 2009 Institute of Medicine recommendations, particularly overweight and obese women. GWG even less than the 2009 IOM guidelines in obese women may improve pregnancy outcomes and reduce large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants, an independent risk factor for childhood obesity, without increasing small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. Unfortunately, despite the fact that over 50 interve

Pre-eclampsia has an adverse impact on maternal and fetal health.

Pre-eclampsia (preE) is a multifaceted complication found uniquely in the pregnant patient and one that has puzzled scientists for years. Pr … This review defines the predisposition and causes of preE and the cellular signaling detrimental to maternal health during preE. Moreover, the risk factors for diseases that are transmitted to the offspring have been addressed in this review. The detrimental signaling molecules that have been overexpressed in preE patients raises the possibility that those signal …

Eye of the beholder? Maternal mental health and the quality of infant sleep.

Transactional models of parenting and infant sleep call attention to bidirectional associations among parenting, the biosocial environment, and infant sleep behaviors. Although night waking and bedtime fussing are normative during infancy and early childhood, they can be challenging for parents. The current study, conducted in the United States between 2003 and 2009, examined concurrent and longitudinal associations between maternal mental health and infant sleep during the first year. Concurrent associations at 6 and 12 months and longitudinal associations from 6 to 12 months were studied in

Biological mechanisms for nutritional regulation of maternal health and fetal development.

This review paper highlights mechanisms for nutritional regulation of maternal health and fetal development. Malnutrition (nutrient deficiencies or obesity) in pregnant women adversely affects their health by causing or exacerbating a plethora of problems, such as anaemia, maternal haemorrhage, insulin resistance, and hypertensive disorders (e.g. pre-eclampsia/eclampsia). Maternal malnutrition during gestation also impairs embryonic and fetal growth and development, resulting in deleterious outcomes, including intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), low birthweight, preterm birth, and birth de…

Maternal mental disorders in pregnancy and the puerperium and risks to infant health.

Prenatal and postnatal period presents the highest prevalence of mental disorders in women's lives and depression is the most frequent one, affecting approximately one in every five mothers. The aggravating factor here is that during this period psychiatric symptoms affect not only women's health and well-being but may also interfere in the infant's intra and extra-uterine development. Although the causes of the relationship between maternal mental disorders and possible risks to a child's health and development remain unknown, it is suspected that these risks may be related to the use of psyc

The effect of factor V Leiden carriage on maternal and fetal health.

Factor V Leiden is a common genetic mutation that predisposes its carriers to venous thromboembolism. When combined with the hypercoagulable state that is characteristic of pregnancy, there is an increased risk of severe and recurrent pregnancy complications. Factor V Leiden is the most common cause of primary and recurrent venous thromboembolism in pregnancy. Factor V Leiden carriage has consistently been shown to increase the risk of early onset gestational hypertension and HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, Low Platelets) in pregnancy. Maternal carriage of factor V Leiden is

Maternal and child health in Saudi Arabia. Study design and methodology.

Saudi Maternal and Child Health Survey was designed to study the utilisation of maternal health services by ever-married women of child-bearing age, by measuring level of tetanus vaccination coverage; breastfeeding and weaning knowledge, attitude and practices; and by measuring the level of vaccination coverage with BCG, DPT, Poliomyelitis and measles vaccines among children 1-2 years old at the national level. The standard world health organization (WHO) cluster technique was employed. The kingdom was divided into five geographical areas. The sampling frame used was available at the Ministry …

Improved maternal and child health care access in a rural community.

Few studies have measured the extent to which expansion of health services for pregnant women and children in poor rural communities improves access to care and health status. This paper describes an underserved rural community in which health care initiatives increased access to comprehensive care. Over a three-year period, use of preventive services increased, whereas emergency room visits and hospitalizations at the community hospital decreased. Low birthweight, risk of congenital syphilis and childhood tuberculosis, and child mortality all decreased. Provision of comprehensive services was

[Effects of maternal age in the neonate health status: Chilean evidence].

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the pregnancy outcome and the growth and development of infants of adolescent and older mothers in a Latin American setting in which young mothers received aggressive prenatal care, and in which breast feeding behavior of all women was strongly encouraged and recorded. Our hypothesis was that the generally higher rates of low birth weight and neonatal complications among infants of Chilean adolescents would be eliminated by an aggressive protocol of prenatal care. METHODS: Data on prenatal care, gestation, birth and infant growth and developme

[Maternal and perinatal health status in the State of São Paulo, Brazil].

The assistance offered during pregnancy and labour as also to the newborn child, and its relationship to maternal and perinatal mortality in the State of S. Paulo in 1984, is analysed on the basis of official available data. With respect to prenatal care the number of visits per woman was considered to be "sufficient" though of doubtful quality. The proportion of cesarean sections was very high (46.2%). Maternal mortality was found to be 4.86 deaths per 10,000 live births, but despite its being high, this figure is certainly too low and the correct figure is probably twice as high. The princip

[Maternal age and psychological health of the child. Study of a population in consultation].

The data of all first born or only children seen at the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at a university hospital from 1978-84 were analyzed according to maternal age at birth of the patient. Mixed emotional and conduct disorder as well as hyperkinetic syndromes are overrepresented in the youngest maternal age group (less than or equal to 17 at delivery). The difference to other groups remains significant for the former diagnosis even after matching for age, sex, socioeconomic status and whether or not the natural parents lived together at the time of presentation. Maternal and Neonatal Mortality in Somalia: A Persistent Women's Health Crisis Requiring Primary Health Care and Community Health System Reform.

This policy-oriented commentary aims to interpret the drivers of maternal and neonatal mortality in Somalia through the Three Delays Model and the World Health Organization health-system building-block framework and to propose a Somalia-specific policy framework for strengthening the continuum of care. It draws on purposively selected peer-reviewed literature, national and international reports, and health-system evidence. Its distinctive contribution is to frame maternal and neonatal mortality as both a women's health and reproductive-health equity crisis and a priority for health-system refo

Arsenic Exposure During Pregnancy: Impacts to Maternal and Offspring Cardiovascular Health.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths, with rates continuing to rise. While older maternal age and preexisting conditions such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension contribute to this trend, they do not fully account for it, suggesting a critical role for environmental factors. A major environmental concern is inorganic arsenic (iAs), which contaminates the food and water supply of over 140 million people worldwide. Exposure to iAs has been linked to a number of chronic diseases including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and heart disease. During preg

Understanding preeclampsia from cutting edge knowledge-protecting maternal and fetal health.

Preeclampsia (PE) is conventionally been defined clinically by new-onset or aggravating hypertension during pregnancy >20 weeks associated with proteinuria or other organ damages. PE is a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality globally and expected to increase even more. Nevertheless, there are still much to be established regarding pathophysiology, prediction, prevention, and management of PE and thus, research concerning PE is being actively conducted. This mini-review discusses on latest knowledge on PE.
